Why Did I Buy This Knife? - Gerber Assert Review

- I rarely do knife reviews on this channel but the Gerber Assert is a different edc. It is not worth the $175 that Gerber has priced it at. More like $99 because of the poor factory edge. Check out my thoughts.

Hogue is killing it with their US knives, no Fluffer 😂The deka and the Ritter RSK (Knifeworks exclusive) are dollar for dollar really hard to beat. Doug Ritter is a staunch advocate for knife rights as well, trying to fight the good fight. Gerber knives have only been disappointing for too long, they get no more of my money.
@destro6971 I just recently picked up a Ritter RSK in Magnacut and the quality and price point are unbeatable for sure.
Agree 100%!!!!
The Hogue Deka is a good alternative to the Benchmade Bugout.
It sounds like the pivot on the Gerber Assert should be adjusted. It's something that should be done on the production line. There is a BladeHQ video of a visit to Hogue's production facility, and you can see how they test each knife that's been assembled.
Thanks for more great content.
I would have said that we already have a Benchmade Bugout killer in the form of the Kaiser Drop Bear.
I was looking at buying a Bugout but wasn't paying the Benchmade tax. The Drop Bear is half the price and better - or the Bugout is the fluffer for the Drop Bear.
I feel you. I’ve got a similar relationship with Gerber products that goes back to the my USMC days and the 70s. All personal purchase as all the Corps issued was the demolition knife. I have 4 or 5 Gerber products that I carried and used over the years that are now sought by collectors. I’ve got a custom Sedulo coming as I’m in a cycle of EDC upgrade. I hope I’m as happy with it as the reviews have lead me to believe. I have recently picked up a couple Gerber, and Kershaw, in my quest for that right knife. I’m not disappointed in my overseas made Gerbers and Kershaw, but still looking for the one. I looked at the Assert, but it just didn’t look like what I want as much as the Sedulo.
Been watching CZcams knife reviews for years , too many.
This is arguably the best review Ive seen to date. Also just the video quality it's professional grade . Thanks ! God Bless, be safe , Doug
Thanks much!
That's disappointing, mine is coming soon, and I have $20 knives with far far better action
"60% of the time it works...100% of the time" I was rolling. This is one of my favorite videos of yours.. have you tried the Deka yet??
Lol thanks. Yup, I own several Dekas. They're definitely for the tactical bros
I don't get any tactical vibes from the Deka.
Would loosening the pivot screw help?
“Fluff that”. Thanks for the honest review. I appreciate you separating yourself from your money so that i (and probably a few others) wont. I really enjoy your content. Please keep em coming.
Thank you for the honest review and for saving me money! 😄
I found a budget Bugout in the form of the Böker Plus _Kihon_ in D2. They did the heat treat properly on mine. Anothwr runner up would be the Vosteed _Raccoon,_ and you get two blade shape choices.
I like their multi tools and the knives are so so… I’ve found my sweet spot with pocket knives now for price and quality… anything from a Camillus to a Kershaw clash works perfectly for my everyday uses right now… I do love the much more expensive pocket knives just got a habit of babying something I paid a lot of money for…FLUFFER!
What EDC Knife would you recommend for both left and right handed for $150 or less.
Kizer Drop Bear( moreover, there are dozens of options with Kizer), Houge Deka,CIVIVI Vision FG, I'd also look at some compression lock Spyderco's (function > beauty). Tbh, There's so many great options these days in that $ range however, I would stay away from an over price benchmade or Gerber
Love my Bugouts, but always looking for something that can beat the price, weight, etc. Thanks for the review, good to know stuff. Fluffer!!!!
Fluffier! Thanks for the review and advice.
Fluffer. I, too, thought this might be the bugout killer. Heck I almost bought one to try out. So thanks for the review and saving me money.
My Bugout had a ruff deployment out of the box, people told me to play with it to brake it down, I did, until I dropped it on my floor tiles and chip the blade 😅 so I ordered a Worksharp Precision Adjust sistem to fix the blade 😊 anyway I fixed the blade and carry the knife until it became one of my favorites 😀 but I do like the Gerber's multitools , Suspension NXT is great for EDC 😊
Guns, gear, cigars, coffee, and Texas? Instant subscribe 😎
I'm carrying one for review now, and I actually really like it. I adjusted the thumb studs all the way back and loosened the pivot screw just a smidgen and the action is pretty good. Maybe you got a dud? Bummer. I'm pretty hyped on it.
I’m very pleased with the Sedulo and it is $55 less expensive.
I was able to buy a TRM Shadow, my first cross bar lock knife. It’s silky smooth, locks up solid, beautifully done. It’s not a budget knife, I saved a long time to afford one and then was lucky to be able to buy it when they dropped.
You deserve to own one, I know you’d love it. Maybe TRM can hook you up.
I have the TRM Atom. I need to check that one out too
@@MarineXI have a Neutron and an Atom. They are gems, the Shadow is even better.
"Gerber, I don't know what to expect from your knives." ~ Wow! So, so true. They should really sit down and weigh that for the decisions they make in the future. ---Fluffer----
I have given up on Gerber. When they want to hide what the blade is made of on some knifes. When you have to question a company product as much as Gerber then I will look other places.
That failed flick made me sad 😂 I’ve only ever purchased one Gerber tool and it was the shard. I don’t see them as a household knife brand, just multi tools.
I've got the Buck 112 Slim Pro TRX and it really the same kind of knife. With the S30V blade, but I've paid 99$ + Txs and shipping on Blade HD. So a lot less cash. This one is nice but pricey. As you mentionned. But I'm shock that the sharpening was not good. From Gerber, at that price... S30V is pretty tough to sharpen ourselves.... It's a big fail.
Yo brotha try the new gerber scout it’s pretty good for price with great action . It’s only 60$
I also have had a long rocky relationship with Gerber going back almost 30 years and am disappointed time and time again. Thank you for warning me about this fluffer so I don't get jilted again. I do have a Strongarm which lures me into thinking they are improving but then ..this. To think it is more expensive than a Magnacut Hogue Deka..ouch!
appreciate the video. was considering picking one of these up. But that inconsistency in the opening would drive me crazy. Nothing like looking like a complete Noob having your knife fail to 1 hand open. At that price point. I'd expect better.
Fluffer just to show love. Great vid X
A bit of a bummer really. I love my Gerber multi tools and i also have another of their pocket knives that has good action considering how cheap the price was. I'm not concerned about the weight considering the Benchmade freak is my favorite pocket knife but a knife with bad action is a definite deal breaker especially when you're asking Benchmade prices. So I'll just continue being a Benchmade sheep for now and pass on this fluffer. As always thanks for the incite as it's very much appreciated and keep on keeping it real.
In the 80’s Gerber we’re good knives and I have some of them. Then Fiskars bought them and they went south real fast after that. Don’t know if they still own them or not now.
You know, I've been torn at getting this knife because the last time I ordered a custom Gerber Savvy knife -which has held up very well, the tasering job Gerber completely screwed and absolutely no one on their customer service team even bothered to look into it or tried to help.
Fluffer. I have benchmades and a civivi imperium. I paid 80 for the imperium, has never failed
I think of Gerber, these days, as the “Glock” of the knife world. Unfortunately they went down hill about 10-15 years ago, especially when they had Edward Michael "Bear" Grylls as a spokesman. That was their gas station style assisted opening trash. But now Bear went back to eating meat at the same time, ironically, Gerber started making decent stuff again. Yea so like glocks you need to take it apart and clean out the anti corrosion film that clogs up all the moving parts and then you have a real winner. There’s nothing wrong with the assert. And some of us don’t want to give benchmade money because they like to cut up and destroy perfectly good guns. That being said Iv purchased the osborne 940, a serum, and my personal favorite the griptilian back in the good days. I recently lost my griptilian and that thing has been on my side for the past 8 to 10 years for work every day. I always said if I lost it I wouldn’t buy another because of benchmade. I wouldn’t use the assert for the kind of work I do because I’m very hard on my work knives. But it is a great lightweight edc knife. Also no offense or anything but your flick looks all janky. Maybe it’s too small of a knife for your hand because you couldn’t really get the benchmade to flick right either. Anyway I’m very happy benchmade’s patent went out on the axis lock because I do love that quick unlock and close.
"Fluffer" Gerber tries so hard to follow the trend but because it choses to cut every corner it can, the "Star" becomes a "o".
Don't get me wrong, I love Gerber for all of the multi-tools I went through and still abuse from the Army and I have a different model of an automatic I was issued.
I would gladly purchase a Gerber knife such as this if it at least was comparable to what they were trying to copy.
I have heard videos testimony and spoken to another I know who bought this knife and frankly he told me that they see little difference between it and a gas station clone of the bugout.
Price point ruins it. Since It’s not a big heavy duty knife, putting bearings in there to make it fidget friendly would have been the better choice. Making a knife with effortless smooth action that could drop shut, is something that makes a knife feel premium. Really disappointing because aesthetically it looks pretty cool.
I kinda refuse to spend over $100 on a Ferber….but damned if I don’t want one
This intro was 🔥
Thanks brother
Since I rarely do knife reviews I figure I'll spunk it up
Make your own Turkish coffee (in an ibrik) 🙂 You won't regret it.
As for Gerber, for me it is an absolute no-no.
Is everyone's action that bad or does he just need to untighten the pivot? Probably why it's not depleying.
I live in the sub-$100 range for most of my knives, and Gerber is the worst between Gerber, Kershaw, and Schrade for consistent quality. They all feel like they're about 10 years behind newer Chinese and American companies for build quality and materials. I have a couple of Gerbers with awful pivots, awful locks, and REALLY awful grind lines. The Gerber Quadrant is one of the worst knives I've ever handled. If they'd get caught up with the rest of the industry any of those three could dominate the market that I'm in.
Fluffer… I will definitely keep my bugouts I have the work sharp bug out in 20 CV and the original bugout with Titanium Scales.
Fluffer hahaha!! Man, I gave up on Gerber awhile ago…they just can’t seem to pull it all together!! They have some really cool multitools buuuuut their quality is ALWAYS sub par,,,,and typically the materials aren’t very exciting when compared to the price. Too many better options out there!
I totally agree, I want Gerber to be good, but everything Ive handled as of late just misses the mark. I agree with the other guys, Hogue is killing it. For the same price you can get a Ritter hogue in magnacut. No contest. Fluffer. 🤣🤣
Quick-flip opening not happening with your Gerber? Try loosening the pivot screw just a little. Voila! Problem solved.
I'm a fan of their multi-tools (but I'd rather have a leatherman on my belt), but not a big fan of their knives. Rather get a Benchmade or OKC.
It is a fluffer for that price. I was hoping for a good review to compete with the Benchmade. I guess it is not even close.
Fluffer, LOL. I have not been a big fan of Gerber for some years, but was willing to give their nicer stuff a chance, but not so much now...
I carried a Gerber in the Corps too back in like 2004. It’s REALLY unfortunate because they can and they have made quality pieces especially their older stuff… but now it seems they are content making gimmicky garbage that people buy and never use or throw away. How they stay in business is beyond me. I live in Portland, I want to love gerber and some of their designs are pretty great, like the armbar slim… if they put any kind of effort into that it could’ve been an incredible tool but some of the design choices like the junk metal blade and the fact that some of the tools don’t even lock… I wish they’d either shit or get off the pot. It’s embarrassing.
I bought the fastball its great
Gerber is directly taking a shot at Benchmade with this knife but at that price might as well get a benchmade. Unfortunately Fluffer.
A lot of people say they like carrying it and it's a good knife, and all this stuff which is good. But I refuse to pay $200 for 3 inches of s30v steel and plastic scales. I can legitimately buy a plethora of knives with s30v steel for $200 that are way more impressive than this knife. I had to pass on this one. How is that 06 Auto you have a beast of a knife. It's big and heavy also s30v steel. And the Assert is the same price and this little dainty 6 inch folding knife. 🤔🤔🤔
Well 06 auto dawg that and the thick fixed blade those two and multi tools that’s it …… and if you don’t know now you know
For the price is definitely a fluffer. And I say that as someone who doesn't even really like Benchmade. Would have been a good knife in the under $100 price range
That thing looks nice but that price...
apparently this knife has a very bad lock, watching the video of how it is opened is just a pain
Fluffer EDC all day brother 💯😎
Kershaw iridium is better than the bugout with only D2 and it's also only $60, the bugout is all junk except for the blade itself, deffinately not worth $200
HOW many knives do u need Just get one with good retention one with good sharpenability etc
Yup that's a fluffer my bud
FLUFFER !!!!!!! I just got a free one today and already broke it at work opening boxes !!!!!!! Luckily I didn't buy and work did !!!!!!
Fluffer gonna fluff
Fluffer, fluffer, fluffer!! Too bad - it seemed to have a chance to really be a challenger...
FYI gerber stands for Great Engineering Really Bad Execution. This bugout fluffer is proof of that. Let's hear the butterfly haters rage on this huge miss.
Such a shame this knife is a FLUFFER after everything is said & done. 😢
Fluffer fo sho!!😅 The knife of course!🤭
Gerber has been a disappointment for years I have a few Gerber that are give or take 20 yrs old they are good knives. Not now they are not so good.
Gerber knives have let me down so much... definitely a fluffer at the very best... wouldn't waste my money.
Fluffer for sure.
gerbers should be 75$ and below this is 100% fluffer
Spyderco gives veterans a 50% discount from retail.
Thanks for the content….fluffer
Definite fluffer.
Waaaayy too expensive
No value there for the price. I can go to my local Bridgeport equipment and buy a Benchmade bugout for $110 for mini and $120 for the full size. Just bought a Hogue deka in magnacut for $125. That’s the price I paid for my PM2 with cruwear which is an amazing knife.
What a fluffer indeed.
Gerber is GERBAGE if you pick the cheaper steel knives; at least new ones are not Gerbage
Fluffer 😂
Lol fluffer
Fluffer!!
fluffer
Fluffer
Fluffer.
Dude, why not just adjust the action to your liking? We sharpen our knives right? Quit bitching and adjust it.
Shouldn’t have to do all that to a knife out of the box. Especially after carrying it for a few weeks. But do you brother
Never buying another Benchmade.
Hogue, man. If you haven’t given them a try yet, highly recommend. The Deka is a bug out killer, the Ritter RSK is awesome if you like that griptillian size. US made, no butterfly tax. 🤘🏼
It doesn't matter how good a knife it is, if it isn't 3.5 inches or better, not interested!
Lol, gerber thinking they are going to compete with Benchmade. Yea right.
Fluffer!!!
