@@Bloody_Polly I would argue that it is, albeit a very unique and unconventional pop song. Morrissey himself always referred to The Smiths and his solo career as pop music.
@@milksteak9213 same here, because Morrissey's voice is so deep it tends to drown out the bass so its really nice to be able to here the full extent of Andy's immense playing on the song. I also really enjoy how Johnny plays around the bass and isn't afraid to let the bass lead the instrumental rather than the guitar.
One of the coolest things about the way Marr and Rourke played guitar and bass in the Smiths is that they're both basically playing guitar, with Marr mostly playing the 3 thinner strings for their janggly treble, while Rourke is playing the thicker 3 strings, except on bass. But you could essentially combine what Rourke plays on bass with what Marr plays on guitar on the same instrument. That's why Rourke's bass lines go so well with Marr's guitar, because they're operating under the notion of playing the same instrument.

The bass complements (colours) the lead melody perfectly. I think it's called counterpoint if I'm not mistaken, and it's so nice to hear. So cleanly timed+mixed too... Makes me glad to be alive in these times.

Part of the jangle sound is Nashville tuning, using the accompanying strings on a twelve string as your main strings, that's why it never sounds muddy or deep, because a lighter string creates a lighter sound

These instrumental tracks just demonstrate how underrated Rourke and Joyce were. To call them session musicians is an insult.
Yeah, No.
No I mean the bass and the drums hence Rourke and Joyce
the bassist maybe not, but as for the drummer im sorry but he really is just your average drummer
I don't understand why you cannot admit that at least Rourke was brilliant with these basslines. Just listen to how the bass drives the whole song...
That might be true, still his style contributed to the whole sound.
The introduction to his song will always give me life idk.
Probably one of the most exciting song introductions ever in pop music
