Happy homeschooling. My son would be turning cartwheels in school. He needed the mix of play and formal education. We've been finding our rhythm and that's what matter. Thorough review.

There's a free magic school bus curriculum that you can download for little kids. It goes along with some of the episodes and my kids loved it when they were younger.

This was very helpful, thank you! My daughter will be starting homeschool kindergarten in the Fall and I’m trying to find the right phonics curriculum.

You might look at The Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading. My son is 4.5 and reading on a first grade level because of it. You can do the lessons as quickly as you can because some are really simple or stretch it out over 3 weeks, as we have done, with lessons that were more complicated. And all you need is magnetic letters and notecards for you to write on. I'm serious, it's borderline miraculous how well it works and probably because it's so simple. I did copy the sentences so they were bigger and more space between them because we started just as he turned 3 but it worked. Now he's reading by himself.

My son just turned 2 last month and I’m looking into preK homeschool curriculums for him. He doesn’t learn in the traditional way just yet (going through workbooks etc). He has his screen time while we eat; so, I decided to get the preschool prep company and rock and learn phonics dvds. Holy cow! This kid learned his letter sounds in 1 week and can identify all of the consonant blends. We use the flash cards as we watch the dvds, and I’ve just started introducing a few sight words every other day. It’s a little more screen time than I would want for a 2 year old, but it’s only during meal time and the results have been soooo amazing. Every child learns differently; so, I just do what works.

Does Explode the Code have teacher's guide or is it just kid's workbook? Thank you for the great review!

Thank you and your so welcome! The book I have here is just the student workbook. I found it pretty easy to navigate, but if you wanted there is an additional teacher book that is very inexpensive.

My just turned 5 yr old is also struggling with blending. He knows letter sounds and can identify begging sound... sometimes ending sound.
But blending is difficult for him. He does go to private school but I think need some help at home.
I don’t know what to do?

Hugs mama, after teaching preschool and then homeschooling my. own I can say in confidence all kids learn at different speeds. Just 5 is young. My son is still struggling somedays with blending, my oldest daughter was just like him and now in 5th grade reads well above grade level. My 8 year old read great at 5 though. They are all different so no worries. We love the leapfrog videos. They are a different approach and catch my kiddos attention. Also the explode the code books are fantastic and inexpensive for extra phonics help.

We hated horizons for K. It’s ridiculously advanced and boring. The pictures are also ugly and a lot of times you have no clue what it is. We switched to explode the code and the good and the beautiful and my child is thriving now!!
