I was to understand that the lag on Harris radios was due to their using a generic "board" (not made BY Harris) and then loading their software on it, where Motorola either makes, or designs, all their stuff, and therefore doesn't have those issues. Other than that, the "400" looks like a beefy radio that anybody, ham or not, would be proud to own. Too bad Motorola doesn't do "mission files", for if they did, owners might not have to haul around a laptop and cables when changing areas or assignments. Jus' sayin'.

It is possible that the lag may be due to something of that nature . You are right the mission profile programming is very nice but the Motorola radio central programming over a network somewhat makes up for that for an organizational user. I feel like the speaker microphone control set on the XL400P is superior for its intended market than the NEXT XN which I have also done a video on. Thank you for sharing and thanks for watching !

Love the L3s I just get APX radios through work. We do have the L3 but its dedicated 800. Awsome radio man! Iwouldnt bet my live on a 15.00 POS. That is a radio you can bet your familys life on. Solid investment!

I really like the features available on the speaker mic. I like the audio. The battery life seems to be on par with how much is running in the background on the radio. I’m curious to see what Moto unveils on the next series of Apex radios. Always enjoy your videos Bret. Very informative and helpful. Thanks!!

I am a Motorola fanboy, but I must admit, the Harris has some features that I like. The biggest disadvantages seem to be the battery life and many firmware bugs (channel selector lag, etc.). I wonder if GTS will produce a battery for the XL400P with more runtime.

There are some cool features and I hope they get the firmware stuff ironed out. Hopefully I will have an APX NEXT XN to play with in a few months. At least our core will support it for doing LTE testing etc. GTS does make awesome batteries. Im running them now on my 8k and the short ones last as long as the long impres ones. Thanks for watching !

If you get a after market battery you are no longer NFPA complaint. Which defeats the purpose of the radio, to be within NPFA standards.

    You are killing me!
The pain caused from watching the concrete hit required enough aspirin that i emptied the medicine cabinet.
    🤣
I’m getting most of my spare gear to donate to our local volunteer fire department who are still using low band VHF simplex to page / dispatch / and use for fireground communications. (46.xx) with GM300 mobiles and beat up P200LB portables.
A jump to UHF and a pair of Quantars w/ Hytera PD782 Portabłes / MD782 mobiles and Motorola XPR7550e / XPR5550 radios, they should be a bit better. I had a few Anytone portables, but didn’t even offer them up. (Actually kinda nice for ham/personal use on a budget) but I cracked up when I heard your commentary 🤣.
I’m gonna stick to a pair of portables in my old age years. I wish some of the multi-band, multi -protocol radios included analog/p25 phase 1+2 AND DMR.
You’ve had one of the best CZcams channels for quite a few years now.
    Thank you.

      Hands down!
Sadly, my wife hates it with a passion, along with any drone related channel.
Too many gadgets to empty the bank account. 🤣

No doubt the Harris is an excellent rig but the price point is beyond common sense for most hams who are not using it for professional use! Here in SoCal, there are dozens of repeaters that no one uses and basically are dead air 99% of the time. For the repeaters that do get used, you run into the same people day after day and it becomes pointless after one week!
Appreciate you sharing this hardware with the community!

For most hams anything above $20 is beyond common sense. However anyone that whines about paying $$$ towards thier hobby, is no hobbyist at all.

    Excellent review!
Disappointing to see the painfully slow boot time and slooooow response on the channel selector!
That’s been a Harris problem from their old M7100 mobiles, XG100 M and P radios, they get even slower when in scan mode.
Even the current XL45, 95 and 200’s have the lag time issue.
Our City and County agencies and departments have passed on Harris radios because of this issue as well as the Harris RPM2 programming software being twitchy and convoluted.
And the adjacent channel selectivity being noticeably worse than the APX radios?
    Get it together Harris!
Once again Motorola spanks the competition.

Thank you very much. The lag in mode selection is a real drag no pun intended. The radio losing its mind in the trunking mission plan was really bizzare. I thought I was in scan somehow but no it actually auto selected a random zone when I manipulated the mode selector rapidly back and forth. I should have the opportunity to review an APX Next XN in the near future and I'm looking forward to it. Thanks for watching !
