Great tips!! Here is one more. If you forget to stop recording and you land and turn of your drone, chances are you will corrupt your entire SD card. Happened to me twice, so before turning off the drone check your controller and make sure you stopped recording.

I have my Mini 3 Pro ordered and now that I am aware of the battery tab issue I will be paying close attention to them (as I also ordered the fly more kit) From what I am reading is it seems to be more than just an isolated issue and for the price we pay DJI should be covering this problem.
I am aware of the "Junk" screwdriver DJI supplies from my first Mavic Mini and have been using one from my Jewelers/gunsmith set. Thanks for the tips.

DJI really either needs to stop including a screwdriver or more importantly, include a decent , correctly sized one with each drone. For what we are paying for the drone, skimping on something as critical as a screwdriver is short sided and just causes unneeded hassle. Nice review and reminder on some often overlooked things to insure great flights Russ!

After your comment about the Phillips screwdriver, I started looking around at what I had. I tried a screwdriver that comes with some glasses and sunglasses. It is a small keychain type with a flathead on one end and a Phillips on the other end . It seems to be a good fit . I was able to unscrew and tighten the propeller screws.

Glad to have found your video again @51Drones I just had a battery tab crack and it wasn't the 249g battery. It was the plus battery. I contacted DJI and I'm going to send just the battery back to them to hopefully get it replaced as my battery only has 10 cycles on it. I am also hearing this happening to a lot more people. If it continues DJI should replace the locking tabs with a better model. I think it's a defect in the plastic with fatigue cracks. Try shoving the battery in really hard and see if that makes a difference. You know like if you were to make sure it locks in.

But I agree with what you said it's probably a bad batch maybe the plastic mixture wasn't right or something. Also I ordered the screwdriver. Working on computers and other electronics I need a better screwdriver set than this mini set and the one at DJI gives you kind of just makes things harder because not being the correct size just strips then what and you got to get a new and do a lot more stuff. Hey Russ! (I know this comment is a little long, but please be sure to read the last paragraph.)
Great tips! I've owned 6 DJI drones and also work in IT, and I never knew to format my card in the actual device it will be used in. Thanks for that!
Here's a tip regarding the battery hub: If you're out flying and don't use all the batteries you charged, use the hub with the fully charged battery/batteries to partially recharge the controller! Keep an eye on them and unplug it when they get down to 2 solid lights and one blinking. This will pull the batteries down to a suitable state of charge for storing them. Don't forget to finish charging the controller.
Russ, here's a tip you might want to share with your followers, maybe in a "short" or something: I just did the latest update to the Mini 3 Pro and then drove an hour to a location I wanted some good photos of. After doing the update, I went through and double checked all my settings (I thought). I didn't see any that had changed. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. I went out and got some great winter shots of an area I'm wanting to do a 4-seasons series for. There was plenty of snow and the sun was out. I got some great shots. When I got home and went to dump them onto my "working drive", I discovered that my photo format had changed from JPG/RAW to just JPG. This isn't the end of the world, but I was pretty disappointed. I almost always process my photos in post.
Thanks again for all your great content!

@@CameronMaser yes, they still do, but over a period of (I believe) up to 10 days. I'm not sure if being fully charged for this long multiple times has a negative effect, or not.
I also bought the new "YMCA" (so called for its logo) charger that charges up to 4 batteries at the same time. It has a cool new feature where you can move a switch to a 60% setting that only charges your dead batteries up to 60% for storage. It will not discharge batteries that are above 60%, however.

9:01 when i had a homebuilt drone with the naza board (dji brand flight controller), i was reccomended to calibrate imu if you havent flown in a long time, or you move the drone a long way.. like on vacation trips.. as for screws, if they are very soft etc, i would be reeeeaaaally careful when screwing em in again.. its very easy to missalign the threads and having it either fudge up the screw or the threads on the motor in this case.. especially in smaller screws/threads..

Regarding the charge cradle, after flying, I put each discharged batteries in the cradle in preparation for charging in the field. That's an easy way to keep track which batteries need charged, since these DJI batteries don't have the charge status button on each battery. Then, if I need to charge my phone or controller, there's usually enough power left in my discharged battery for recharging phones or controller, especially if your in the habit of landing at 20 or 25% charge. Using that leftover power can be handy, without discharging a 100% battery, so you can use all 100% batteries for flight power, and get maximum flight time.

Russ. Awesome channel and info you share. This stuff about these screws is crazy. Interesting they put locktite blue on them. Is it known for these to come loose over time / use? Using such loctite on such a small thread that needs to be serviced occasionally would require added torque thus causing heads to get stripped. Probably applying a bit of heat to the driver used to remove them a few seconds before turning them out would ease the process.

We are all different but.... As a private pilot I used to review the flight again, from the memory. Some day it was experiencing the joy again, other days less good happenings were thought through.
Doing the same for drone flights fells natural. Criticize myself, if/when needed.

Hi Russ, regarding the battery locking tabs, I have 3 batteries, one came with the drone and two with the fly-more kit; one battery developed the issue, I thought unlucky, then another went; I numbered the batteries and from this I believe that the two with the fly-more had the issue, the one that came with the mini 3 Pro seems fine.
I contacted dji when the first one went and they suggested I would need to pay a service charge that was more than the battery cost, so I bought another.

Russ.... Thank you for another great video! The SD card issue can be solved by just simply keeping your SD cards in your devices. New device = New SD card every time! That batter tab issue is highly concerning! Maybe it was a bad batch of plastics. It could vary from when it was made to. Or maybe QC didn't do their job properly. đŸ€” I can only comment or speculate.

    • @daryllarsen8858
      @daryllarsen8858 Pƙed rokem

There are a couple of drawbacks to leaving the SD card in the drone when copying files from there to a computer. It's two to three times faster copying them off a USB 3 card reader vs directly from the drone. The drone needs to be turned on when you're doing the copying which wastes battery charge and the Mini 3 gets very warm when it's left on and not moving. That's not good for the drone. I've been pulling SD cards out of drones and Gopro's to dump the data for years and had very few issues. It does require paying attention to what you're doing and not mixing up cards. But, that's just me. 🙂

Nice job Russ, thank you. Re the lock-tab cracking. I suspect this could be due to an issue with the injection moulding machine that produces the battery case, causing the plastic not flowing into the mould as it should, or at the right temperature. The flow of plastic when it is injected into a mould often meets itself coming from a different direction, particularly in intricate designs. If the conditions for injection are not quite right, the temperature of the plastic or the mould being one of them, then these may only partially mix and bond at the meeting point (in this instance, at the hinge-point of the locking tab) causing a weakness even though it may look visually OK. This problem can be temporary and fixed my making adjustments to the machine, in which case would account for why not all lock tabs are failing. Just a thought.

Was going to make a similar comment, having worked at a plastics manufacturing facility. There were many occasions we had to toss parts due to something being "off" either with the machinery or with the raw material. The design of these tabs obviously demand a higher tolerance rate than the manufacturer is providing.

I had no idea the charger could be used as a power bank. I seen the output port and the "power" button on it, but never put the two together. Thanks Russ, great tips!

I used to screen record every drone flight that I made, but I found that RC controller didn’t have enough memory to support some of the more advanced functions, like Active Track and Master Shots. I found that the tracking wasn’t as smooth when screen recording was on. Perhaps, that was a bug that was present when they introduced these features, and it is not there now. I don’t know.

Both my Mini 3 Plus batteries have cracked. These batteries were purchased in the fly more kit July 2022. Returned one in November 2022 to DJI hoping for a replacement since the batteries have a 6 month warranty. No luck on a replacement from DJI. Just full price on a new battery. I was eventually able to get a discount on a new battery. Since that time the second one has cracked. I did think it was me. Maybe pressing too hard. Thanks for the video.

👍. Great video. What’s the make and model of the screwdriver you talked about in your video? I just changed out two propellers and that mini screw driver that came with the Mini 3 Pro stinks. One last question, does the screw need to be flush with propeller in order to be installed correctly? I had to put a lot of torque on the screw in order for it to tighten down and get it flush. Thanks!

The screws need to be seated, flush with the propellers. Yes, the Dji screwdriver stinks, but it works.

The screws used with the DJI drones are JIS, Japanese Industrial Standard, and not Phillips screws. The difference is just enough (look it up) to make Phillips head screwdrivers not fit quite right, but JIS screwdrivers will fit a Phillips screw just fine. DJI will tell you P0 is the recommended size for your JIS blade screws, and the best screwdriver for that in my opinion is the Vessel 910 P0 x75. Perfect fit and magnetized to hold those tiny screws onto the screwdriver tip. Handle is just right for the torque value and the 3" blade (6" overall) gets you in close for control. It's pricey, but worth it.

They have a 6-piece precision screwdriver set that includes 0 through 0000. They're not magnetic and I'm not sure whether they're ferrous enough to magnetize, but it's a good value and the perfect kind of grip and shaft length for dealing with small screws like this. You can find them doing a search on "TD-56S Vessel JIS".

I have 1 249 and 4 large batteries, so far so good but I do look at them every time I use each because I was aware many were having issues and dji won't replace them- now a known defect. I pinch the two tabs lightly with my thumb and middle finger leaving my index finger bent between them and centered, then I extend my index finger which levers the battery out without stressing the tabs. Lets face it, the plastic is super thin for weight and definitely not expected to last for ever.

In regards to using the battery charger with batteries in it to charge other devices, there is something to be aware of. Batteries have a certain number of cycle times for recharging and drone batteries are not the cheapest, so I don't know that I would use them for anything other than the drones or for a one off thing where there isn't a better option.

The Klein screwdriver is excellent. But just be aware that the large size of the handle can allow you to over torque small screws, either twisting them in two or in messing with the female threads in the hub. That handle provides you with significant mechanical advantage.

    • @lambo_drives
      @lambo_drives Pƙed rokem +1

I have the smaller version of the Klein and love the gray pivot on the end of the handle. it allows pressure straight down on the screw, thus lowering any chance it might pop out of the screw head if one has to apply a little extra downward force.
Stripped out two heads from original Mini 3 Pro with the fake gray phillip head stick (won't even refer to it as a tool)
Great advice and will be checking my battery tabs!

I haven't had to replace the props on mine yet. I think I will use a torque screw driver where you can set the torque. Any idea how many Nm? Of course they are too bulky to keep in the carry case so maybe a decent quality compact one (something the same size as the one DJI gives) would be good to get to keep in the carry case for field use as well.

    Hi Russ,
I have issues only with my extended flight batteries, one of them only has 7 flights and the other 9x . On one of the batteries the clip completely broke right at the point where it flexes the other is hanging on by a threat. Both batteries are form the same batch only one digit apart in serial number so clearly a batch issue. Reason for my observation is the fact that my regular battery has absolutely no problem. I am traveling but the moment I am back in the USA I will get this fixed with DJI. Thanks for asking by the way because DJI has a issue. The peek material probably has some impurities.

Have 3 batts, two of them extended range ones, they both lost a tab. Think it happened when packed in the charger and in a bag. That lack of movement somehow can make them crack if something pushes on them maybe. They still fit secure with 1 tab.

I've formatted my cards in my Nikon D500, and on my PC. Zero issues with compatibility on the mini 3 pro. Sure, it's possible to format in a way that the drone won't recognize, but if you read the drone manual and understand how it stores data, this is not really an issue (and i never changed any default setting). I'm an IT nerd, though, so maybe it seems simple to me.
But OMG, I did need to replace the props after a tree "close approach". The damn DJI screwdriver stripped the first screw in an instant! Not fun.
Side sensors are turned OFF during master shots- ike orbit!

Concerning the batteries: a couple of days ago I noticed the lack of the “click” when installing the battery into the drone. Upon inspection I noticed that one tab had become very flimsy and there was a crack in it. That battery (249gram) would not stay seated. I checked all of my other batteries and noticed that one extended range lacked the click but would not easily slide out of the battery compartment in the drone. I’m wondering if this is a warranty issue? The batteries still hold charge, but you run the risk of it losing power while flying.

Yes the cracked tabs are a warranty issue but do not try to fix the tabs with glue. DJI will not provide warranty service for batteries that have been “altered”. I read it on the DJI forum.

The reason you want to format in your drone is because your drone is creating specific folders and a partition structure and using whichever file system it uses, whereas most utilities will format with a different file system like FAT32, that used to be the most interoperable one, but almost nothing uses it any longer. In theory you could format it with your computer, if the utility you use does the same thing the drone software utility does in terms of the file system, if using the right FS and partitions then any folders it needs should be able to be created by the drone software. But you may as well format in the drone, why not?

If you charge from the USB A of the battery pack, will it pull from just one battery, or from all three? I suppose you could pull 2 of the batteries to keep them fully charged. Blu Tack will work to keep a screw on the screwdriver to keep from losing them, or to stick it thru the prop to attach. (Others have said that the screws don't stick to magnetic, however, I have not tried it yet.) SD cards of any size are not that expensive anymore. I have two drones and a Go Pro, and I keep two 64 GB cards in all three of my cases. I do use 128GB in my drones and camera but still download the new content every chance I get just to insure I don't lose a lot of data.
