    My first race was in Atlanta that March. A buddy of mine took me. When I heard, saw and yes, even smelled those cars running, I was hooked. I was a junior in high school. Alan Kulwicki won the pole in an unsponsored car, and I was a fan of his until his untimely death in April of 93. These were great times in NASCAR.

    Zerex left Alan Kulwicki's team at the end of the 1990 season, and Hooter's wouldn't come on board until Atlanta in 1991, hence the Army car...The other military cars were Buddy Baker (Marines), Greg Sacks (Navy, in a 4th Rick Hendrick car) Mickey Gibbs (Air Force), and Dave Marcis (Coast Guard)

    • @MatthewLewisAtlanta
      @MatthewLewisAtlanta Před 4 lety +1

      Sacks car was not a Hendrick car. Sacks owned the car himself along with Gary Bechtol's Diamond Ridge Racing and had pit crew help from Hendrick. Sacks lost his ride with Hendrick along with the SlimFast sponsorship after he got a DUI at the end of the 1990 season.

    Every time I see Dave Allison’s mom, she is always kinda “tough,” on her son. In his first start, she was asked who she was rooting for, she straight up sided with Bobby, unfazed. Then in this race, she first said she’s proud of Hut!?! I get that’s Bobby’s driver, but really? She only says she’s proud of Dave after bringing up Hut.
    Edit: Dave supposed to be Davey obviously. iPhone autocorrect of course!

Even though Earnhardt didn't get the win he got to finish and he got to finish fifth. Which is sweet while MR selfish Loser boy had a DNF

    Richard Petty looped his car on purpose to try and give his son a chance to win. Waltrip should have won this race

    Good lord, those pit road rules are absurd. It's silly that they even had to try them out before just saying "hey you know, maybe a speed limit on pit road would do the job" a couple months later. Sometimes the simplest solution is the best one.

    I got a good feeling about these new pit rules. Really simple.
    Yeah, my sarcasm is at 1000. It was a knee jerk reacrion that required a math degree to understand.

      @MartenFerret Před 7 lety +6

      WIKI: In a March 2016 "Where Are They Now?" article with (site), Stricklin mentioned that he recently went to work for an old friend at Stock Car Steel in Mooresville, NC. He also mentioned that one of his biggest missed opportunities was when he chose not to take an offer to drive for Joe Gibbs' new Winston Cup Series team in 1992.

      @@Viper8828 Gotta remember, at the time Joe Gibbs was an NFL coach coming off a Super Bowl win wanting to get into racing. Most people didn't think he'd come in and be real competitive anytime soon and a lot of people thought he was in over his head and just getting into NASCAR as a hobby.

      Two wins so far.
      JGR only had a very small amount of wins till they switched to Pontiac they started gaining steam in late 90s into 2000s.
      23XL will catch up to Trackhouse.

    Maybe the most boringest race in televised nascar history, but still an important one, and a fascinating broadcast to listen to (at least the live feed). it was clear after 1990 that pit stops needed to be regulated in some way. but this clearly wasn't the way.
