Often #400m #athletes are unsure about race pace for the 400m. What time should you cover the first 200m in? This can destabilise your race because if you're unsure then its likely going to tighten you up before the race. The pace you go out at in the 400 meters really depends on the kind of athlete you are. Are you a sprinter 400m runner or more endurance based? But depending on this, the speed you should go at is about .5 to maybe even a second of your 200m personal record.
It's important that you practise this in training. 200m runs in 400m race pace is a good start so you fine tune the pace you feel you can go at and still leave a bit for the home straight.
The other useful tool is relaxation and I go over more of this in the video - Sport
Thank you for this video , I m competing in the 400m in the bucs championship this weekend
thanks
I started off fast and gave out bout at the 300m
Slower first 200 next time? And be relaxed.
Great insight, My son, Sr in HS, only second year running track just PR 51.87 but he's not having the strong kick to the finish line. One his teammates mom counts down out load when they come to the 200m mark and she saying 22 to 23 as he cross the 200m. Listening to you, that's way to fast. His PR in the 200m is 22.9. So it looks like he is running max effort for first 200m. I understand why he is crashing now. They won the conference so they will run in the Regional this Saturday. I will have him work on this in practice staying relaxed and run about 24.5 in the first 200m. He's coming from baseball were he was the fastest guy to, as a Jr, not being the fastest. He is proud of himself to have improved to make 4x400 as the first leg. His team has won the previous two 4A state championship in 4x400 and he had to beat out a couple of guys. Very competitive team. They also won the 4x200 in the conference. Thx
Thanks for the update. Let us know how that goes with the more measured first 200m.
