      Can usually get it at the local store, 5 cans for $5; a bit more than the 14¢ per serving shown in the video, but still pretty inexpensive compared to "fast food" places. Damned sandwich alone close to $5.

      @@jamesslick4790 Lol! My dad used to buy those big cans of Ravioli and Spaghett w/meatballs, when I was a kid, back in the 70's and early 80's. There was something about that flavor.
      Dumping a can into a pot and heating it up was simple enough. The hardest part was using a can opener to open one. They didn't have the easy-open flip lid like they do now. I can't imagine eating that stuff, today, though. I'd rather make my own.

    This video is really close to home. In the '60s, my grandparents lived about two blocks from the Milton Plant and my mother worked there for 35 years. I still have friends and relatives who are still employed there. I remember as a kid towards the end of summer vacation when 'tomato season' (as the locals called it) started. The town was very active with the tomato trucks which was purchased from local farmers constantly coming through town and stored just a few blocks away The country side was acres and acres of tomato fields waiting for harvest to be shipped to the plant. American Home Foods sold it years ago and it was purchased by an investment firm. Shortly after that, the local purchasing of tomatoes ceased and were shipped in from California. The recipes have been changed several times. I was hoping the throw-back versions would catch on but I could never find it locally. With automation, the plant now employs about 1,000 people. I never personally worked there but I still have a lot of fantastic memories associated with it. Recollection Road is one of the most enjoyable pages on YT and I also look forward to the newest video.

    • @greyeaglem
      @greyeaglem Před 3 lety +7

      Stupid to pay to ship tomatoes across the country when they could grow them withing a few miles of the plant. Especially since the brand recipe hinged on a certain type of tomato. I found the throwback version at Walmart. They were better than what they make now, but probably not as good as in the '60s. My mom made very plain goulash, just hamburger, macaroni, onion, celery and her home canned tomatoes. It was the best, and I can't make mine taste like hers did because I have to use canned tomatoes from the store. When something has simple and few ingredients, you really can't change anything and expect the same result.

      That goulash that your mother made, that sounds exactly like beefaroni. My mother made the same thing that I can still remember from my earliest memories in the early to mid 70s right up until... well, whenever she didn't make it anymore lol. She always had to use canned tomatoes too. I remember liking it a lot when I was younger to not really disliking it or anything, but having to really be in the mood for it. One of my favorites that she made was chili. That and macaroni and cheese. I'm not really a fan of baked mac & cheese, but hers was bad ass lol. Sometimes to be a little different she used some kind of lightly spiced finely ground bread crumbs to top it while it was baking. She does a from scratch cheesecake and graham cracker crust that is out of this world. Looking back, aside from some ingredients that had to be processed anymore, like cheeses or tomato paste, I really can't think of any meals coming from a box or a can or frozen. She put a lot of time and effort into dinners. Lol... We were asked exactly once what we thought we might like for dinner tomorrow, and if we didn't come up with it by bedtime, she made whatever she felt like making and if we didn't like it... tough... starve because you aren't getting anything else!

    • @greyeaglem
      @greyeaglem Před 3 lety +2

      @@sped6954 The only time we were asked what we wanted for supper was if it was our birthday. We almost always chose spaghetti. Her mac & cheese was also the best. Can't give exact amounts, but I'm pretty sure the sauce was equal parts Velveeta and whole milk melted together in a sauce pan. I would say 1 cup each for 1lb. macaroni (raw) that was mixed with the cooked macaroni, poured into a Pyrex casserole dish and baked. The goulash I was the same about. Didn't get excited over it, but didn't mind it. However, our neighbor who lived behind us thought it was the greatest thing ever. My aunt always said my mom should bottle and sell her spaghetti sauce. I had made it too when I lived at home, and always thought it was the Better Homes and Gardens recipe. But looking through the book, I noticed it called for shredded carrots. When I was in culinary school, the recipe we used called for carrots and that was the first time I heard of that, so I don't think it was a matter of we just left it out. Therefore, I don't know what recipe she used. What I do know is it called for tomato paste and only tomato paste. I think garlic and oregano were the only other things in it other than salt and pepper when you browned the meat. I was also telling people today about how pizza in our house was a Jeno's pizza box mix topped with cooked hamburger or sausage (usually both) onions, mushrooms, etc. These would be made on large cookie sheets as we had a big family. It all sounds OK so far, but here's the kicker. She would top it with Velveeta! Sounds ridiculous now, but it was actually really good. I would love to have a piece of it now. You had to eat that pizza with a fork. No way were you picking it up! Sometimes I really wish I could go back and have those things again. Hope you have a great weekend!

    Chef Boyardee was a prime example of achiving The American Dream. He came to this country and worked hard. And made his dreams come true. And he lived one great life. Rest in Peace good sir. I have been eating Chef Boyardee foods since childhood. And still do to this day.

I used to love it! Very interesting that I input this comment via voice and when I said boyardee, Google spelled it perfectly. This channel is so good! I was 17yo and I budgeted for everything, unfortunately I forgot about eating! Seriously, when Key-food’s or the A&P’s had them on “Sale”... I was able to buy 10 or 12 cans for only $2.00! When I started bringing them to work and my boss saw me eating them out of the can cold... He gave me a raise! I am proud to live just outside Milton, PA where the Boiardi (the real spelling) Family lived. I attend Mass in the same Church where they did. You still see their name on things they donated.
    To my knowledge they were good people looking to do good and help others.
    To this day, the huge Plant (referred to by us locals as “Chef,” as in “working at Chef”), at the South end of town, still makes all the Chef-Boy-Ar-Dee products. Although tomatoes (which are still massively grown here and originally brought the Plant here) are now from other places. Every September was the “Tomato Harvest Festival” with a huge town Spaghetti Dinner. It’s now the “Harvest Festival.”
    The Plant was sold out of the Family many decades ago, becoming first American (then International) Home Foods; around 2000, it became part of the conglomerate Con-Agra.
