What are your best decluttering tips? And does anyone else watch decluttering-themed videos to get hyped up before tackling clutter? I always do!
I still do your tip of reversed psychology, choosing the only things I can’t live without and then re-evaluating all what’s left. Also deep looking into the visible clutter that I got used to and manage them.
I actually watch the documentary Hoarders on A&E. First, if you have too many things, you must seek professional help. Second, it allows me to look at my space and decide if I really need something. Third, quarantine has given me time to really think about what I actually don’t need. Fourth, if you need to save money or need extra cash, don’t buy anything and sell things online for extra cash.
My rule is if I haven’t used it or worn it within the last 6 months, it’s not staying in the house (obviously within reason or seasons for things like clothing or other miscellaneous seasonal items).
Hi Alison, thanks for another awesome video! I am not unsure if you are aware but it’s also possible to recycle items which are no longer being used to reduce landfill e.g. old or torn clothes at H&M
I like to do little 4 -5 days trips, work remotely if I need to, and only pack what I need, then everything that is left behind back home is negotiable to be declutter. In order to make the negotiation more stream line I will target whatever I will never bring on a trip.
I listen to a podcast every morning and it’s about 15 minutes long. Thus every morning while the podcast is on, I start cleaning and once it’s done, I stop. Because I do this daily, my apartment stays clean!!! I would highly recommend this
I love that idea!!
@@rach6492 I am wondering the same!
I do that too! And while I wait for the water to boil to make coffee, I’ll clean the kitchen counter and put away dried dishes. NPR has news updates that I really enjoy, just to keep up with things.
@@rach6492 i'd love to know too !
I would love to know too :)
I'm loving all the content lately, Allison! Keep it coming please! :D
This video hit differently. It's like after watching a zillion minimalism videos on CZcams, something finally 🌟"clicked" 🌟 The way you spoke about your 'highlights' literally brought tears to my eyes. I've favorited this video and so I can always come back to it to recenter myself on my minimalism journey. Its comprehensive while being succinct and so, so genuine. Thank you Allison 💛💛
Yes! This video hit differently for me too. I loved the points she made. Like first stating WHY you want to declutter. I’m naturally a slob, and have always been fine with it. But in reality, my mind just functions better when things are tidy! It’s hard battling against your natural self.
I also LOVE the whole “first pick out things you can’t live without.” Normally I’ll just go through my closet, drawers, etc. and I don’t usually give much away! But I’m definitely going to start using this method!
I've stored this video in a playlist I named "Outstanding" so I can refer back to it easily as well. First video I've seen about minimizing and decluttering that comes from the very positive perspective of what you want your home and life to look like.
I feel that. Same exactly for me. This is the first video of Allison’s that I’ve ever seen and MAN does it feel like she is talking directly to me. I subscribed and saved this to my favorites as well. Watching it for the second time already. 😅
To me the goal is two fold:
1) I'm naturally disorganized and it's an immense challenging to keep things tidy. Having fewer things does automatically ease the pain.
2) I'm planning to move to a cheaper & smaller apartment in the next year so I will have even less of storage space. Decluttering will make this possible and allow me to save on housing costs and have more cash leftover for everything else.
Thredup is a great way to be able to get rid of stuff when you declutter! They make it really easy to just throw your stuff in a box and have usps pick up and can even donate what they dont end up using! Just thought I'd share in case anyone was interested! :)
Yes!! I use it all the time. So great!
This is actually a very intelligent and very well thought out video. I can see and understand the psychology behind everything she is saying. She’s put into understandable words the things I’ve been thinking or have been trying to wrap my mind around. Love this video! I was also laughing at myself throughout watching this because she hit it on the head with everything she said and the accuracy is spot on!
I've watched a LOT of decluttering videos over the last few months, preparing for a move, and this was probably the most helpful! Realizing the things you have at the time of a great memory are never actually important to the memory is so true, and it's so handy to have that articulated.
Actually I love the idea of taking out what you love and get rid of the rest. I’ll be trying that today.
Pull what you love. Everything else is negotiable! WOW!!! Thanks, Allison!
Theres so many decluttering videos on YT, but I think this is one of the only ones I've actually took away multiple pieces of valuable advice. Take out what you love, why didnt I think of that! Its so true. Thank you, love this channel. I'm new here by a few months but you have quickly become one of my favourites
Minimalism is something very near and dear to me and it’s not about having only so many items in your home it’s having only the things you absolutely love in your home. If decluttering stresses you out then just get rid of one thing a day. Over time things will clear out that doesn’t work for everyone but it’s a slow process to get started :)
I needed this as a kick in the butt to continue decluttering. I have come a long, long way but I have a long way to go!
Love. Minimalist. Content. I’m most interested in a capsulized wardrobe video, even if you aren’t at an extreme 30 items only or something...I’d love to see your process behind it.💛
GIRL your videos are literally overhauling my life. Keep it up! 💕
Your videos are so helpful and informative! Thank you for the hard work you put into them. :) I recently discovered your channel and have been so inspired to plan a solo travel trip. I hope you have a great rest of your week!
Love these types of videos you've been making Allison!
4:25 tip about the multiples that are spread out is SO true!
Allison!!! I’m loving these videos so much! You are amazing
I start new year decluttering my all home. 🙏🏻
This is so helpful! I’m getting ready to do a custom closet in my bedroom and I need to declutter beforehand!
We’ve been decluttering for 2+ years and although I thought we’d done so well, selling and moving out of our home this past month (after 7 years) showed just how much unused stuff we still had that we “may need someday”. Loved the advise about remembering the highlights!
I just want to thank you again so much for you videos. I simply can relate so easily to everything you post, and really do a very big effort not to comment/follow everything you post. Cleaner, leaner simply feels like the way for me, and I see it does for you. Thanks again, I will keep working on my de cluttering!
I really benefitted from this video. And plan to use in my decluttering journey for 2022. Thank you, Allison for the helpful tips!
This has been so helpful thank you! I’ll start my decluttering journey today!!
I love your videos and I missed them when you were off YT for a while. I love the way you talk, very informative, no pauses, no thinking in between and your language is very smooth if it makes sense))). Keep up!
I like to declutter by first tackling small/insignificant tasks first before I handle the most pressing needs!! It helps me stay motivated when I finish a series of little tasks in a row
Thank you so much for this. Heading into retirement and lightening up on stuff has made more time for living rather than cleaning. I felt a bit stuck third pass through and seeing stuff crept back in and tackling sentimental items. Great to see you making more videos they are so helpful.
I really love your sit-down videos! Decluttering helped me know what I need when I go shopping. I'm also going to move in the near future so decluttering is a short cut before the actual process :D
Identifying the things you want to keep first!!! Very helpful
Love your content nowadays. So relatable ! Love from Malaysia 😍
Loving all the minimalism uploads Allison!! Keep it up!
Starting with keeping what I want is the best advice.
This is so helpful and inspiring, thank you so much for making videos like this 🤗
Thanks so much for the motivation! I've been trying to start decluttering for a few months now and I just can't seem to get started. This video has motivated me to start!!!
Love your content Alison!
You give the best logical advice that is sometimes so difficult to follow. Why do we make it so crazy to follow? Thanks so much. You're awesome. ❤😻🌸
This was so helpful, Thank you!
Very helpful video-& I’ve watched a bunch! I especially like your tip to identify the items you LOVE vs. the things to get rid of. About to subscribe.
This has been so helpful!
I LOVE your tip about focusing on what you want to keep, not what you want to get rid of!!!!! It’s genius! And so much easier than what everyone else out there is saying....I feel like this process just became so much easier, thank you!
This was the best, condensed advice for decluttering on YT for me. Need to listen to it once a day, lol.
Girl!!! You explained this perfectly!! Thank you! 🦋🌹
I love watching decluttering related videos and watch them often! (Keeping that in mind)... I thought this video was very helpful and well articulated! I think someone starting out or someone who has already been decluttering a while would find it helpful! At a minimum, it helps with thinking about things in a different way! First time I've seen a video of yours...and I really enjoyed it (obviously...lol)! 😉👏💜
Game. Changer. When I cleaned out my closet and first pulled out the clothes I love to wear and use on a regular basis. I "negotiated" with the rest and most of them were given away. It feels great!
I'm probably old enough to be your mother, so at this point in life as I work on decluttering I think about what my children would have to clean out if I were no longer here. Most of what I have they would throw out, so that mentally helps me in the process too. Someday everything in my house will no longer be here, so what can I do without today?
Great video!!
Very helpful video! ✨ thank you!
My favourite part of this video was you speaking of the highlights of your life. ❤️. And yes. I try to me no clutter. It just feels more relaxing and peaceful to me to sit down in my house and have it uncluttered.
Decluttering is my mission today hahah as if this video came out as well!! Thanks for the tips Allison!
This is a old video but such an encouraging one. I going to keep it on replay... Thank you!
Also, this is definitely your niche. You are killing it with this content!
I have no idea how you knew exactly what I needed to hear today :+) Relatively new subbie here and very much enjoying your content. From consumer to world traveler - what an awesome transition! Thanks for the boost.
Wow these tips are super helpful! Thank you so much
Yes! Decluttering videos are a favorite of mine! If you have any decluttering coming up please vlog it 🙂 I wanted to mention I sell ALL my clothes that are in good shape on Poshmark. I even sell my basics from Target, Walmart and Old Navy. So I encourage everyone to use that platform despite how much the item is worth.
Dear Allison,
I love these tips. I just started decluttering and my minimalism journey 6 months ago. It already gave me so much peace. Even my oldest son declutters and donates his toys all by himself. It gives him peace too. On the other hand, my husband has so much stuff and clothes that drive me insane. How do I manage myself to not irritate myself on these items. It is my journey, not his. He is not that into minimalism. Sorry if my language is not that good, I'm from the Netherlands.
Love, Trieneke
I love these kind of videos!
Love this video Thank you so much
I did the same exact thing to my living room and laundry room walls! You have phenomenal taste 👌
So inspiring thank you allison
Such great tips! Thank you 😊
Great video can't wait to start my wardrobe declutter 👌🤗
Can’t thank you enough for this video
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I have been on a minimal journey for almost 3 months, I have noticed continuing to declutter makes such a difference!
Hi Allison! I love your channel and have been watching for years! Can you do a wardrobe essentials video? I’m so curious on your perspective because you travel so how do you balance having those travel pieces with everyday wear while being a minimalist?
Love this!
Very well said!
Thank you!
Great video!
This is so inspiring. It's definitely a journey. This inspires me to go through things again and to collect the items I really love and keep those ❤
Great tips on picking out the favourites first... I love decluttering but I wish I could sell stuff more easily
Love these tips!! I have been having good luck with selling things on poshmark over the years, and it makes me motivated to list stuff that I may not necessarily want to de clutter “just to see if it sells.” Also, whenever I want to buy a new item, I think about whether I would want to move it the next time I have to change apartments or whether I would be ok with keeping it the next 5-10 years. That usually gets me to reevaluate my purchases!
Great ideas!
Loving the consistency of your post ❤️ I have so much stuff I want to get rid of but feel so bad how much money I’ve spent on it even though I don’t use it now . What sites have you used or would you recommend for selling items from high street like Zara, Aritzia, etc. ?
Deciding what to keep 100%. What have you used recently. Pack up what you haven't used or don't like and store away for awhile. See if you miss anything
Allison, I love the content you've been creating lately! I'd love for you to do a what I eat in a day video or something food/health related. I remember you were a vegetarian when you lived in LA so I'd be curious to see what's changed in your diet and how you maintain your health! Keep up the amazing content! :)
Just found you! Watched and subscribed💕. This channel is just what I need💐
Great ideas.
how far we've come since the makeup hoarding days!! my single makeup bag cannot even imagine that life anymore
This video really helped me. Also the fact that my closet collapsed and now I can’t put it off anymore. 😅 After not going out for the past 3 months I’ve actually saved money and realized how much I THOUGHT I needed verses what I actually need. If our lives are going to drastically change without our consent I’m going to try making it a positive change. Thanks for your help! 🥰
OOOOOOHHHHH you totally got me when you said you had piles of stuff laying around waiting for you to post it on Poshmark. I have literally bags of stuff waiting on me to post and sell. Ugh!
Perfect video!
For the past week, I have been slowly getting rid of things in my room. Because of the stay at home order and with people buying more online I have been able to make more sales than I normally would on Poshmark, Mercari, and Depop so it's nice to get rid of some things and get some money back. I was able to downsize my nail polish collection a little.
a must for me
I feel attacked 😂 the shopping to do the thing and then that’s an accomplishment is what I do with almost everything 😅
Ha! The jeans - breaking them back in - so true!
Can you do a closet tutorial? I’d love to see your minimalist closet
There's a part in the video that you mention decluttering in timely manner... and not setting stuff aside to poke around in again. I actually thinks this might help me definitively decide when I decide to donate clothes or toss stuff out but still can't "let go". What I do is I put everything that I don't think I'll need into a bag and set it aside... usually somewhere that's not as easily accessible (like the trunk of my car or on a high shelf) and then I notice that the longer that stuff sits there, I forget that I have it or want to keep it and CLEARLY I don't actually need it because I forgot about it. At that point, then I pick a date to donate it.
If I find myself wanting to wear that shirt or missing that dress then I'll make the effort to dig up and wear it again but that rarely happens. And I think this helps your mind realize that you don't really need that stuff. OH! But you also have to remember not to immediately replace what you just threw out... that would defeat the purpose.
Can you do a video on your filming setup
Hey Allison, I love your videos about this theme and your tips are useful! 7:00 is BRILLIANT, SO TRUE!!! I just want to say, we cant only keep the things we love (there are some items that are simply useful, nothing else). If I kept only the clothes I love I would remain with one or two handful. And I am not willing nor finacially able to change my whole closet. For me its ok to keep some okay-items as well also because I live in the countryside, have a dog and a garden and do enjoy wearing clothes that I dont have to be careful with;)
I miss your green wall! 😭
Can you please make a video of tips and life advice you would give to teens and those in their early 20s that are still trying to figure life out? I think your advice would be great!
This content is 💯 😳 awesome
I got stuck with a ton of family possessions that I can’t get rid of like pictures and whatever it feels like I’m seriously tied to them and if I got rid of them the future generations won’t have this family history what do I do
Allison!! Stop attacking me! 😩😅
Seriously though. Thank you for this. I feel super called out. 😅 Subscribed.
You have beautiful hair!
Everlane sweater?
Owned my house for a year next month!
love you
“the jeans that we probably should wash more but we don’t want to break them in” PREACHHHH
I’ve found a method that works for me in decluttering. I take everything to give or donate to my car and then wait a week. Sometimes, I get over zealous in decluttering because of emotional pain and I get rid of way too much. So, if I don’t want it by the end of the week, it goes. This gives my emotions time to balance again and for me to have a stable look at the items. Otherwise, I will just be re-buying it all again.
Getting rid of stuff is liberating. Sadly, I’m alone on this. My wife still collects possessions.
