- "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" is a rock song written in 1975 by Alan Merrill and Jake Hooker of The Arrows, who recorded the first released version. The song was later made famous by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts in 1982.
Lyrics
I saw her dancing there by the record machine
I knew she must have been about seventeen
The beat was going strong, playing my favourite song
And I could tell it wouldn't be long
'Til she was with me (Yeah me)
And I could tell it wouldn't be long
'Til she was with me (Yeah me)
Singing
I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come on take your time and dance with me
She smiled, so I got up and asked for her name
"That don't matter," she said, "'cause it's all the same"
I said, "Can I take you home where we can be alone?"
Next we were moving on
And she was with me (Yeah me)
Next we were moving on
And she was with me (Yeah me)
Singing
I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come on take your time and dance with me
I said, "Can I take you home where we can be alone?"
Next we were moving on
And she was with me (Yeah me)
And we were moving on and singing that same old song (Yeah with me)
Singing
I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come on take your time and dance with me - Hudba

I feel bad that these guys wrote one of the most famous songs of all time and no one knows who they are
Alan Merrill wrote the song,. He owed Jake Hooker some money so he gave him a half share in all the songs he wrote for the Arrows which were all intended to be B-sides (backing songs by RAK Records favourite songwriters Mike Chapman, Roger Ferris and Phil Coulter). When RAK boss Mickie Most's wife Christina spotted that ILR&R was better than the song on the A side, she insisted that the Arrows rerecord a brighter version as an A side (this one) and put that out instead of "Broken Down Heart" which hadn't debuted too well. This A side was done at Abbey road and was just being launched when Arrows got into a dispute with Mickie Most and as a consequence, both singles are hard to find. However the song became very familiar (UK) from the multiple performances of it on the very popular weekly Granada TV show "Arrows" that ran throughout 1976 which is where Joan Jett first heard the song. Joan Jetts later cover version did a little less well in the UK possibly because it was more widely recognised as a cover version of a song from several years before. Alan always thought that this may have been one reason she kept his authorship under wraps for the American public, leading to the very widely held belief that she was the original artist. Her pioneering independent girl rocker image was much fresher in the USA than the UK (who had Suzi Quatro years before) and not talking about the older origin of the song fitted her narrative. But yes that was a great pity for Alan, who was a prolific and talented songwriter. He could have made a fortune selling songs to other artists or made his own career go global if he had been given the attention he deserved for writing this amazing song.. As it is, for reasons only known by inefficient record labels and unscrupulous accountants he didnt make all that much from Joan's version and ended up forced to take jobs as a sideman for first Derringer and later, Meat Loaf. When Britney Spears covered it, in the new millennium, he finally started seeing a decent income from the song and was able to set himself up as an independent artist. When that B side became an A-side Jake Hooker got lucky.. his loan of money for Alan's plane ticket from Tokyo to London netted him a small fortune in return....
Would think they got paid some pretty great money on the royalties from Joan's version.
No CZcams or social media at the time.
I just discovered them...I didn't know there was an original version. We just gotta let people know who they are! 😁 🎶
@@DRM-nb1fg It wasn't until Britney Spears version came out that the writer, Alan Merrill started getting enough money to live on. Some creative accounting back in the day by record companies etc, and a confusion over copyright, saw Alan Merrill having to work other jobs, even bartending at one point, to make ends meet. He was unable to find out where all the money was going between 1982-2002
Never knew Joan Jett's version was a cover. My life has been a lie.
lol. 😊
Same😭
I've only ever heard Joan Jett's version, but hearing this now makes me Love This version I lot more! It's so good!
When I tell people Joan Jett didn't sing the original, they don't believe me. Great song!
Apparently I ruined my friends life for telling him this lol. He did not want to know he was living the lie that joan jett wrote this song
@@r32fan92
This is what happened to with me. But I ended up liking this more than Joan Jett's version
Lesson learned today: Joan Jett is a cover! The Arrows nailed it
Sad, I had no idea the Joan Jet song was a cover of this. It's basically an exact copy of this. I dig it and since it's the original, definitely respect it.
yea atleast if you're gonna publish a cover and you're a famous artist change SOMETHING
@@emiplayz91 I dunno, it's a slippery slope. Some covers are so weird and different from the original they're just bad.
Joan Jett was a poser. I never liked her songs. Nothing original.
@@emiplayz91 i agree..if u can't put your own spin on it u shouldn't even do it and the Joan Jett version just isn't different enough... satisfaction by Devo is a prime example of how to do a cover
cry about it
I love Joan Jett's recording since it came out and finally after forty-one years have to discover it was a cover version 😲
I like both versions tbh
I do too.
Me too
So do I.
Same here! 😁👍

I'm really diggin' this original version of "I Love Rock n Roll" by The Arrows. I always thought Joan Jett was the composer, but I see now that actually this is yet another one of her many great cover songs.
Joan can never sing this better than Alan. RIP, man.
I'm listening to a band playing this song in my neighbor"s yard at a high school graduation party right now - almost 50 years and over 3,000 miles from the time and place they created this song. I wonder if at a gut level they understood any of that the first time they played it together.
Love this version alot. My first time hearing it this afternoon.
NS Steampunk HELLO?!
This is the first time in my life where the one everyone is used to hearing actually isn't as good as the original. The vocals just fit so damn well
I hate coronavirus. RIP Alan Merrill
This is way the best version.
Everybody is entitled to like what they want. That's what makes the music world great!
That's right. In this version guitars sound way better. Joan version is "ok"... but, "Bricth" version is the worst.
@@zltpsm yes

2001 is the best year, why you ask? Because is the same I was born & my most favorite rock band VOLBEAT🤟❤🔥🎶
Both, this one and Joan Jett’s cover sound awesome.
For sure!!
How sad I didn't there was a original I thought it was Joan Jett only. This one is so cool. May he rest in Peace. Coronavirus is killing a lot of people. Condolences to his family
R.I.P Alan Merrill
Sin ti no existiria una de las canciones más iconicas de todo el Rock n Roll
i can get over this song!!! cant get enough!! great to hear the original, Joan Jetts version has burnt me out.
I love Arrow❤🎉😊
Awesome, hope they are still on the go.
Joan was really good at making cover songs. Most covers are trash but Joans covers are all really good. Her cover of this is better than the original.
And I had never even heard of these guys. I thought Joan had written the song.
Nah this is leagues above Joan's karaoke brand cover
Never knew Joan Jett’s version was a cover until today when I was younger I loved Joan Jett’s version
it sounds rougher, more raw and more authentic than the Joan Jett version
Because it's original!!!
Agree. Joan Jett's is harder but the Arrows' sounds more confortable for me. I love them both though.
No way, Joan Jett version rips.
Joan Jett version rocks! However i did not know this was a cover until this gentleman passed away unfortunately ...
@@mr.onethirtyeight5088 same
After all of these years of hearing Joan Jett's version, I was under the impression that it was her own song. That was until I recently heard this version by the Arrows. I was rather surprised to learn that this is the original version. It blows Joan Jett's version out of the water! It's now my go-to version of the song.
Same here. For many years I just assumed Joan Jett was the original singer of that song. It wasn't until fairly recently that I found out different. I think it's safe to say that the vast majority of people don't know the song was first created and sung by another group (The Arrows).
The Arrows had their own television show in the UK, Joan Jett saw them performing it on their show when she was touring with The Runaways in 1976. The song must have made an impression on her as she recorded her own version with The Black Hearts in 1981, it became a wordwide hit the following year.
R.l.P Alan
wow, the original kicks ass, vocal, bass, etc.
I'm one of the few to be lucky enough to have heard this version first. Had it on my old iPad for the longest time. Joan Jett's cover just sounds wrong to me.
Here it is she’s only a two hit wonder I think and she didn’t even write one of the songs don’t know bout thee other yet
This song is so addictive⚡
Rest In Peace Alan Merrill. You & your music will always be with us Rockers!!
Alan Merrill wrote a great song when he wrote I Love Rock-N-Roll. His band performs it really well too. 👍👍👍
was today years old when i learned that joan jett merely covered this great song. too little, too late on my part; RIP Alan Merrill
They really did vanish , and its still such a mighty sound , its never aged and thats the test of a true classic.

well its true that u learn something new everyday,, NEVER ever knew this was a remake by Joan Jett,,, i love her, love her style her music,, just heard a very early version by her and thought wow good, but not what i grew up on and I never knew or heard of this band,, i love both of them, wow
Missing Alan every day :(
Better than the cover ..Very Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo! Should have been a hit back then!
This is of course considered the best version. But they laid the blueprint for Joan Jett and The Blackhearts to dominate the rock scene!!
RIP Alan Merrill, Jake Hooker and Paul Varley :(.
R.I.P Alan Merrill. Such talent. You will be missed!
I like this version.
Nothing beats original.
R.I.P. Mr. Merrill
I never heard this version. It's pretty awesome.
It's the original...
@@jebatman756 it can still be called a version lol
both are good I like arrows an joan jett. I knew of this song because on 1980s cartoon. called KIDD VIDEO the character Master Blaster sang I love rock and roll
the original isn't always the best but in this case it's most definitely the best
any song that has ever existed and will ever exist is only as good as each individual believes it is.
Yeah right...you and this singer's mom might believe that.
Joan Jett is awful. All of her hits are inferior covers to the originals. She's a poser and manufactured rock star.
Alan and the Boys made it by themself, it was B side, later Mickie Most made a new version and put it on as the A side single., so The Arrows made 2 recordings of it, I got it at My 50th Birthday from Alan...
This is seriously weird! I just watched a CZcams countdown of best rock covers ever from over 3 years ago. I'd never heard the original by The Arrows so I just looked it up. And I find out he died just yesterday (March 30)!! Talk about timing. RIP Alan Merrill.
R.I.P. ALAN MERRILL
Joan made big money from their song, I hope Arrows at least got a cut.
From interviews I've read the Arrows only started making real money on the song when Britney Spears recorded her cover in 2002. Jake Hooker was so disgusted at the paltry royalty payments he sold his share of the song to the Music Sales Group. Arrows singer Allen Merrill played guitar with Meat Loaf in 1986 to pay his rent. He didn't get rich from Jett's cover in spite of those internet rumors that the song made him a millionaire. He never gave up his writer's share so somebody had their hands in his pocket and there was some deep and ugly "pickpocketing" going on. Anyway, thanks to Britney all's well that ends well.

Powerful!
it's like passing a karaoke bar... your friend forced you to sing. but the result like.. wtf dude you rocks..🤘😆
This is the original version.
This IS a great version of the song. The original!
I remember back in ‘79 or ‘80 hearing Joan Jett & the Blackhearts playing this song live on the radio and was lucky enough to have been recording at the time (on a cassette tape). That version was faster and raw and REALLY “rock n’ roll” sounding - probably the best version I ever heard of the song, actually. I used to blast it as loud as my little “boom box” could play and friends would ask who it was, because they never heard it before. About a year later, they released the album and it was all over the radio ALL the time. But the studio version never sounded NEARLY as good as that live recording I had. It was a little anticlimactic. But, at least all the kids were playing this rock n roll song all the time rather than some of the other music that was popular on the radio that year. The times were changing and I was loving it. 🤘
upload to yt
The same can be said about The Arrows live version of their song. It was better than the studio version they made. There is a CZcams video of them singing the song live on their TV show. The question now is: which live version is better ... The Arrows or Joan Jett? I'll take The Arrows.
too much better than cover
Wow,very very greatfull.Thanks.🎸⚡

Thank you for the upload.
Wow, I grew up listening to the Britney Spears version thinking that was the original until someone in high school told me it's originally Joan Jett's song. Now I'm experiencing that once again and never knew that it was also a cover as well

right?
It's original
yeah.. the rough voices like d.....🤘
Yea i figured it out like 20 yrs ago but I been thinking the same ever since..the Joan Jett version is cool but not as good as this one..the original isn't always the greatest version of a song but in this case it's most definitely the best
Right?… i loved the cover for so long, not knowing that it was a cover… this is is better!!! Big shout to Joan Jett!!!

Missing from this list is "Mandy" by Barry Manilow. Not only was it a cover of a Scott English tune, but "Mandy" wasn't even the original title! The original was called "Brandy", but the producer wanted the name change so as not to confuse it with "Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)" by The Looking Glass
what?
Yeaaaaahhh

Joan Jett's version, which I once loved, has totally burnt out on me. Great to hear the original. Anyone who dares dislike this must like Joan Jett's version better.
Joan Jette is a savage and her version is good but this one kills it......waaaaaaay better

Holy *shit*...
Okay, I'm pretty sure I like this version more than Jett's...
Doesn't mean that Joan Jett sucks, not even by a longshot, but The Arrows just got more raw emotion, and power behind the lyrics, and the GUITAR riffs bro! It's... *groovy*, no other way to describe it, lmao.

Joan jett made it world wide known u gotta admit
Nice..ILRNR💗(:)
Joan Jett made a career out of cover versions. Remember she also did that 60s song Crimson and Clover which is originally by Tommy and the Shondells
Not to mention the Mary Tyler Moore theme!
Yeah she's covered everybody from Sly and the Family Stone to Gary Glitter.
But who cares? You dont need to do original songs to rock. Elvis didn't write his own stuff.
Joan Jett was famous in the runaways way before going solo maybe you should research a bit
RIP Alan.
