- Actress Shay Mitchell plays the character Emily Fields on the murder mystery-thriller Pretty Little Liars. The Emily character is a closeted lesbian who gets outed on the show.
Mitchell doesn't take playing a gay character lightly. In an interview for George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight she explained what it was like.

Shay is THE perfect role model. And I think Emily Field is probably one of the best lesbian characters on tv because they don't make a big deal out of it. I loved her friends their reaction, I loved the story line with her mom - they handled this in such a great way.

This is why I love her!! She is real about it. She doesn't become defensive like most actors who play gay characters. She says it how it is and knows the impact she has. Most actors say it is about the connection between two people and not about their character's sexuality but Shay gets that being a gay character on TV has a massive impact on people (especially younger people) who connect with her character and gain confidence from seeing people they can relate to on their favourite TV shows.
She's also actually a wlw irl so it's great to see a wlw play a wlw on tv. Especially a woc. Great representation!

Everyone can relate to her Character on the Show, im straight and I can see myself in Emily shes Loyal, Caring and Brave and I can totally relate to that, what I Love about her character is that her sexual preference doesnt define her through the story line. Shays character is my Favorite.

Emily is my favourite too. Then Spencer. Then Aria. Then Hanna. I relate the most with Emily and Spencer, I think, since I'm a bit of a an overachiever and I do stress easily, but I love Aria and Hanna too. Even if I put Hanna last, I get tears watching her empathize with people and always care about them in her own quirky way.
I think Shay does a really good job of portraying homosexuality in a positive light!

so there you have it, don't try to pin labels to someone that seems to express disinterest in them. she doesn't identify as straight nor gay / lesbian.

Let's not forget she also played a Lesbian on a Web Movie The Grove and Guest Starred as a Lesbian on the Short Lived Series Brooklyn 99.

The character of Emily Fields gave me the confidence to come out as a lesbian. I thank this show for this because without it, I don't think I would ever have had the confidence because it shows a gay character with unsupportive parents and how she dealt with it. I t owe my whole life to pll. ❤️

+Geekette What I did was begin having LGBT+ related conversation topics with my mother and when we brought up bisexuality she asked, "Are you sure they aren't just confused?" And I said, "No, some people just like both genders equally." Then a few months later when I came out she was totally cool with it because I was filling up a tank with a few drops a water at a time...

Gabryel James Au début elle dit qu'elle était tellement dans son personnage que les émotions d'Emily l'affectaient aussi dans sa vraie vie et qu'elle s'est senti beaucoup mieux et libre une fois qu'Emily a fait son coming out. Elle a même organisé une fête avec ses amies tellement elle se sentait bien et était soulagée après ça. Elle dit aussi qu'elle a trouvé ça génial d'embrasser des filles et que c'était parfois mieux que d'embrasser des garçons car les filles elles sentent toujours bon. A la fin elle dit que des personnes viennent la voir et lui disent qu'ils auraient aimé que la série passe à la télé au moment où eux étaient toujours à l'école car ça les auraient aidé, ça auraient été beaucoup plus facile pour eux car ils s'identifie à son personnage car avant il n'y a avait pas de gays à la télé mais maintenant il y en a de plus en plus.
ps : tu dois dire "for a French girl" ou "for a French boy" ou plus généralement "for French people" mais tu ne peux pas dire "for french" tout court.
