When you add lye to water, then add that to oil, it goes through a chemical reaction and changes the oil or grease into soap. In certain environments, archeologists have found bodies in bogs from hundreds of years ago, and the fat on the bodies had actually turned the humans into soap. You can make lye by running water through burned wood ashes or having burned wood ashes in water sitting.
