  • Process video of a drawing inspired by a Jethro Tull song, set to an unscripted ramble on my recent worries about working as an artist without using the major social media platforms.

Social media can be so exhausting. We do need better ways. Love this drawing, btw

From early days of Infancy, Through trembling years of youth, long lurking middle age, and final hours, long in the tooth. That lyric always gave me chills. Thanks for what you do Tom.

ive had that same consistent feeling as someone who has been posting their art on social media since middle school and now as a 20 year old, not only have I ditched all social medias, but I recently got a flip phone and have decided to only focus on improving my art and bettering myself. it honestly feels like a breath of fresh air, plus the phone was free and $15 to replace so more money to art supplies!

I've had similar feelings about almost all social media forever. My Facebook is essentially blank, my Tumblr I reblog maybe one thing every other week, never had a Twitter account, I comment on smaller CZcams Channels just for support.
I've been considering my options regarding my own works I want to put online - what to post, where, and how I want to go about it "marketing" them under my own ethics. It's been rough.

I love your work! I've been feeling the same for a bit too. I started my art page on socials about 2 years ago and it's been mixed. I barely use any of them much anymore, except now for Cara. Using it to share my work for now.

Thank you! I have heard mixed things about Cara, but I plan on investigating it further, just in case I feel so moved to try it out.

i just found a new passion, and it was after i deleted all my social media for the same reason being comparison of myself. currently the only source i have to promote myself is pinterest. its sad that artists nowadays have to constantly promote themselves on social media for a bit of recognition, it really does drain the love out of anything you like.
i am lucky since i live in a big city so i can try to go out and share my art, but i wish there was more options.
good luck to u though, if you keep pushing you def will land somewhere.

A rare first view sub for me. I usually wait until I've enjoyed three or more videos from a creator, but for one, I really like your style, I think I want to keep you in mind for projects I'm working on for the future, and two, you're kinda talking to me right now. I don't have a big following (and I've been embarrassingly negligent of my Patreon) but I've also been looking to get away from using social media to get my stuff out there.

First, love your illustration style. Great work. Keep it up! Second, I totally empathize with your situation… but from a different angle. I’ve been a graphic designer for over 30 years and deeply regret not utilizing social media to show off my work sooner. I consider it a necessary evil to ensure you expose your work so that people know you’re out there and what you can do. We need to be “all business” about it and NOT spend time surfing social media. Let that be a trap for someone else. Lastly, Patreon and CZcams are good alternatives but consider them another arrow in your quiver.

Thank you and thank you for your insight. I tried to keep my social media use "just business" but the way a lot of them are designed kind of made it extremely difficult for me to do so. I have been considering using Cara, as I believe it works more like a kind of updating portfolio, but I will need to investigate further.

I've become a doomscroller and post basically nothing. Admittedly I've had a hard time making time to be creative, but even with the things I do, I still don't end up sharing it anywhere. I have very little to no motivation to post anything these days, and it's a bit demoralizing. So I just do projects around the house and for my family and friends.
