He was/is probably my #1 guitar hero, I picked up a lot of what im trying to play from his Homespun lesson and now i find everything I can thats been preserved..But somehow i missed it that he had passed until around Christmas of '22..R.I.P. one of the alltime greats..fantastic player! Also a very interesting fellow.
RIP Thom. A true master and a gentleman
I love Tom Bresh, so down to earth and honestly humble
Someday all paths to Travis will be gone and these AWESOME little tidbits will cease...SALUTE TO Mr. Bresh...The true Guitar master's
I went to high school with this guy. He had a trio with Rusty Rutledge on drums, Tom Mitchel on Bass and himself (Thom Bresh) on guitar. It is impossible to describe how good they were. With three players they produced the most perfect sound I think I ever heard.
RIPS Thom, thanks for your great musics.
This is the kinda fella that'll cook you grits before giving you a guitar lesson.
Tom was a great teacher too. Always phenomenal to watch him play. smoke smoke smoke was a riot, I loved it. Talented man. RIP
One of the best fingerstyle guitarists alive. Love from Israel.
I would love to spend time with this consummate musician. Amazing
Thom just makes it look so easy
What l love about this whole style is the melody and the powerful base combine perfectly. It's probably impossible to improve on it, especially the chord progressions. The debt us pickers owe these guys is beyond calculation. Thanks gentlemen.
I reckon he's a brilliant bloke and a superb picker. Those Travis chords are the way l think because they simplify more complex forms of the same chord. Merle was probably the first great guitar thinker and Thom just follows his path.
Tons of great stuff in this short lesson.
Best way to really understand Thom and Merles style is the dvd from homespun tapes that Thom did few years back it has some real travis picking classics fully explained by Thom and includes tab booklet..especially the cannonball rag.🙂
Genius and generosity
Yes , A generous man .
Love your stories and your playing “Mott”
the guitar is a repository of the entire cultural history of the us, in every country the guitar is a living evolving historical and cultural record in the vernacular an amazing thing
Great stuff! Thanks for posting, Thom.
Oh man; okay I get it; this guy does the real stuff and knew the real Travis! Any other fingerpickers out there for many years, come by here and chuckle out loud? About one of very few ill look into to pay to play...
This is great, thanks for sharing. I love Travis picking.
Short but very interesting!
I appreciate this so much! So much roots and story how guitar playing was played. Even your guitar looked like Travis's guitar. Awesome!
Very helpful - thanks a lot Thom! Youre number one!
RIP Thom 🙏
Great video! Great visual formatting.
Thanks, Thom, great video!
Cool stuff from Thom.
RIP Thom
Great guy, met him at CAAS in 2018. I just wonder how long it took him to stretch that thumb over. My hands are kind of small and it is a bit of a challenge without getting tired.
I have small hands so the thumb thing is near impossible . So I work around it the best I can. I wonder if they can surgically add an extension to my wittle tumb.
I use my thumb all the time on the 6th string. Then I saw that Merle was getting the 5th string also perfectly and and easily with it! I just realized today that I can do that by keeping my wrist pretty straight and raising my elbow (to the back, like if you were cocking back a coal shovel left handed). He didn't need to do that whatsoever. And it looks a touch funky, but if you want some of those chords might be worth a try.
this first lick that he plays, is it a travis song? or just something he used to play? id really like to either hear a whole version, or see the chords cause its a beautiful few seconds (1:13)
A lot of valuable information do you have a website where you show those chords As a visual church somewhere we can download those wonderful cords you’re making
I wish you would explain the type of actual stands or Travis picking you’re using with your right hand or do you do a variety of different Travis Pickett? First can you see ya with the thumb 6464 than 5462 are use your name the strings as numbers
BOOM chic!
I like Tom
thanks for another great lesson Thom, keep um comin! ps, can you send me one of those bixby guitars? , it dosn't have to be fancy like the one in this vid
Do you have a DVD out will you teach teach this stuff much slower and show the court diagrams
Do you have lessons teaching Travis picking
❤️️❤️️
Is 2:42 ‘9 pound hammer’?
I would love to place my thumb over the top. Unfortunately, my hands are small...
I’m having trouble with the B9 chord
1:39 is an A9 chord
Nice chords do you have a website where we can go to and see the cord diagrams because your going much too quick for us
What guitar is that never seen that headstock before
bigsby neck
@@tag3434 THANKS A BUNCH ! I've only been able to find Bigsby electric guitars online but not acoustics
Yeah, it didn't start with Fender electrics. The Bigsby head stock was fitted to a Martin D-28 herringbone for Merle Travis, apparently having a good effect with the sustain of the higher notes. Thom has Travis's original Martin, and at least one replica was made for Thom (probably so that it could go on tour without utter paranoia while the herringbone stays at home in the studio).
The decal must be worn in spots on that headstock. I couldn't wrap my head around it saying "Bigsby," but I worked it out with photoshop, and it probably does say Bigsby, if it has been worn down with age.
@@LJC68 thanks
Are those your fingernails or do you have some fake ones added on
Wasn't the idea of not using the thumb over that you have more agility in the other fingers. Win some lose some?
He has lost some weight here and you can see how large his hands were. I wear xxl. gloves. His thumb looks to be an inch longer than mine.
What type of fingernails do you have on or don’t tell me those are your own
Do you have off full length actual DVD out a Travis picky I saw your courses but the only one is the same one as this video you’re going much too fast and not really slowing down to explain the right hand
Homespun music has a fine DVD tutorial by this guy
Too short to fast. Would like to hear this at a slower pace and explain more in detail how to make the cords and what the right hand is doing the traverse picking pattern anyone else
This is a Truefire lesson. Simply goto the site and the entire course complete with tabs is there
Is Travis your father I thought I heard you were someone say that he was your father I could be mistaken you’re not calling him dad but some people call their dad by their first name
Thumbs down come from basement dwellers who need their mamas’
help to string a guitar.
So to be great guitarist im getting the impression your first name has to be Tom....?
Your old ax needs some work.i hear buzzing all over the place .I enjoyed the lesson, I've been playing the way Travis used to all my life . Never thought nothing of it..now I realize it was a style..
I just goes to show not everyone who plays great can be a great teacher
