- As powerhouse corporations dominate the global media landscape, one home-run TV station is bucking the trend and pulling in viewers nostalgic for another era. Haley Ott has more on the Talking Pictures family, whose network has grown to be the biggest independent channel in Britain.

One other thing that TPTV has highlighted is how many old shows have been lost because companies either wiped the tapes or the films have been lost. But you can see the great results as more old shows get an airing on British tv for the first time in decades. I’ve seen shows that I first saw as a teenager, so it’s great they’re getting publicity in the US.
We need this channel here in the United States!

this would be a great idea for a non profit, a kind of free over the air museum. I myself would jump at the chance to volunteer just to learn all I could about how the station is run.
A fantastic channel. The footage detective program on a Sunday evening is a program that we never miss. The programmes featured , are ones that you would have sat down and watched with your parents.
Great to see what the rest of the room looks like... and the plate of bickies!
It’s an absolutely brilliant tv channel, showing everything from B&W movies from the 1930s and 40s through to classic tv shows from the 1980s. Friday evening’s Cellar Club shows old cult movies and Hammer Horror, and Wednesday afternoons with Saddle Up they show old Westerns. It’s showed what’s possible with a small budget and it’s got fans of all ages across the UK.
Yhe showed Buster Keaton's Frozen North last week. I would love to see more silents on there.
The UK version of MeTV, good for them.
not exactly MeTV has been trying to push more modern shows from the 80s and 90s lately which hasn't been going over well.
My favorite type of station! I was born in 1961 and have always enjoyed the older b/w movies, shows and the great movies of the 50s and 60s and early 70s. I even what movies from the 30s and 40s. The best eras to be born into and alive. Oh if only I could go back in time.

In the 1980's, Nick at Night (Nickelodeon) used to show 1950's and 60's TV shows such as Mr. Ed, the Patty Duke Show, Dobie Gillis, the Donna Reed Show, etc. These days, perhaps MeTV has taken over that nostalgia market. For those of us who prefer a retro or a vintage look at life, those TV shows are a bit more meaningful than some of the more modern-day TV offerings. It's understandable then why this retro TV station has become a success in the United Kingdom, as well.
The dominant media is a vast wasteland of mediocre and empty of meaningful programs.🤬
MeTV is kinda comforting to watch. Unfortunately, we don't always get the signal.
I like MeTV and some of the other retro channels popping up. They're fun to watch again and actually a nice break from some things on now. I'm glad the UK is getting to enjoy this too.

Antenna TV was good. Our area stopped getting it this month. It was such a good station. MeTv is good too but once we found Antenna TV we liked it even more.
Best channel bar none. I'm a massive fan of Noel and Sarah.
I've seen stuff from the past that I had forgotten about and loved just as much the second time around.

I live in the UK. Talking Pictures TV play a triple bill of vintage horror films every Friday night. It's wonderful.
Love seeing talking pictures get some recognition check out their encore

In January Antenna Tv was dropped from our stations our area gets with an antenna. It was a fantastic station. My whole family loved it. It was the only channel we watched regularly.

I'm in the UK and this is the best channel going. I'm 60 and being able to watch kids shows from my childhood is just wonderful, I can't wait for the Batman movie with Adam West and Burt Ward, that will be broadcast next month. There are a few more retro channels popping up, but TPTV is the best. But, best of all, it's pure entertainment with no messages.
Footage Detectives is my Sunday evening must see with Noel and Mike Read, plus Bob the projectionist.
Batman movie was yesterday (Saturday 27th). Never seen it shown before in the UK, not in my memory anyway. Another big coup for TPTV 👍
I watched it for the first time as an adult and laughed all the way through it. It was great.

I’m a little younger than they are, watching films from another era is virtual time travel for two hours.
One word for TPTV BRILLIANT stands way out above the rest.
50s/60s/70s They relied on acting and plot because the budget was low and CGI graphics hadn't been invented. More like plays really with no special effects to hide behind.
Stage acting is also full of big gestures & voice swings & over-expressive emoting, so that the people in the back row can tell how the character feels.
You can see it in the small-screen performances of a lot of classically trained actors.
Put on TV, such amped-up portrayals are now helpful for people who can't see/hear so well
This is a lovely piece and the tribute to TPTV is well deserved. Perhaps someone will start a US equivalent?

I've watched TPTV since it first came out... I emailed them to ask that they play some more Sherlock Holmes series. My Mum joked when I told her this, as she couldn't believe that a TV company was run from a shed at the bottom of a garden! ...but Lo & behold they did start playing the 1954 Sherlock Holmes series and they also often show the Basil Rathbone films too. Great TV station and long may it run!

Or GetTV, or Grit, or MyTV... the list of stations showing old content, goes on & on, & that's just over-the-air! Once you include streaming networks like PlutoTV, the quantity of vintage video available is quite large.
Problem is, it's all gotta be licensed before it goes on the air. So, we tend to see only stuff that's been in syndication all along.
Not sure how this "family run" station is handling copyright!?
Maybe the copyright terms on some of these old films has expired; how are they checking?
If you tried to broadcast old films in the US without tracking down every rights-holder & getting their OK, I don't think you'd be on the air long!

@@johnurban7333 Not very comparable. These guys are running old slice of life reels, newsreels, amateur reels, etc. MeTV and the like are running the same overplayed 'classic' movies and shows. Take a look at the website for this group and look at their schedule. It's so much more vast and interesting than anything on over-the-air TV in the USA.
Almost every TV market in the US had small independent locally-owned stations like this more than 30 years ago. Corporate TV (like CBS) and cable killed them. My local station was fun. Nothing but reruns of classic TV and classic movie festivals.
He says at 5:23 “how do you go beyond snogging?” Snogging = Kissing. I think he is confusing Snogging with Shagging. Either that, or I feel sorry for the state of his love life! 😂

Definitely they're showing a lot of vintage media! I don't think they're doing any lost-film recovery, though.
In fact, I'm not sure how even that "family run" UK channel, is dealing with copyright? Here in the US, a lot of those films wouldn't be public domain yet...

So, it’s British TV Land or MeTV. Or, going back to the ‘80s, Nick at Nite.
TV did forget about us; we thirst for the older actors with talent for yester-year. Today they are just a pretty face and body with NO talent whatsoever and nonsense plots.
There's definitely still plenty of talent, but you wouldn't know it from most modern casting & direction.
In particular, the writing of most shows today seems stilted, as if the writers rooms are handed a premise & ordered to script it & anything that would upset one of the corporate sponsors/owners, gets pulled before it even gets to air.
Also, they're recycling old premises as if they were told _that's_ "creativity". Do we _really_ need *_another_* batch of this-detective-is-special shows???
Ive mentioned Manhunt before well ive just seen the episode where Robert Hardy interviewd Cy what a dialogue! What acting!
Oh yes and to be honest it's the only moment i remember from the series, and i watched all 26 episodes back in the day when it was first show on LWT.😉
Its escapism from the horrors of modern Britain, we get to see how it used to be. Some of these old shows are the best TV you will ever see and you totally forget they're mostly in B&W.

They dont either show nice cosy films, if its classic, it gets on even if a brutal crime film or a horror. Oh and snogging is British for passionate kissing.

Strange to produce & air this whole segment, without once mentioning the absolute mountain of copyright tracing they must have to do! None of this vintage content could be legally aired if they didn't track down the rights-holders.
A lot of content would no longer have anyone to contact, & buying a piece of film doesn't mean you own the rights. For the public, such content will remain "lost" until the life+70yrs terms expire
Most of the content comes from the UK's major broadcasters (BBC and ITV) and film companies. It just happens to be things those channels don't want to show anymore.

@@prophetzarquon1922 They get bombarded with requests but the usual reply is something like "Hey we cannot just show anything we want, we have to negotiate a license for it first and then see if it still exists and is in a broadcastable condition"
Old people talking about war story tellers talking about their childhood things that happened in their hayday old people in ireland used be at same type thing talking about old donkeys in field in haydays

That's probably US. I think UK copyright is only 70 years:

They pay for licenses, people make requests all the time for their favourite old shows but they don’t get approval because as you say there are copyright issues. But somehow they still manage to fill their schedule with great classic tv.

Epic adventures and the early science fiction are in wrong aspect ratio. I blame CBS. Not only that, the first 10 seconds shows combing. And why this in 30p anyway, not 60p? Does CBS know anything about broadcasting moving images?
Don’t know how they can do it without being sued for copyright infringements.

@@fustigate314159not everything they show is that old. They do a lot of research to find who holds the rights and make sure they arrange a license.
They put the work in, they find the copyright owner and arrange a fee. People make suggestions all the time about their favourite shows, there’s a massive waiting list and somehow they get programmes on there that haven’t been seen for years.

Also incorrect about copyright- it’s 70 years after the death of the creator of the work in British copyright not 70 years after it was shown It’s not to be TPTV that has to clear those licenses that’s done by the people that own it from whom they obtain the license!

Every show literally had 0 diversity. I guess that is what older people liked.
Most of the content was made in the UK between 1935 and 1965, do you seriously believe anyone was concerned about 'diversity' back then?
Talking Pictures found and screened a fantastic vintage Eartha Kitt show. Also recently they made their own excellent documentary about the cult early 1960s gay themed film "The Leather Boys".
Great tv channel and THANK GOD - broadcast unPC and as films were originally presented with no cuts and with no woke BS thrown at us
