    Agree, disagree? I think the 50mm f1.8 or f2 for any system is the best wedding photography lens to get started with.

      Agree - I launched my career in photography in the mid 90’s with an Nikon FM2 body and Nikkor 50mm 1.8 AI-S, and had used that combo for ten years alongside my autofocus Nikon and medium format bodies until I jumped to the Canon 5d and EF mount. Since I was able to match my film stocks across brands and bodies, it was really all about the focal length and rendering of the lenses instead of the branded boxes they were mounted to, or the electronics and metering involved. 50mm pancakes are timeless for their utility and the ubiquitous 35mm format embodiment for each camera line is simple, sharp, bright and cheap. All the things a beginning photog needs but may not have a large budget for. Plus it really is the perfect focal length if you aren’t limited by space since it matches the attention focus within your natural field of view. Its crazy how often I turned to my humble Nikon when I urgently needed a reliable shot (eg where I was caught in the middle of reloading my medium backs or 35mn rolls or out of battery power, or needed the wider aperture than my 2.8 zooms). With the exposure latitude of Portra 400NC, I simply preset my mechanical shutter to 1/60 or 1/90, aperture between 2.8 and 5.6, set my rough focus on the split fresnel screen and pull the trigger. All in about a second or two from raising my camera to my eye, with zero dependence on batteries for metering, focus or motor drive, and secure in the knowledge that I got the shot. Starting with a 50 prime has shaped the way I shoot, and couldn’t imagine starting with a zoom since i would have missed out on engaging my feet, creative brain and social skills. Paired with a 16-35 zoom or a prime within that range, it may be all you need since you can usually get closer to your subjects, but may not be able to get further back.

    After 12 years and hundreds of weddings, we finally shot our first wedding with NO zooms. Just 24, 50 and 85mm primes. Dual cameras. 24 on one hand and 50/85 on the other. Of course the majority of images were made on the 50. Images are great, and so is my back.

      For a long time, I used three bodies with 24/1.8, 35/1.4 and 85/1.4. With high-rez bodies, Crop Mode also gave me 52mm and 130mm. Now I go 24/1.8, 85/1.4 or 135/1.8 and 35-150/2.0-2.8. The two-stop advantage over the 35-150 makes the 85/1.4 a must-have.

    I used to shoot entire weddings on a D700 and 50 1.4G back in like 2013. I'd always have a wider and tighter lens in my bag (my go to has been the 28, 50 (currently 58) and 85 for the last ten years. Other lenses sort of come and go, but that has been my bread and butter combo for most my career, with the 50 doing 90% of the work, sometimes 100%.

    most of my weddings require a 28 or 24 at some point, pretty much just for bridesmaids getting ready or a tight space with the whole party or family. Otherwise I do use a 50 just about the whole time. Perfect balance of natural to flattering for me. Also LR "enhance" tool has changed everything. My R6 is now 40mp lol! Don't need macro or 85 really. If you need 200mm well you still need that.

    Excellent video - way back in the day a favorite camera for wedding shooters was the Rolleiflex TLR with a fixed 80mm lens (roughly the same field of view as 50mm on a full frame camera of today) - So it is certainly possible. I haven't done any wedding photography in decades and now just shoot for my own enjoyment - but my experience even today is that keeping equipment simpler often leads to better results and less time and stress worrying about carrying around multiple lenses. Your comment regarding the close focusing capability in situations like ring shots can be helped along with either an extension tube or even a diopter. I have both for a number of my lenses and cameras and at least in terms of center sharpness I can get excellent results - the edges get very slightly softer - especially with the diopter filter (I use a +3) but whenever I am out and about shooting photos I always have at least that filter in a pocket in case I need it.

    • @TaylorJacksonPhoto
      @TaylorJacksonPhoto  Před 2 lety

    I've shot a few weddings years ago with my trusty D7000, together with the 17-50/2.8 A16N Tamron (without BiM). The AF was under all circumstances way fast enough. You don't need a 36x24mm setup DSLR or nowadays -Mirrorless (DSLM) for that. With a prime faster than F2.8, one would have more shallow DoF of course, but it was up to the task. And most FF Zooms are usually 24-70/2.8 anyway. I've the older 28-70/2.8 L and 28-70/2.8 IF ED Nikkor for those setups.

    I'm using 50mm while almost all others wedding photographers are using 35mm + 85mm. With set 24+50mm my photos are different from the most!

      This is a good move honestly. I used to use a 35/85 combo but felt like the 85 was too long and the 35 wasn’t wide enough. For the last few years I’ve been almost 100% 24/50 primes and A) they work better for my brain and the overall versatility needed on the wedding day and B) I definitely think my photos look different than most other people in my market, particularly because of the 24. Glad to meet another 24+50 fan! :)

    I am surprised most wedding photographers never mention or consider macro tubes. Seems like a cost effective solution for taking a couple of ringshots opposed to a dedicated macro lens.

    • @bobhuerbsch
      @bobhuerbsch Před 2 lety +2

      You have to be working very fast and efficient. Easier to pull a macro lens then mess with tubes when you are busy!

    This is very helpful. Some old friends are getting married next week and they've asked me to take photos. I'm really an enthusiastic amateur landscape photographer so I'm way out of depth! I thought I would stick to one lens on my Nikon Z7 and take the 24 to 200 with my old Nikon 3300 DSL as backup. Can anybody tell me if I'm heading in the right direction? Great video. Wish me luck....Many thanks!

    I shot most of my wedding swith only 50 mm ❤ Given the only other lens I own is a 35mm DX, it's only reasonable 😂
    I only use the 35mm if I really need to (not enough space to move away for the group shots). I'm looking forward to buying the 24mm sometime this summer, and with time, either he 105 or 135, but I know I will still mostly use the 50mm

      Until this past june, i only shot 35mm 1.8 DX. The reason moved to canon was video advantages and the color science on the skintone
      Otherwise i will still use it here and there.

    I shot weddings for 3 years with only the EF 35 1.4….. It really is whatever you want to do. Once you find your style game over. I just bought the R3 and the 24-105 2.8 we’ll see if this is the ultimate combo or if I run back to primes!!!!

    I think zooms are better. We all know that special moment we got at a wedding. I get more of them using zooms. The Canon RF28-70 f2 is now my go to lens with 70-200 on the other body or EF135 f2. I like the versatility because I don’t like to move around much during the ceremony. For the reception you have more freedom of movement so the fast primes are great.
