    RM wrote this song as his response to being told by the other rappers that he cannot rap and his rap is slow since he became an idol and had left underground rap scene. The lyrics do not make sense because that was his intention. At the end of the song he threw down the challenge to which they still have not responded. He shut them up by proving yet again he was called rap monster for a reason

    The thing is that Namjoon is Korean and his language his a big part of who he is, his artistry and writing. His bars have Hangeul and cultural nuances that would be lost in translation. If you look at it from that perspective, asking him to rap in all in English does not really make sense. There are plenty of translations online, but Doolset is the best and goes in depth with the meanings. The coded lyrics video on youtube are not very good (they use google translate).

    • @OT7_DopeOldARMY
      @OT7_DopeOldARMY Před 4 měsíci +10

      I 100% agree. To fully appreciate the BTS rapline, and especially Namjoon's (RM's) skills, you would miss a lot if they only rapped in English. Their wordplay and storytelling is entirely culturally based, but also RM is famous for achieving wordplay across languages. He's incredible. If he only rapped in English (or for that matter, wasn't fluent in English and couldn't insert the English in his rap), that entire aspect of what makes him great would be lost.
      Also, I would add that the entire purpose of rap is to tell your own, authentic, stories. Asking native Koreans to rap in English means it simply can't be as authentic, if for no other reason than Korean is a very visual language. I suggest RM's "Trivia: Love" and looking up the translations by Doolset in order to understand the nuances that he brought to that song, to seee what I mean.

    RM is a master class level. His ability to switch cadences, languages, beat flow, etc. all with intensity and intelligence. He really is untouched. You do need to look up the lyrics...this was in response to the haters. Doolset will explain the Korean metaphors and nuances. RM emulates NAS. RM is ALL bars. He takes lyrics very seriously. This was a challenge to his haters. It literally shut everyone up.

    Haters/Antis and other senior Underground rappers thought he was a "Joke" because he became a Pop Idol, would lose his rapping edge. RM is fluent in English, he could rap something all English if he wanted too but still won't get the respect he deserves in both rap worlds I feel! RM said "Hit Me" and Army are still waiting for any response! 😂🤩👏🏽🕺🎶🎤👑🥇🏆💜🌎 #SexyNuKimNamjoon #RM

    Here’s the thing coming from an older international (USA) ARMY. We don’t categorize BTS especially in terms of KPop. To us BTS is BTS. We are not trying to compare them to Drake, Cole or any other rapper in the game. Just like we don’t put them in the category of a “boy band”. We just listen and appreciate their exquisite delivery of their music. It’s not necessary to put those labels on them because we love them for being just them which is quite unique. BTS is just BTS which is incredible all by themselves. To be honest I really don’t like or listen to K-pop but I love me some BTS and listen to them exclusively. When you can just listen to them without bringing any other filtered opinions you will be able to appreciate their stand alone brilliance.

    You can almost always find a video with english subs. We will never mind you taking a moment to search for it. Just for future videos, please take the extra minute. I'm sure you've heard by now that one of BTS's biggest strengths is their lyricism. Well, RM is one of the main songwriters. He was a poet first and still is. His flow is nasty, but of course there are bars. Straightforward bars and bars with multiple levels that hit different after multiple listens. Wordplay in Korean and English. Schemes. You name it.

    RM is first and foremost a poet. He loves language and his ability to turn a phrase is beyond measure. There are also a few breakdown videos for this song. The purpose behind this particular track was to show off his ability to rap fast and switch up flows... a lot of it is almost stream of consciousness. There are definite bars. I would put him closer to J-Cole out of the three you mentioned.

    There is a video with lyrics on it. You just have to search the version with English subs. The lyrics are written stream of consciousness. He slides from one subject to another in a way that seems like you can hear his inner thoughts. I think he said he wrote it in like a half hour. But just because he wrote it fast, doesn’t mean it doesn’t isn’t brilliant. He uses a lot of rap tropes, and in one place the actual cadence, to make fun of other rappers who criticize him. At the same time he is pulling out all the tricks in this song to show he’s a better rapper than they are. You can seriously study these lyrics all day. They have layers of meaning.
    I don’t listen to western rap, so I don’t have good references to compare to.
    RM is poetic and lyrical. His songs have a lot of deep meaning and metaphors. Suga is often compared to Eminem. He is raw and honest in his lyrics. His emotional intelligence is incredible. Jhope is the most versatile of the BTS rappers in that he also sings. His rap style dances on the beat, allowing him to play with flow switches frequently. He’s also versatile on genre. He plays with pop, hip hop and rock/new metal. His Lollapalooza set is legendary.

    Newer ARMY likes to say that RM wrote this song as a JOKE so the lyrics "don't make sense" but there's some an underlying mastery that showcases how sarcastic and hard-hitting battle harden the rap veteran is (he was known and feared in the underground battle scene as Runch Randa, as a teen). One of my favorite breakdowns analyzing this song was written by MoonieJoonie on the former bird app. Bora lyric analysts can be very in-depth but once you get multiple perspectives, you start to understand and really appreciate the chess level layers our rap line unleashes in various songs (most times in the most unassuming songs, like their "pop" love songs) 😂

    RM was criticized by other rappers before saying that he's no longer a rapper because he's slow and he only focuses on deep lyricism so he did this, fast rap, words that rhyme just for the sake of it even if it doesn't make any sense like other rappers do. He showed them that i can do what you do a hundred times better. Which is why the song is called JOKE.

    Understood what you were saying re rap in English. Wasn’t about the English. People judge cadence, flow, bars, in their own languages. If you don’t know the language it’s harder to suss out those things and tell how good a rapper is “technically “ at rapping. That’s a compliment. It means that just hearing him makes you think he’s good (which we know is the case, because you said it). But, he peaked your interest enough to make you want to prove it out, so when you talk about him, you can back up what you say with proof. (ie…”you know when RM raps in (title)…he’s [detailed bragging rights], so you should check him out”).
    Makes sense.

    • @UglyaceEnt

      Exactly. And some ppl don’t get that. When it comes to rap there are a lot of criteria’s.

    • @rafaelsmith5737
      @rafaelsmith5737 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@UglyaceEntYes, there's lot of criteria when it comes to rapping, like flow, complex wordplay, cadence, substance, beat, etc. but we can narrow it down in 2 things:
      Rap skills & bars.
      He has both.
      More like in terms, of Lyricism, he's on completely different level.

    • @rafaelsmith5737
      @rafaelsmith5737 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@UglyaceEntlet me give you example why it's very very inhumane to only let him rap in one language (English).
      For example let's use his very simple rap verses:
      Yeah I'm ill, I'm ill, I'm ill itself
      For a Westerners ear.
      He only just said he's ill 3x, what's so impressive about that?
      But in reality, he just said he's ill (as in sick in English) another ill cause ( ill sounds like no.1 in Korean) , lastly another ill for slang in English which translates to : sick = cool.
      Basically RM is able to brilliantly say
      " He's sick, cause he's no.1 (on top), which is why he's dope (cool) itself "
      While only using one f*cking word
      The worst part is, if he has rap battle with someone who's only fluent in one language, they'll just think he's stupid for rapping such "basic lines" 🤦
      But ordinary people can't even begin to understand his bars
      Another prime example is his line from his song called Trivia: love:
      "I'm just a person, but you corrode all my edges and you turn me into love"
      In English that's already a great line, cause he's like poetically saying this person broke him best way possible and made him accepting of love
      But people don't even begin to understand how complex & layered that line was.
      Cause in Korean, Person is pronounced as Saram, and Love is pronounced as Sarang.
      So if you write those 2 words in hangul = Korean writing, Person & Love are almost written the same way, except for one tiny difference
      Person = saraM
      Love= saraNG
      The letter "M" in Person is written like a box so it has sharp edges
      While the "NG" in Love written like round circle, which has no edges
      So when he wrote "I'm just a person, but you corrode all my edges, and turn me into love" he also meant that literally and not just metaphorically.
      Cause if you indeed corrode the edges of the written word "Person" in Korean it will turn into "Love".
      That type of word play is completely unmatched in throughout the music industry. Cause even the most genius rapper can only construct their most brilliant wordplay in one dimension (1 language). But even if there are indeed another intelligent rapper who can construct their bars in 2 dimensions, he/she is still no match for RM, cause RM is literally writing his bars in 3 dimensions, cause he even used "how the bar is being written" to construct his own bars.
      Not to mention, he's not limited to only 2 languages. (English & Korean). Cause he uses japanese & spanish words as well.
      So he's completely on different league compared to other rappers.
      But even if he only use two languages he can still create rap verses 7 layers deep by only using one word.
      But you must be thinking, if he's only allowed to use one language in a rap battle, he must be quite weak right?
      After-all his domain in wordplay is using different languages. If he's forbidden to use it, then how can he create wordplay?
      And this is were it gets interesting, if RM indeed only use English, his wordplay is still unmatchable. The only downside is, even English people can't even begin to understand his English bars. 🤦
      For example: If other English rap heads starts dissing each other and you try to include RM in the competition. RM will be disqualified immediately cause his English bars doesn't even makes sense.
      Let's say he just rapped this line "Old caterpillars, y'all are group of Panda, frog like storks stuck in a well. I'm a calico cat, y'all mice, I pick and put an X like KAWS. I'm blue mold in this rap game but I'm a whale in 52 hertz circling around like 134340.
      You're an English speaker right?
      And that Rap verse is completely written in English, can you understand it?
      Please answer yes or no.
      If you can't I'll just explain it to you only if you want to.

To hip hop fans his word play is amazing to this generation he just saying words

      @@UglyaceEnt No, the problem with BTS is not about the language itself, it's about "INTELLIGENCE".
      You just reacted to Blood Sweat and Tears right? You've also read the English subtitles.
      Since you're an English speaker you can obviously understand English words.
      But you said Blood Sweat and Tears is for women. Can you explain to me why you think it's for women?
      Is it about how they look? Or is it about the lyrics? Just to be clear, you're not wrong when you said it's for women, but that's just the first layer. You only manage to scratch the surface layer of the song.

    TBH the lyrics are not really in that important in this song he said it was meaningless word play, he was responding to those who think that being able to rap fast was more important than the context of the lyrics..and saying he wasn't hip hop and not a real rapper because he was in an idol group so he was really just showing off his ability..... I think it's Namjoons brain his intelligence makes him different

    I listen then listen to an explaination like DKDKTV who is an english speaking Korean. That is the only way to get the doubles and trebles and non pg translations. Cultural historical and pop cultural references. One word modifier in korean can give a sentence multiple possible meanings and RMs 148 IQ is genius enough to mean them all. So thats why explaination videos are really interesting often making me laugh out loud when I eventually realise it all. Take BAEPSAE which should always be watched live in concert. Its catchy and the choreos hilarious but get the explaination and it blows your mind. Its one of BTS scathing social commentaries. Without the explaination video a translation does not explain that though a word means this to a korean it sounds like another word and therefore its actually telling baby boomers to fu.k off.

    RM is one of those people that just... He defies definition, description, explanation, what have you. I can tell you this much, though. You can't spell ARMY without RM, and BTS wouldn't be the same without their beloved (and sometimes beleaguered) leader.

    Just a quick comment: you always refer to BTS and K-Pop like they're synonymous. It would be like referring to all American music and having to mention that it's American: J-Cole/American Rap, Dolly Parton -American - Country, Muddy Waters, American Chicago Blues. Get my point? BTS is not a sub- or category of K-Pop. K-Pop refers to an industry not a musical-style. They are just BTS - and yes, they have many styles. But they're not the same or similar to other K-Pop groups. I think it's more accurate to refer to their style of music versus their country of origin as a catch-all. Just a thought.

    If he rapped completely in English it would make even less sense to the casual listener. The cultural references and nuances would get lost in translation. And why rap in one language? You can get a better rhyme scheme when you have 3 or 4 to work with.

  • @cboz6137

    Ugh.. I think you appreciate them, but you say "we're trying to cover all Kpop" and then "this is Joke." I'm not sure what you think Kpop is, but it isn't JOKE and BTS is beyond KPOP.
    They started out HipHop and added the vocals and choreo of KPOP at a time when that wasn't done. As a result they were shunned by both industries. But they only ever get shoved into the KPOP category regardless. Just frustrating. 90% of KPOP don't write their own stuff. And those that do now, is only because of BTS. BTS (especially RM and the rapline, but all of them) have contributed to the creative process since the beginning.
    They are original. They are artists. And then you ask if we consider him the JCole, Kendrick, or Drake of Kpop? What the heck? Is JCole just the JCole of American Rap? He's RM like JCole is JCole. Seriously they both got the layers and substance and style. RM is up there with the best of the best (it is just he raps in 3 languages and flows fluently switching it up between them, while they rap in 1) So imo RM is #1. If this was a rapper from anywhere else in the world like Egypt or wherever... going off like this, you wouldn't then suddenly ask, are they the JCole of EPOP? I mean fr... what about this is POP?
    Anyway... just in a mood I guess. I do like that you have BTS playlist and include all the boys, that's perfect. But you watching this without lyrics... after saying people been requesting it... I am sure for a fact someone left you the right one with subtitles. I probably did at that. So this is just insulting. It makes zero sense to hear the rhythm, flow changes, style of delivery and speed and intensity of this and not want to know what he is saying. All you got to do with BTS is just google the song you want with "Eng Sub" after it. But honestly if you think GOT 7, Stray Kids, and RM are all the same and you don't feel compelled to look for lyrics, then as RM says, just "Do You" and enjoy your journey. But this one hurts. I have learned I just don't have patience with reactors who don't do lyrics for this video.

    Hes the RM of KPop...He shreds anyone in the Western Music (My opinion of course)..there is no comparison able because I think Western Rappers are garbage. IF I had to put someones name on it then it would only be JCole because hes the only one with actual talent (IN MY OPINION). If the song was in English dubbed it wouldnt flow the same.
