Here you can see the difference in road maintenance in Italy and Switzerland. In both countires, the roads in the Alps suffer from frost damage every winter. In Switzerland it is immediately repaired, hence all the road works in progress along the way, and in Italy it is not, which is evidenced by all the cracks and potholes in the roads at the beginning of the trip. What also is noticable is the amount of heavy goods traffic on the road. The pass must not be very steep.

Eine interessante Tour von Italien in die Schweiz. Während die Grenzgemeinde Gondo und das Dorf Simplon im Kanton Wallis noch südländisch wirken, verändern sich die Dörfer, je weiter man in Richtung Brig fährt.
Danke für's Mitnehmen 🙂.
Kleine Anmerkung: am Simplon-Pass selbst gibt es u.a. den Rotelsee (ein künstlich angelegter See) und den Hopschusee, ein natürlicher Bergsee. Leider sind sie von der Straße aus nicht zu sehen.

Thanks for showing some of the old route. Rounding the hairpin out of Domo in a pre 70's none turbo none power steering truck would be very challenging, up and down. Is or was there a significant price difference for fuel Swiss/Italy, as there are three fuel stations in a row at Swiss side of Gondo. Is a ROLA system used in winter through the mountain by rail when the pass is closed for trucks?
