  • What camera has the best portrait Colors between Canon, Fuji, Nikon, and Sony?
Here are sample photos to help you decide, on your own, what you prefer. Everyone is going to have their own opinion on what they think is best. I've used most brands and prefer Canon and Fuji, but play with these and see what you think.

In this video, I compare the RAW Colors on the Sony a7Cii, Canon R5, GFX 100 II, and Nikon Z8 from a Portrait photographer's point of view.

I shoot portraits and do photography for people and a recent switch from Sony to Nikon for me was an eye opener. I literally just do 3-4 adjustments with the exposure sliders and just export the pictures. The RAW image from the Z8 is just close to perfections straight from camera.

Ely thanks a ton for sharing the files, was super useful and came in need. Been looking for a good video comparison between the R5 and GFX 100s/100 ii mainly for portraits and lifestyle shoots, even better when i got to tweak the RAWs myself. After comparing files of the two it seems Fuji definitely takes the cake on skin tones and overall dynamic range. In editing it seemed I didn't really have to do anything to the Fuji files, with Canon I had to tweak them quite a bit to get the same skin tones. I'd so love to get the GFX 100 ii because of these reasons, but worrying a bit whether the camera could keep up with autofocus and the pace of some faster paced shoots. So hard to say which one is the correct purchase 🤔

I have sony a7r5 and a7iii. I have always loved canon look but didn’t want to sell my lineup. I have been taking amazing photos with my sony and learned to prefer the sony look over others. Green skintones can easily be changed in Post. We have to realize shooting raw allows for pretty much and change to colors you want. Camera doesn’t even matter at that point.

it's always fun to play with new gear. I'm a Nikon shooter with some experience in Fuji X system. Personally I love Nikon colors, but I don't think I can pick out different colors of the other systems if those were full frame sensors in raw. I also think the Fuji GFX just has an advantage in dynamic range and color reproduction due to the extra pixel size. My Z9 and Z8 are perfect for me, but I find the more I shoot my ZF, I just love the images I get. I like the direction Nikon is going if they can do something like the ZF moving forward.

When you have a beautifully lit portrait or landscape and are shooting at ISO 64, the 45mp Nikons are stunning. But when you're running around doing street or event photography, I can't tell the difference between my Z8 and Z6. And if it starts getting dark, the noise performance of the 24mp sensor is definitely better (though the Z8 still looks great despite being 45mp)

  • @StevenCress

From my limited experience, Capture One Pro largely levels the playing field when it comes to color science between cameras and eliminates any shortcomings with older Sony cameras. I don't know how the magic behind their "ProStandard" color profiles work, but it's what drew me to Capture One starting out with the Sony A7III. Oddly, my wife uses Lightroom, and I use Capture One on the same MacBooks. I thought the Sony A7III had awful sickly looking colors in SOOC JPEGS or Lightroom but importing the RAWS to Capture One instantly fixed the problem. Endless fiddling with presets and sliders can get you close in Lightroom. With the newer generation like the Sony A7IV, it seems to not matter so much if at all.
I think Adobe tries to mimic the different manufacturers' idea of color while Capture One doesn't care and just tries to generate their own "Capture One" color.

After being fed up with Sonys Skintones (a7s3/a74) after 3years, i tested Fuji, Canon for months…Fuji had the best colours but highlight rolloff, iso and esp. AF Wasnt good enough to commit to it…Canon applies such a strong look to all images that i quickly grew tired of…nikon wasnt competitive before the z8, so i considered them last…and boy was i shocked how good their tones, contrast, skintones and HL-rollof were…to me the only brand that had skintones on the same level as the Fuji yet it was fullframe. They also allow third party Lenses from Tamron…
Nikon came superlate to the game but the z8, colourscience esp. in mixed tough light, af, Lenses (1.8 primes, Third party zooms) but won my heart in a big way…
I Loved Sonys Lenses and performance, but in suboptimal Light (!) their colours just require so much more work for good skintones imo (i always got there, but it was tedious)
Nikon is on another level in this regard, but i wish i could buy a 135 1.8 GM for 1000bucks again… :)

    • @m0nztam0nk

Since you mentioned Nikon feeling „muddy“:
-Canon: applies a TON of in camera sharpening and „definition“ that you cant get rid off of you want a smoother/natural look, and the colours tend towards brown a LOT
-Sony: Ton of sharpening ooc, but less midtone definition, terrible high iso noise colour shifts
-Fuji apsc: amazing files, but breaks apart quickly in low-ish light and high contrast scenes (blown out skintones are real)
-Nikon: much (!) less sharpening by default, if you apply it in LR its roughly like Canon: Canon id put at 0sharpness and -5clarity, and nikon 70sharpness and +5clarity to be roughly equal…

Af surprising now Nikon. Ergonomics, draw. Professional Service, canon. I use Sony sometimes but they just aren’t my cup of tea from ergonomic colors, also don’t like how aggressive their reps are. Great stuff as always, love the goofy hat :) I shoot on GFX 100s and Canon RF5 - same preference for color, I think the gfx line has the best colors I've ever seen on a camera. Canon because of skin tones and the overall pleasing look. Sony looks too artificial - like you said - colors and oversharpened/crunchy look. Nikon - I only used a D700 for some time long ago and didn't like the yellowish skin tones at all but I'm sure they improved a lot - I've seen some incredible photos taken with Nikon for sure.
I also think Canon's 5D line has the best colors out of all of their models, even better than the new R cameras.

In the CCD era Canon and Nikon were mediocre. I used Nikon professionally for concerts because they were the only ones making decent APS-C bodies (so I could use only their 85mm F1.8D lens for 90% of the work) and I had a Canon plastic fantastic 1100D as a casual camera. Anyway, fast forward to when Nikon stopped making good enough APS-C cameras (Z50 huge letdown) I immediately switched to Fuji. Now I shoot HEIF in half resolution to the 2nd card slot and in 98% of cases it's good enough for the desk managers. Such a quality of life improvement. The downside is that Fuji still doesn't have a fast 135mm prime, which has become more important in later years as venues more rarely have photo pits. But the Samyang 135mm F2 does the job.
