- An 11.5 mile dayhike originating at the Madison Falls entrance of Olympic National Park in the Elwha River Valley.
The Olympic Hot Springs Road is closed to vehicular traffic at the park entrance after a large washout about a mile upstream.
A temporary foot/bicycle trail bypasses the road washout during a 3 and a half mile journey to the old Glines Canyon Spillway Overlook.
The hiker can continue south on the Smokey Bottom Trail, which roughly follows above the old western shoreline of the now drained Lake Mills.
After many ups and downs in elevation plus a large number of downed trees that are either step overs or crawl unders, the Smokey Bottom Trail reaches Boulder Creek, about 5.7 miles from the park entrance.
On the return trip, we explored the basin of the former Lake Mills and were treated to a sighting of a Roosevelt Elk herd on the eastern shore.
Good to see wildlife visiting the old lake bed. Enjoyable video to see during This difficult time we're all experiencing. Thanks Dan.
JAY Montgomery Thanks Jay. Sure was a fun day, about 29 cars at the gate parking lot, but most seemed to be hikers and bikers going up to the Hot Springs. Don’t know if you can Social Distance in those pools!
Beautiful views .... Excellent music for the ear.
Many thanks
Thanks for uploading this. It's nice to see what it looks like after the dam removal

Those elk are fantastic!
I've been waiting to see them near the old lake bed for a long time!

@@dankari1730 The river looks nice but after 100 years the lake uglied the place up a bit...
Amazing contents! I just started a channel myself, so I know how it feels to be making good videos and not being able to show it to others. Anyways, keep up the good work!
Best of luck!
Guess they will rebuild the dam eventually
There was a substantial cost savings in leaving the spillway as is. It won’t be rebuilt.
