Predicting a team will use moneyball to focus on plate disclipine, on base percentage and of course how many steals or how fast a player can wreck havoc on bases.

The fact that Nolan Ryan struck him out over 10 times in his career is insane. Nolan Ryan actually got Ricky Henderson two times in one game, and the second time he struck out Ricky was number 5,000 for his career. Nolan Ryan did not have enough superlatives when he was describing Rickey Henderson as a ball player. Nolan said Ricky is everything you want in the baseball player

It’s funny as yes, he learned how to do it…his focus was on hits and steals. Not the long ball… but once he began to focus..he cranked them. Rickey good..real, real good.
I had the honor of seeing Rickey collect his 3000th hit live at Tony Gwynn’s last game and when he held up that bat plaque even at 6 years old I knew I was seeing something truly special. What an absolute legend!

In the early to mid 90's his baseball cards were treated as almost common which I always found strange from a record breaker who had won two World Series rings with two teams. Maybe because it was Oakland and Toronto, and of course home runs being so important *yawn* even Brady fn Anderson was popping 50+ into the seats

I played baseball for Little League and High School from 86-94 and stealing bases was my exciting thing about baseball to me. Rickey Henderson and Vince Coleman were the 2 funnest players to watch IMO. I could hit for contact and was fast but I was 6ft tall and 145lbs I wasn't hitting any homeruns. Rickey Henderson actually hit more leadoff homeruns than any other player in MLB history.

I heard the tenure story a little differently. He was sitting in Tony Gwynn's seat on the base and someone said "that's Tony's seat, he's got tenure." To which Rickey replied "Rickey got 20 year." Either way Rickey stories are the stuff of legend.

I was born in the 60's and had the pleasure of seeing some of the greatest ballplayers who ever played the game. Let me tell you this, Rickey Henderson was one of the greatest I ever saw. Always exciting, and never disappointed. Whenever he came up to bat, you just knew something was gonna happen.

I was born in 72 and grew up a Phillies fan. But Rickey was my favorite player. I loved his brashness. He was fun to watch, too.
This was VERY well done! As many others have stated, Rickey is my favorite player all-time. So when someone takes the time to show just how incredible a player he was, I have to watch. I’m glad I did, too. The game has just not been the same since he left it.
There were some redundancies in this video but still a fantastic way to spend 77 minutes.

As a Blue Jays fan Rickey was a great addition to the 93 team. Winning back to back World Series was a great accomplishment and something I'll remember for the rest of my life.
In a Red Sox fan, have been since age 11 in 1990. It was an honor to watch Rickey for that one year. He was old and so far past his prime, but he's literally baseball, like the other greats. Ted Williams was pure baseball, Mays, Brock, Musial, all of the absolute legends, they all personify the game in one way or another, Rickey's right there. It's just in his bones.

Great video man. It’s funny to me how people say, “of course he’s got this record, he played for almost 30 years”. What they forget is that he broke that steal record In fewer seasons than Brock did. Honestly, I don’t know if his steal record will ever be broken. Dude was for real.

Thank you for educating me about Ricky. I had figured he was just a great base stealing machine. A lot of others did as well, I guess. That’s why he is underrated. Fans think long ball too much. Ricky is great at all aspects of the offensive game. Like no one else.
I never watch a baseball but I’m always so fascinated by the stories of the greats. I first learned about Ricky when secret base did a video on them and found his career and personality so interesting

My favorite Ricky Henderson fact: Derek Jeter took about 18 years to break the Yankees team all time stolen base recors. Ricky set that record in just 3 1/2 years with the team.

Great story about Mac Suzuki, he was expelled from high school in Japan so his parents set him off to the US to get a job without knowing english at the age of 16, somehow he found his way into working as a laundry boy for a non-affiliated Class-A minor league team the Salinas Spurs and they say what the heck and let him pitch for 1 inning in the final game of the 1992 season. Off of that he was able to gain a full season contract for 1993 with another non-affiliated Class-A minor league team in the San Bernardino Spirit at the age of just 18, where he stood out as a closer. Off that season he was able to catch the attention of MLB scout and he signed with the Mariners and worked his way up the system by 1996 to become the third Japanese born player ever to make it to the MLB and the very first to ever play in the American League. He is one of the rare Japanese born players who played in the MLB before ever touching NPB.
Additional story, I now own the exact glove he is wearing in the headshot photo they use on Baseball-Reference from his time with the Royals.

Ricky is the greatest baseball player I've ever seen. I saw steal bases live in Oakland for years. Absolutely thrilling. His production speaks for himself. My GOAT baseball player.
Dave Stewart in the 1989 World Series started 2 games; Game 1 and Game 3. He won both games with a 1.69 ERA in 16 IP. That’s why Stewart won MVP over Rickey
I still like the time he beat the Blue Jays all by himself. He's one of the few batters that you can't contain by walking him. In game one against the great Dave Steib, he manufactured two runs out of thin air. A walk, and a takeout slide resulting in runs scored.

My favorite Rickey Henderson story isn't true, but is totally believable. The story goes that late in his career Rickey was trying to find a team to pick him up and he called the GM in San Diego and left a message. The message was "This is Rickey, calling on behalf of Rickey. Rickey needs a job."

Rickey and Ichiro are the two ball players that I think get frequently overlooked just because they didn't hit a lot of home runs. But they might be the two best all around baseball players of all time. Thanks for the video, this was a great way to spend an hour!

Welp, I'm 40 years old this year and I've been a huge sports fan my whole life and watched a heck of a lot of videos, documentaries, statistics, you name it. THIS is my favorite one I've ever watched. EVER. What a fantastic job you did here putting this together and all the clips, interviews, highlights, accolades, etc... It was a pleasure to see and was sad it had to end even after an hour of Ricky. When I was a kid I was a big fan of the A's with the Bash Brothers and McGwire/Canseco coming into the league and you pair those two up with a guy like Ricky who is always on base!!! It was like breaking up Kobe and Shaq but there was 2 Shaqs lol! Really makes you wonder what could have been if they didn't break the team apart dammit. I was too young at the time to realize all the records that Ricky was setting along the way but I certainly can now. Great job man, I tip my cap to you my friend. Unfortunately, that John Olerud story isn’t real. Both Rickey and John have said this. However, both have admitted that they wish it was true which I think is almost as good.

I'm an A's fan, born in 1983. I watched Rickey my whole childhood. It was some of my best memories. Thank you for this documentary. It was beautiful. I'm always glad he FINALLY got the recognition he deserved.

Rickey Henderson was one of my idols as a child. He pushed me to want to be a better ball player, and to learn to be a better base runner. I miss his style of play, and the running game, in general. He is definitely one of the greatest baseball players of all time, and extremely underrated, especially how the sport is today. You did an a great job on this video, thanks for sharing!!!

As a Jays fan, we were super excited to have him and recognized the effect he had on opposition regardless of his poor play.
He really was the greatest of all time. I was lucky enough to get to meet him. I was a cook in Seattle when he came to the restaurant I asked his server to allow me to serve him. I told Rickey he was my hero and right then his face was on the TV right over my head. A magical moment. Good times.

wow at age 40 with the mets he hit 315 which is the 2nd highest number of his career although he only played in 121 games he had 526 plate appearances and 438 at bats i think that would qualify.....what a legendary 25 year career wow so insane.....

My man didn't leave anything out and put every detail of Ricky's storied career so perfect,that if you have one brain cell and it's handicap, you could still follow and understand everything that was going on from the time Ricky stepped on the field to the last time.
