I hate self checkout. If I have a cart full of groceries, it's going to take me a good amount of time to ring them all up and bag them. Meanwhile, the grocery store's prices just keep going up, so I'm paying more while also doing THEIR job. When I was growing up in the 90's, I remember our grocery stores had cashiers and also seperate people who would bag the groceries. Then, the stores got rid of the baggers which really slowed the checkout lines down but the stores were saving money by not employing baggers. Now, it's no cashiers and the stores are still saving money because they're making their customers do the store's job. It's bullshit and we should all refuse to work for free.

I caught a local grocery store doing a very fascinating scam at the self checkout.
For Valentines Day they taped helium balloons on long strings to the checkout kiosks. They would bob around in the air and occasionally their barcodes would get scanned by the scanners, adding themselves to the bill. It would come up as a cryptic and confusing item description, where it was difficult to tell that it was a balloon unless you read it very carefully. If you notice it on the receipt after you pay, you have to take it to customer service to get a refund.
I thought at first it was a funny accident. But then the same thing happened to me again, 5 years later, at a different grocery store chain.

As a previous employee of a grocery store, I hate not doing self checkout. I am far more efficient than 99% of the register employees I meet that use one hand for everything. What I do hate is those customers with like 50 different things of vegetables holding up the self checkout lanes going the speed of a damn snail. They belong in the register lane where even the worse employee could go faster...

I’m probably in the minority here. But I’m going to be OK with that.
as a person who cut his teeth in the IT industry working for a company that installed, repaired, and trained people to use self checkouts, being paid $15 an hour back when that wasn’t considered minimum wage by any person, I gotta say that this industry changed my life. It saved my family.
Technology does not put people out of work. people put themselves out of work. And let’s face it, working at a checkout is not a skill by any stretch, it’s an important job, but it’s not a skill.
Industries shift all the time, because of technology. Why do people who are upset about self checkouts not get upset about ATMs? why do people who getupset about elf checkouts not get upset about cell phone technology? Didn’t we put thousands of phone operators out of business? What did they do?
If you want to boycott, big box stores, I absolutely support that. If you want to support, smaller, regional groceries, and mom and Pop stores, I absolutely support that. But as long as you are still buying at those big box stores, they don’t care if you use a self checkouts or not.
Incidentally, the stores in my area that used to use self checkouts, are now desperate to hire people at $15 an hour to pick groceries for delivery and pick up orders. People find ways to work, and they do it. It’s the way the world has been for hundreds of years. Getting mad at technology, or the companies that utilize it, is infantile and futile.

This line of thinking feels analogous to the Power-loom riots in 1800s where people fought against the use of looms to make clothes because it was taking jobs. Wouldn't you say its a good thing that now you don't need 100s of people working the fields because of tractors can do the work of many and now everyone has access to cheaper clothing through the use of looms? (not including fast fashion in this)
The same could be said about self checkout, hopefully it means people can move on to different more enjoyable/productive roles (if they don't/theres isn't jobs available that is a separate issue that should be tackled in another way without "rioting" against the technology).

This isn't as much about the self checkout as y'all are making it out to be, and that makes me sad for you.
My take - I love self checkout. I love even more the option to use a scan and go app and not have to deal with people. What I despise is the rosy perception that many have for the corporations of this country. They aren't what their marketing agencies would have you believe that they are. They hate us, but they need us. In my lifetime, I have seen customer service go from a legitimate service to what it is today, which is literally a tool used to waste your time. This is all by design, and that is the larger point of this.
As to the minimum wage, well, that is just proof of how the corporations run this country. Most if not all other western nations have a minimum wage that keeps pace with inflation, rising every year, sometimes multiple times a year. This is accomplished by a panel of economists whos' job it is to make sure that the people don't get left behind. Our minimum wage is a JOKE. It had its peak purchasing power 55 years ago and has floundered since. Meanwhile our own government servants give themselves a raise every year, to keep pace with inflation. Why you might ask?
Well, it is kept as low as possible for as long as possible so that when it does HAVE to get increased, we don't dare increase it too much, as it would be too much of a shock to corporate bottom lines and drive share prices down. It would also, as pointed out here, destroy small business, .
Conversely, if it were in lock step with inflation, the burden would be spread even between consumer and corporation. The way it is now, WE THE PEOPLE carry ALL OF THE BURDEN and Corporations enjoy the benefits. They privatize profits (They keep those) and they socialize their losses (we pay those in the form of bailouts and required social programs to subsidize low wages).
If we have to bail out these companies, why don't we see some sort of profit sharing, or something anything at all? Because the approximately 13000 lobbyists for the various corporate interests are there to make sure that the money flows one way, and the own the government to prove it.
The point of all of this is that we're getting fucked, in so many ways that it pays to pay attention to the details. As stated, I love self checkout, but I will no longer use it because I feel that ACK has a valid point re; the weaponization of the minimum wage. Hell, this is the first of his video's I've ever seen.

I don't think it was a convergence technology, we could have these at least in 90s. Maybe 80s. I believe the whole thing is the other way around: less and less people want to work in retail, lot's of jobs can't be fulfilled (at least here, where I live, a lot of people "missing" from retail) and this is a solution. Furthermore, as you said, the people still working in the checkout are overburdened. I usually don't like to interact people, so why would I want to interact with an overworked, grumpy asshole (and I'm pretty lucky here, rarely meet them)? This man speaks alot of truth. Ignorance of the law is no excuse. Even if youre high or drunk and get caught stealing. Depending on the severity of what you steal you will face the consequences accordingly. You can infact get banned from a store for virtually any reason especially if they catch you. Stop excusing criminal activity

Horrendous take. Why then are many places paying above minimum wage for these entry level jobs? Wouldn’t they all be paying at minimum wage and then firing employees for automation rather than willingly pay the employees more than minimum wage? Just because YOU refuse to value employees doesn’t mean everyone does.

Has nothing to do with that most of the profit goes to the ceo's and shareholders prices increase for more profit they would increase even if everyone working there was a slave that did not get paid but that are pretty much slaves because getting paid so low they get welfare payments e.g walmart.

With all do respect, I get it, but those jobs ain't coming back regardless, and im not standing behind people who have price matched half their shopping cart and watching them scroll thru their phone for 20 mins. Those jobs are gone no matter what anybody does. AI is the new employee and the rest of us will be shipped off somewhere and converted to something edible to feed others that have less.

Self check out was originally a way to skip the line at the cashier, and get out of the store in less time. Now it has become very burdensome. I've stopped using self checkout for years now, with a couple exceptions. One is if I have one or two items, and I need to get going ASAP. The second is in the smaller stores like Dollar General, where the cashier has a minimum amount of inventory they must restock during their shift, or they get written up. At a place like this, which is the only real competitor to Wally Mart, the staff will put a bell or squeaky toy on the counter to allert them when you need to check out. I always feel back if I'm the only one checking out, and I don't have much to check out. So, I'll hit the self check out,

These comments haven't really worked out. In the supermarkets all employee losses on the cash registers have been replaced by either floor employees or "at home shoppers" McDonalds franchise owners have said the kiosks/drive thru/apps have increased volume and have required them to hire more production workers .

I use self check out because sick of waiting in line when person doing the check out is talking to people instead of doing their job.
pay with cash so if they make a mistake and get something cheaper no credit card to track you down with.

I'm guessing your great grandfather was one of those people decrying the automobile because "what about all the people working in the horse buggy factories!" As to the shoplifting argument, quit fearmongering. No one's getting arrested for a simple mistake scanning something. If you try to switch tags or try anything that's actually illegal then yes you can be prosecuted if caught, but if granny misses scanning an item she's not going to jail.

    • @dwayneb1047

Lmao no but if you do it over and over and stealing over a certain amount is enough to arrest you. Its not making mistakes if its intentional. Its not about granny. Its about inflation. And normalizing shoplifting under the guise of ignorance is just asking to get arrested.. the laws applied to grannies equally when covid mandates were being enforced.
