You could say "houseless" instead of "homeless" you can make a home anywhere but not necessarily have a house. I had a homeless friend when I lived in Hawaii.. she preferred being referred to as houseless for this reason.

@@StreetN1ckel He could always do some odd jobs, here and there to be helpful in his community. Heck you can land under the table work simply by volunatarily cleaning up parks and stuff if you stay dedicated and connect with people. I was homeless before and the ONLY flaws I found were the location and the people I chose to surround myself by. Otherwise, you are free and sometimes, in a good way, invisible.
I'm glad you made the very very important distinction between living a nomadic minimalist lifestyle as you do vs being out on the streets not by choice.
I don't everyone understands how easy it is TO end up on the streets. Even if a person is on the streets due to drugs, that's just because they don't know how else to deal with their pain. Our mental health system fails so many people.
That said, a lot of the time, it's the system that fails to care for it's people. I almost ended up on the streets myself - and not by choice. I was working full time, and then I got really sick with a very bad case of advanced mono and I ended up losing my job because I simply could not work. I applied for disability but you can't just immediately apply and get it. It can take 6-8+ months to find if you get it, assuming they don't deny you and you have to appeal. Assuming you even know what to apply for. I had savings, as I always lived below my means but I quickly went through that as you still have to pay rent etc. Thankfully my mom was in a place where she could help me and eventually I got SSD, but if you don't have a job with a living and proper wage where you can have savings, and/or if you don't have family that can help you out - boom you are out on the streets. I really wish people would know this and not judge people on the streets so harshly
Rebelwheels NYC - My thoughts exactly! I never thought it would happen to me as I was always pretty well off, but at age 55 I found myself in a situation very similar to yours a few years back. Like they say, most people are just one paycheck away from being homeless regardless if they are rich or poor. Thankfully my X-wife, of all people, helped keep me from having to live on the streets or under a bridge until I could get re-established. I look at homeless people differently now. I wonder what their story is that put them on the streets. Many are well educated people that had great jobs, but were hit with an illness or some other unforeseen circumstance that put them there. Not the lazy , halfwit bums as many see them as.
Yes, I mean I never looked down on them, but I also never realized just how easy it is to end up on the street, because they don't teach you that. Quite the opposite. But yes, it did change the way I view the situation and whenever I have extra food for the week (or if the grocery delivery service I use goofs on my order and accidentally gives me something that isn't vegan, I pass it on.
As a result of my experience, I firmly believe that if we are in a situation to help each other out. then we should because the system does not make it easy.
if man wasn't so fkn greedy wanting dozens of times too much money for abodes and made jobs a little easier for those of whom are not like "the rich kids of Beverly hills " It just might be a little less "tuff" out there.
It IS easy to end up homeless. I got hit with some health problems in my mid twenties and couldn't work anymore so I had to go on SSDI. I ended up in a "Crisis Center" which was like a nicer homeless shelter for months and then a boarding facility, and then I was lucky enough to find a couple agencies that rent subsidized housing for peanuts compared to "fair market rent" ($157 a month utilities included in the past and now $96 a month with $50-$100 utility bill). I've lived amongst the homeless and I definitely sympathize and understand now, compared to when I was younger and I arrogantly thought that it could never happen to me. I meet people with that same arrogant attitude I used to have and it makes me wish ill upon them so that they could gain that wisdom.
Very few people in America actually become homeless as statistics show. Stop acting like it happens just because of financial problems. The majority of the homeless have addictions and/or mental illnesses.
I myself am now 7 months "homeless" I moved into my car to avoid paying rent and 2 months ago I quit my job and have been traveling the country! I love it
Jillian D- Did you save money so that you could travel and sleep in your car? What about food, gas, insurance for you car etc.. You are "fooling yourself" if you believe this is a great way to live? I can say these things from personal experiences I am 59 years old. Been there , done that, and those times were NOT the HIGHLIGHTS OF MY LIFE!!!

I truly feel minimalist or more accurate for your situation. Yes, in the literal sense of the word you are homeless. But you absolutely choose to live this way. You are not impacted by homelessness, you are a minimalist. Love your videos, been watching for about a year now. Just think you should choose your words wisely!

Why would you have a pup when you are homeless???? I always see homeless people with dogs ,you are bringing a pet to endure a poor state of living. , freezing in the winter with no shelter from the snow or rain , hot in the summer no access to air conditioner , no vets visits , dirty eating water bowls etc.

Sold my home. Choose to be home free. Have gym membership for health and shower. I refuse to prop up banks with another mortgage. I refuse to pay 1200 a month for rent. Have a storage unit and I am happy. To hell with status quo.

It blew my mind when he said a lot of people have to work their hole life just to afford and live in a house. Would much rather be able to travel the world and get paid to live instead.

You are right when you say it is a big difference between being a privileged person with wealth choosing this lifestyle then a person going through hardships that lead them to be homeless. You can stop this lifestyle and go back to that wealthy lifestyle with a couple of phone calls. But I love the fact that you are doing this. You make a lot of sense. We are spoiled and richer then we know. We can learn a lot living this way. A lot of us can use a lesson on being humble. Thanks for the video sir. You are always welcome at my place to crash out. It's great you can identify with people, just never forget that unlike the truly destitute population, you do have wealthy family and friends you can rely on, as well as the ability to use a computer, a phone, etc, etc. One could argue that being able to 'choose' to be homeless is, in itself, a privilege.

I did yeah! To be clear I was NOT criticizing you... I totally get where you're coming from, I was simply reinforcing the importance of reminding yourself as much as possible where you come from because I do think that there is a unique experience for people do not have those lifelines vs those people who do. I know your heart is in the right place bud, for real. If anything I was mentioning moreso for anyone who comes in bashing you for having those advantages because I understand all-too-well what it's like to feel a desire to relate to the less-fortunate but have to anticipate people coming in and telling you how little you understand.

I’ve considered finding a cave somewhere here in Kentucky and living in it. Just me and my cat and dog.
I've been wanting to do exactly this for a long time. So much so that I even made my very own survival guide sourced both from reading and listening to folks like you talking about their experiences as well as doing a one month practice run. I was able to handle it surprisingly well.
As long as you have a decent amount of income, have a area(s) to sleep in peace (ideally quiet), access to a shower (gym is the most common solution), and a storage unit then you can live pretty damn comfortably. Income and shower are obvious but the storage unit is gonna be more important than you think. You can store your car (assuming you have one), clothes, food (get a very well insulated cooler and some ice and you can even store perishables for some time), and some portable cooking equipment to make healthy meals. So even worst case scenario if you are mugged or anything like that that at least your essential equipment are safe. I want to stress just how true it is that you mention your clean appearance because that REALLY DOES go a long way.
My city is surrounded by rural land, and so I've already scouted several spots and have never once been disturbed, even by nature. Buy a tent and some decent pads to sleep on w/ a sleeping bag and you can easily survive even in colder weather (I live in cali so this may not apply to everyone).
In that month I was losing quite a bit of weight but was by no means starving. I simply didn't have the means to sit down and watch TV all day and pig out on chips. All the free time and lack of distractions got me to start exercising again. It was among the happiest stretches of time that I had ever experienced. The sheer freedom was something that you just can't put into words fully. In that time I had so much free time that I even started going out to clubs/bars and even a couple of concerts. Something I've never really done before. It felt like a fucking adventure. But despite that, the lack of obligations to pay for things that I didn't really need was reward enough. With all of these expensive luxuries stripped away I was able to stop focusing on material things and instead focus on my passions like traveling.
But alas it didn't last forever. Literally the only thing stopping me is the fear that my family would be disappointed and possibly stop talking to me. They've done quite a bit to help me in life financially, but I'm still not happy. It almost feels foolish to let something like that stop me, but it really holds me back from taking the leap. I wish I had the determination to do what you do. Maybe some day I'll finally muster the courage... Godspeed my dude. You and people like you are an inspiration to me.
Yep your almost immediately an outcast and a weirdo if you go off the beaten path. Also it’s not as comfortable as you might think. I’ve been “homeless and privileged” and it’s not great. This guy has a screw loose.

Thanks for yet another thought provoking video. I guess for me, who's followed you for some time, is the knowledge that you can go home, to your parental home, at any time, and your parents will and do accept you, exactly as you are. This is not the case for the majority of 'homeless' people, whether they are homeless by choice or not.
I admire your authenticity and courage, by what you say, and how you live your life. But I wonder if you would choose the same lifestyle, if you had not had a very privileged material and emotional upbringing?
And the ongoing support from your family? I'm sure that if you needed any sort of help, that your parents would come to you, transfer money to you, and support you in any/every way that they could.
With this ongoing encouragement and support always available, and I'm not suggesting that you would want to use it, it makes it a lot easier to 'choose' to be homeless. Just sharing some of my thoughts ...

When you get old it good to have a stable place to live. Being without a home when you are young is okay . Life does throw you curve balls .
All the men in my family die by 60 so I won't get to grow old anyway :)
This is what we are conditioned to think because so many of us are spoiled. You don't necessarily need a "house" at ANY age. It's not like this house is your blood and oxygen and you need it for life support. It's just a dusty building with 4 walls that will eventually need repairs. As long as your mind is stable, you can live anywhere and you don't need it to function in life.

Thanks for your honesty brother you seem like a good man I will be homeless again this Saturday not excited but it is what it is my biggest annoyance from being homeless in past experiences is ppl constantly stealing my shit everywhere I go and it really sucks I just wish that I could have something for once and I can't carry everything I have so it ends up sold or in the garbage really sucks but it is what it is yah know.

Thanks for sharing, about your experience. One thing I would like for people to know about persons experiencing homelessness, is that MOST people experiencing homelessness do have a job, but they are not able to pay rent (especially in cities). Additionally the people that we see on the streets that are our stereotype of a homeless person, is really just 10% of the people (think of the people we see experiencing homelessness as the tip of the iceberg) In Denver, where I live, most people experiencing homelessness are young children, followed by women. We don't see them out on the street because it is more dangerous for them. They are often in shelters or staying with friends/relatives. (this is all data from my experiencing working close to the homeless populations in Denver, so in other areas of the country/world these stats could very well differ). So this is just an additional piece of information for people to consider when thinking of persons experiencing homelessness.
I live out of my prius. I don't need an apartment to live. It's good to save money. If my job ever gets so bad I hate it I'm not forced to stay because it pays the bills. I can work part time too

I'm at the point where I rather be homeless in another continent than where I am now (new york). Tired of living with toxic family. Rather be alone & somewhere totally different. If I can make a living in Brazil from scratch, or be homeless in Brazil, it'll be worth it

I think the life you choosed is fantastic. But I also think that it is so beautiful because you are young, healthy and if you get tired of this life you can go home to your family that would not abandon you. I wish you could do this life as long as you want !! I also think you're good at doing your job, and if things go bad with your you tube channel , you can always do pottery, or teach Yoga. So you have many alternatives to make this lifestyle. Unfortunately it is not so simple for everyone. But I agree with your lifestyle.
I’m currently living in my truck due to selling my house and moving my family across the country. I think of it as urban camping to make it less sad I guess. I have a full time job and still struggle and I don’t like the people who make signs being lazy being annoying to people. I try to keep my distance and sleep in parking lots but the police have told me I can’t do that anymore. Tonight’s my first night in a shelter and I’m really worried

I'm basically the same way except I have a car that I stay in instead of a bicycle. I own very few possessions and everything that I own will fit into a four feet by four feet storage room with space left over. The storage room is still empty enough with everything in it that it also doubles as a dressing room where I sometimes change into different clothing. My car is the only place that I call home. I also work and save money. I could rent an apartment or stay in a motel or something but I choose not to. I am the kind of person who is able to adjust quickly to different situations so living in my car isn't that big of a deal to me. I am however looking for a van or SUV to use as a camping vehicle. And there is shelter all around me like libraries, restaurants, hospitals and other places so it isn't like I can't get cool or warm when I need to. I also have gym memberships for a place to exercise and shower.

i really would like to try this way of life but i have no way to make money while doing something like this
well i really wanted to live this way as well with no way to make money...so in 2014 i started and YT and posted 500 videos before i started to get paid, you got to put in the work to work online if that is what you want, it's not handed to you. OR you can live like this and work for a couple months then nomad for a couple months, there i work everywhere

I have a couple times in my life, back in my 20's, chosen to be houseless, but never more than a few weeks. I always had a job, but I on a few occasions sat down and planned gap in between living arraignments to save some money. Think lease ends on June 20th and I cannot move in to my new place until July 10th, I chose to go without a place for the interim. It does allow me a little insight into the truly homeless, but it is I know not the same, I had the money that I could have just stayed in a hotel for the interim. I like you did prioritize not looking homeless. That is I believe the reason a person gets stuck being homeless, if you let your personal appearance go and forget how to have good social manners, people will not let you back in out of the rain so to speak.
This is kinda inspirational. I've often wondered what it would be like to live this way. Metallica - Wherever I May Roam sums it up pretty well. "...and with dust in throat I crave, only knowledge will I save, to the game you stay a slave...Rover, Wanderer, Nomad, Vagabond, call me what you wiiiill!" I've managed a monthly income of about $750 through the mail, so this sounds tempting. Do you really ride your bike from State to State or do you pay for travel and only use the bike once you've localized somewhere? This is very interesting, not a lot of people like this out there. I don’t feel it’s your intention to stereotype.. but just think about the way we toss around the term “homeless” people. You might as well talk about “housed people”. As I am sure you know, persons are not defined by their condition. I have been trying to speak of persons living outside just as I would refer to a person with money or a person diagnosed with depression, etc..

I was attracted to the minimalist lifestyle 4 many years well I was working and had the trappings of job house and wife until I was 55 I am so much junk I didn't need. Then I became disabled and I lost everything except the wife. Losing all that stuff was very Freedom. Now all I can do couch surf well I have my cell phone

I was homeless for roughly 1 1/2 years before I decided I would rather just deal with society for a little bit and purchase a home and have kids. Living on the land just isn’t sustainable for the long term. The issue with society doesn’t have to do with shelter, it has to do with financial greed and evil. Even the superwoke all natural Indians lived inside.
"Living on the land just isn't sustainable for the long term" is totally false. It just depends on how creative that person is and how they maneuver in life. This life is not for everyone, but it can be done. The choice to deal with society and the stresses that come with it will be your responsibility now.

I've been homeless before. Wasn't by choice, and I had no income. However, I still think there's some positive aspects of being homeless (like, actually homeless). A lot of what you talked about applies to my experience as well.

I must say that your life sounds quite adventurous, free...lacking burdens that weigh us down....wonderful....and riding a bike is such fun and so healthy....Just one small criticism.... although I am unaware of the facts, but you make more than I do a month...do you give a fair contribution to the ones who let you sleep at their homes ? Not if its a one off, but if it were a regular thing, I think it would only be fair... Just a thought...cos, as youre still quite young, maybe you hadn't thought about it.... you’re not homeless. you have a house (your parent’s, presumably). if you want a job, a credit card, etc., you have an address. your phone that you checked? you have a billing address for it. if you’re truly stuck- what would happen? do you sleep on the streets, sell your body, etc.? no, you can get an airbnb. you’re not LITERALLY homeless. you’re currently without a current address, sure, but more on point- you’re literally TRAVELING. you’re traveling! you’re a rich white boy who has a permanent address at home but likes to go on bike tours and rough it, on purpose. which is cool, you do you! and do your social media thing! but don’t call it homelessness. you are not without a home. you’re on a trip.
you make 1k, so 12k a year. i don’t know how you calculate that, how your taxes might work. but if you lived in berkeley, where you’re staying, you probably would have rent ranging from 1k-1.5k, depending on your situation. or less, if you’re sharing a room. so you don’t survive on 12k (or whatever might be left if you’re paying taxes on that). you survive off of much more- from other people’s pockets. you don’t pay rent. you live off of OTHER PEOPLE’S HARD WORK because they DO have to pay rent (and, you know, clean)! you don’t have everything on a bike. you use other people’s possessions, WiFi, etc. which is cool. like, do that! you have generous friends and that’s great. but you can’t dismiss your living costs just because you’re not paying for the bed you’re being given for free out of the goodness of your friends’ hearts.
one’s earting disorder should NOT be fixed by HOMELESSNESS. that’s absolutely absurd and offensive. we all have the ability to recover from EDs and eat intuitively and happily. the idea that homelessness is good for eating disorders is so fucked. it plays right into the idea that food has control over us, that we cannot be trusted to have food/resources and must restrict. restriction and fear of not having enough will not make you well. quite the opposite. i’ve never been homeless, but after my access to food was limited due to life circumstances, my eating disorder arose- because i was suddenly terrified of not having enough, and when i finally had enough, i overate. when your situation is actually difficult, eating is not EASIER. eating is harder.
and god, calling it a LIFESTYLE. i’m sorry, but you really are privileged. deeply. congrats, you represented everything terrible about millennials in this video. you’re not experiencing whatever it is you say you feel obligated to experience. if you want, try living in a shit apartment in east oakland, working two jobs as a waiter to make it through. try no money for 10-hr ink sessions, no time to ride a bike. try freaking out about an injury because going to the doctor is expensive. try living on canned beans and soup with no fresh produce, eating dumpster-dived bread. then maybe you can say you’ve lived on the other side. but until then, maybe reconsider this sort of video. it IS offensive.

Very good open and honest discussion about your chosen lifestyle and the difference between it and being truly homeless without choice. I grew up in a very modest home raised by parents who grew up during the great depression. Having food, a clean, safe home and a comfortable bed to sleep in was luxury to them and actually it was to me. I have NEVER seen myself as "white privileged" and that term does NOT apply to me or anyone else just because they are white. So that term is highly inaccurate and disgusts me. I do see primarily white kids that have more, have done more by the age of 12 than I have in my entire lifetime of 60 years. Doesn't seem fair that they get the edge in life over other kids of ANY race. So on that I agree with you Jackson. Stay safe and travel well!
Being homeless has changed my life in both negative and positive ways, matter fact id say this the first time I went homeless in June 2020-November 2020, this was actually such a positive experience for me, I found God and like everything felt like God had planned out this unique journey for me for a reason and that I was doing good things and makint the right choices. God was putting me through this hell because it'll benefit me and bc I can handle it. Well I went to jail for 3 months I got out back to the street nope no daily drug use, I can't afford such luxurys. My life is survival and if I'm being straight up 100% everyday is harder and harder, my trust and relationship with christ or god depletes every day just like my will to live. I don't have time to break it all down but basically my heart is broken it feels like God is playing some sick game on me and like I deserve all of everything happening to me but also like do? I just wanna hold my daughter again and be her daddy everything god has taken away from me and I mean literally everything I could care less but why has he giving me the most amazing thing ever in my life just to take it away from me, i refuse to live a life without my daughter I want out I didn't ask for this and if I did then clearly I didn't know any better, life still has its moments and whatever yada yada but like I don't like being alive and like eternal life with god sounds gr8 whatever but is all this pain worth it ???
I really don’t get the impression from you that you know at all what it is to be homeless. I don’t think you can fathom just how desperate and hard things can be. If ever you fall suddenly without any net-emotionally, physically, mentally, financially...you can quickly become a person that is living on the survival edge. This video really bothered me. I don’t think a person should ever pose in this way to know that sort of struggle. Your lovely chosen traveler’s life and true survival without an end in sight are diametrically opposed.
If you were taking your time and your money and serving others that were actually surviving on some level I’d give mad respect.

However, there is a segment of the unhoused who just can't be arsed to take care of themselves, that sort is a parasite take resources from the "deserving" poor. Public services/shelters/welfare are for those who can't help themselves.

my farmhouse makes me desire homelessness cause.....I CANNOT STAND CLEANING FLOORS ANYMORE OR WASHING WINDOWS OR CUTTING THE USELESS GRASS AND THE REGULAR MAIL DELIVERY!!! But, i love having my own huge bathroom on a second floor overlooking yonder farm fields, so, a bucket of soap and water and a mop and floors.......here i come....
I'm homeless myself and I enjoy it, I mean I don't drink or do any drugs, I just earn my money selling postcard sized watercolor paintings of animals to people. I make sure that I'm clean and presentable at all times, yeah I mean it's cool just as long as I don't cause trouble
and alcohol is not a drug. the government is going to label it as a poison, which it is. kills 3.5 million every year. cannabis has killed no one directly from it in 7000 years. hmmm, who makes the laws?

Why not just buy a tiny house and live out of that? You could take it anywhere you want to go and you could still live the minimalist life style.

Tinyhouses are not very easy to transport, usually customized vans are much more suitable for traveling a lot and having a mobile home

i agree with you, there's no point to all that effort when you could live with way less. i wish there was more minimalistic projects in society, because i would rather have a home - i would rather a cheap, diminute one though - than being on the street, but the capitalist system is created in such a way that having a home is way more expensive than the benefit you take from it. i think everyone realize the price is too high, somehow, leftism politics still focuses on more govermental resources instead of reducing our expensive way of live and the right-wing feels a pathethic pride in reducing their potential to a statistical number. meanwhile, it could be so easy if we just got rid of all our materialist crap and obsession with being in control.
