"I Love Rock 'n' Roll" is a rock song written in 1975 by Alan Merrill and Jake Hooker of The Arrows, who recorded the first released version. The song was later made famous by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts in 1982. Lyrics I saw her dancing there by the record machine I knew she must have been about seventeen The beat was going strong, playing my favourite song And I could tell it wouldn't be long...

I'm listening to a band playing this song in my neighbor"s yard at a high school graduation party right now - almost 50 years and over 3,000 miles from the time and place they created this song. I wonder if at a gut level they understood any of that the first time they played it together.

Holy *shit*... Okay, I'm pretty sure I like this version more than Jett's... Doesn't mean that Joan Jett sucks, not even by a longshot, but The Arrows just got more raw emotion, and power behind the lyrics, and the GUITAR riffs bro! It's... *groovy*, no other way to describe it, lmao.

After all of these years of hearing Joan Jett's version, I was under the impression that it was her own song. That was until I recently heard this version by the Arrows. I was rather surprised to learn that this is the original version. It blows Joan Jett's version out of the water! It's now my go-to version of the song.

Same here. For many years I just assumed Joan Jett was the original singer of that song. It wasn't until fairly recently that I found out different. I think it's safe to say that the vast majority of people don't know the song was first created and sung by another group (The Arrows).

The Arrows had their own television show in the UK, Joan Jett saw them performing it on their show when she was touring with The Runaways in 1976. The song must have made an impression on her as she recorded her own version with The Black Hearts in 1981, it became a wordwide hit the following year.

This IS a great version of the song. The original! I remember back in ‘79 or ‘80 hearing Joan Jett & the Blackhearts playing this song live on the radio and was lucky enough to have been recording at the time (on a cassette tape). That version was faster and raw and REALLY “rock n’ roll” sounding - probably the best version I ever heard of the song, actually. I used to blast it as loud as my little “boom box” could play and friends would ask who it was, because they never heard it before. About a year later, they released the album and it was all over the radio ALL the time. But the studio version never sounded NEARLY as good as that live recording I had. It was a little anticlimactic. But, at least all the kids were playing this rock n roll song all the time rather than some of the other music that was popular on the radio that year. The times were changing and I was loving it. 🤘

The same can be said about The Arrows live version of their song. It was better than the studio version they made. There is a CZcams video of them singing the song live on their TV show. The question now is: which live version is better ... The Arrows or Joan Jett? I'll take The Arrows.

There are some tradeoffs between this version and Joan Jett's. I like them both, but the guitars on the Jett version are mixed slightly better. Rick Byrd was a good bit more ambitious with his leads, and that infamous headstock bend at the beginning of the guitar solo is epic. The Arrows wrote a great song, but I think it's fair to say Joan Jett's version has slightly bigger balls.

You realize people write songs in their youth and continue to sing them right? You can also tell a compleatly made up story in your songs for your audience. The original writers, these guys, were early 20s when they released the song. In Jett's case, she started out in the Runaways when she was a teenager. "I Love Rock and Roll" came out when she was 19 or 20, so it's not that weird if she interacted with a 17-year-old boy at that time. In general, classic rock glorifies the energy and rebellious defiance of youth. Those songs were made when those folks were relatively young. Sometimes the age mentioned in old rock is 16. Are they actually talking about a 16 year old they knew? No, rock has always been about teenage defiance and coming of age. Not to mention the demographic for rock at this time was teens. Why would your storytelling be about early 20 year olds and not teens? Teens are the market and the ones going to sing it. You also got into the life when you were a teen, so the stories you might have are also from your teenage years. Look at some songs like Running on Empty. We can also look at other lyrics of the time such as "You're sixteen... you're beautiful... and you're mine." "Hold on to sixteen, as long as you can... changes coming round real soon will make us women and men." Being young, specifically being a teenager in America, has always been a part of the attitude and experience of rock and roll music. It started out as music that was aimed at teenagers, who in the 1950s in America were suddenly a brand new demographic of consumers.
