    There are a few great reasons to love and prefer almost any brand of camera.
    But there are surely several MORE great reasons to love Fuji cameras. Fuji gives you a hell of a lot of camera for the dollar spent. Built quality, color profile employed, even JPG quality if you prefer JPG. Fuji knows color because they're a film manufacturer, more than for any other reason.

    I own three Sony bodies and 16 e-mount lenses. One of them is an a1. I’ve talked other people into switching to Sony. I used to hang out with a camera club that took to calling me “our Sony brand ambassador.” And I’m definitely a bit of a Sony fangirl. But Sony’s feature implementation strategy has me planning to buy a Nikon in the week ahead. Focus bracketing will make my life a lot easier. And I know it’s available in the a7r5, but not my a1. And I just cannot justify the cost of an a7r5 when it costs less to buy a Nikon + lens, I know Sony won’t keep the a7r5 up to date, and I just don’t otherwise have a need for the a7r5. I’m rather upset about it. Frankly, I don’t even want a Nikon. But Sony has made that the most sensible way to get the feature I need. I guess I’m Jordan’s pissed off a1 owner. My business is still Sony’s to lose. But they’re already making me buy a Nikon.

      Totally agree 👍 sony need to listen and add features to existing models .. I shoot an a7r4 and would like the new menu system . Use of touch screen on menu . Most importantly focus bracketing . Bird eye autofocus be I ng added ... this ethos of not updating firmware will piss off so many owners .. 🙄

      Given the ever increasing prices of cameras, it seems manufacturers have switched from a "razor and blades" business model where lenses generated the vast bulk of the profits, to a "why not both" model where cameras are also profit drivers, with predictable outcomes. Business practices are more and more becoming a differentiator. The issues were masked for a long time by volunteer developers creating custom firmware (for example MagicLantern) which delivered advanced features like focus bracketing and HDR video, even withheld features like Kelvin white balance all the way down to Canon Rebel cameras. Many have left Canon not least because of their business practices of withholding features and closing lens mounts.
      Sony removed their extensible firmware plugins and is slow to add these features back in, and other brands are following suit. I used to be very happy with features being added to Fujifilm cameras (which have focus bracketing in all their cameras to boot and have experimented with light trails in their beginner cameras, and added high res to their recent models) but they have slowed down their pace considerably. There are too many features you can only find from Olympus (HHHR, live long exposure / light trails) or Pentax (astrotracker) that are pure software, any camera should have these in principle (yes, astrotracker needs GPS but location data can come from a smartphone).
      I predict that the first brand to open their cameras to custom community-developed plugins delivering advanced features such as variable frame rate time lapse, focus bracketing, ISO interleaved video, even custom AI autofocus modes, will clean up in the market. Seeing how slowly things are going, that might be a Chinese brand, so Japanese brands be warned, the days of their exclusive stranglehold on the market may be counted.

    • @jonathan2430
      @jonathan2430 Před rokem +2

      I agree. I’m a Sony a7rV user and will never buy an a1, yet still feel for a1 users. Plus I know I’ll be in the same boat when an A7V comes out with new features my rV will never get. It makes no sense not to provide feature updates to prior models. Upgrade paths should be made justified based on hardware improvements, not by holding back on software/firmware updates on prior models.
      Sonys saving grace to me is lens options, it’s the only reason why I stay Sony for now and the foreseeable future.

    • @Re-InCarNation

      I hear the reason for the lack of updates on the A7 & A1 series bodies is because the person in charge of the camera division has a harder time selling cameras in the ZV line & FX line, so they are holding back on updates for the A7 & A1 series fearing that it would cannibalise sales of the ZV & FX series camera.

I feel like DPR and Nikon have left the chat. People who rarely use any of the newer ML features love the Nikon lineup that much more. The S5II was the first camera I had left over buttons to remap! If Nikon just brought back the AF "pod", the BKT button, and one Fn button they'd solve half their UI problem. Not to mention how limited their customization is and needing 13+ AF modes that still don't compete with Canon or Sony when it comes to tracking.

    Great chat guys and some real food for thought in the opening third. The X100 video was the first Chris Nichols video I saw! I had a D90 at the time which was great, but I really wanted something smaller for gig and street work, with better and small lenses. Nikon back then were forcing you to buy full frame glass for APSC bodies if you wanted good lenses. Saw the X100 video and it just clicked for me. Later traded my D90 for an X-Pro1. The autofocus was far worse but the images I just loved. I've been with Fuji ever since. Autofocus wise they continue to lag, there's been odd quirks and glitches in their recent cameras like occassional freezes and they no longer Kaizan like they used to but man, I just love their cameras, lenses and the images they produce for gig / arts / wedding and documentary photography, and the cameras don't spook the subjects either.

    I wouldn't call $2000.00 something entry level. It just proves how expensive all of this stuff has gotten. I think the ZV-E1 is cool for the creator not the photographer. If you are not around $5000.00 it is almost impossible to get any of the Sony's kitted reasonably out. It would be crazy if Sony and Panasonic got together. Sony's AF and more, and Panasonic IBIS, would be scary cool stuff. Resolution isn't just about whether it is 4K UHD, or 1080P. It is more of the basics that matter and lenses. I will agree with Jordon, that S5 II is great. I am learning with much less expensive gear than the latest costs. Plus I buy used anyway too. New is out of the question.

    • @jockturner1547
      @jockturner1547 Před 11 měsíci

      Except $2000.00 for a full frame camera is entry level. About 10-15 years ago a full frame camera would have cost you 3-4k full frame was professionals only. Now we have options in the $1500-$2000 range, that makes them the entry level FF camera.
      However, I do agree that the pricing of the Zv-E1 is all wrong $2000 for that consumer focused product, that overheats, has a single card slot, no EVF is stupid.
      It should have been $1500. It simply doesn’t make sense to purchase when you can get a far more feature packed camera at $2000 in the S5ii or spend $500 more and get an A7iv.

    I'm a full-time professional hybrid shooter. and I shoot all brands: Sony, Nikon, Canon.
    The colors for stills on my Sony A7iv are appalling and quite frankly disgusting. For stills, my fav is the Nikon Z6ii. The images have "soul", after that Canon R5 - which still have great colors - but very neutral and clinical "Feel" to the images. I don't use Sony for stills at all. even if the Sony Raw files are flexible - takes me more time to get it where I want to - So my go-to for stills are the Nikon and Canon. For video I still prefer the Sony - even if the colors suck it just works, and so reliably. Canon R5 video colors are great, but the interface is clunky. AF not reliable and not very comfy to operate. The Nikon Z6ii has good colors, but 8-bit only, and mine stops recording randomly which makes me nervous. so the Video goes to Sony.

    I spent years shooting with all major camera brands. And the most troublesome when it comes to post-processing is Sony. People are correct saying that Sony has bad colors, or more correctly in some light situations (especially some artificial lights) some colors (skin in particular) are bad beyond repair. In daylight all cameras are capable of producing good colors. Neither I'm a fan of Canon, though I was ok with their skin colors, shooting the nature with Canon is evoking too much profanities towards the camera, and the company in general. Moreover, Canon body customization is awful.
    There aren't perfect cameras that would check all the boxes, but Nikon is the brand that I'm least disappointed with.

I have found its the lenses and the camera body that feels the best in your hands are what creates that image, not the camera sensor size and megapixel count. The camera that is best will be dependent on which camera body (and lenses) feel most comfortable in your hands, in conjunction to which menu system makes the most logical sense. This answer is custom to each individual person. What works best for me and my use cases may/may not work for you and vice-versa. We benefit from having a large selection of choices.

If the zv-e10 gets upgraded that may be even better at its even more compact size and weight, but the current version hardware is too old. If my budget was less the zv-e10 would still be my top pick though. I don't believe in waiting for features that maybe could happen in firmware for any camera.

Because lenses would not need to be redesigned , theyr image projection circle are totally underused ; Huge surface gain from 24x24 to 36x36, variable ratios in de finder with internal shift (!), longer than 36mm 'panorama' video, and with round sensor you could add autolevelling in full frame, the camera body, and lens buttons layouts can be optimized for "one orientation hand only', ...,)

By using a rectangle you get more pixels in one direction and fewer in the other, and this gives you flexibility to choose your orientation. If you have a square sensor, you'll end up with pixels in one of the directions and not choose if you want more pixels vertically or gorizontally

      @@bluecollar8525 I guess that there is a misunderstanding since I (at this stage) dont understand anything of what You explain here. What's the misunderstanding...
      'My' sensor would be square with the 4 equal lengths, each equal the lengths of a diagonal of a 24x36mm. Then, in the finder (or on your pc) you'd dial in the cropp you want to frame with. My argument is that this formula would not need to redesign lenses (of any size-system) as they do cover that that space already, but are under-used.

So far no issues from the heat, and as I refine my settings I can trust the autofocus and can see the box on target that my cell phone doesn't have. If you hate using your phone screen as the primary way you frame your shot or video it'll be hard, but if you can get used to it, it's part of what makes the small size. If size doesn't matter to you, get a full size camera, possibly when the next new ones come out.

    DPReview was my go to site for information when I wanted to know how a particular camera performed, so that I could make a good informed decision. It helped me in comparing various camera systems if I was considering going from Sony to Canon, as an example. Sadly, if you purchase an Olympus, you need to be prepared to stick with it because no one is buying them here in my area. I have one for sale and no one wants it, not even the Camera Store where I bought it. For some reason, Micro Four Thirds is a niche, so, if I ever want to switch to Fuji, I will have to find an actual Camera Store who sells Olympus Cameras in-house. Four Olympus Cameras to trade at some point. KEH might get a couple. Something told me to choose Fuji. OM Systems appears to have their issues, from what I am seeing on CZcams. I have an E-PL10, E-M1, Pen E-P5 and E-M10 MkIV. Olympus lenses on these bodies perform best, my Panasonic/Lumix lenses not so well, however, software can adjust for that in post processing. The E-M1, purchased through KEH performs great. The PL10 and MkIV are considered entry-level in their tier. The E-P5 is a remarkable camera and considered a classic. I have the optional eyecup which is nice. E-M1 and E-P5 were both purchased from KEH, shutter count was really low, which surprised me. Wished I would have kept my Fujifilm X-T3 I had years ago. COVID took out a lot of Camera Shops and we lost one in our city that actually sold Olympus 3.5 years ago, probably to Amazon or another online distributor. The internet is destroying family shops in all walks of life involving tech.

      Why not just stick with the gear you have. Olympus and OM systems cameras ar great, I have the omd 1 mark ll, lll, Em1X and the OM 1 and use them all for diffent things. I realy don't care what my friends or other people use as long as my gear fits my needs. The larger sensor mirrorless cameras are 1. More expensive 2. Heavier espessiully the lenses 3. Have less functions. I would never be able to carry two or three cameras with different lenses with me if I had fullframe, but with olympus/OM 1 that's possible. And the image quality is exelent.

I enjoy shooting with them and they do take great out the camera pictures. My son wants the PL10 as his 1st camera, so, I can teach him how to use it. He seems to have a knack for seeing things differently when we are out shooting that I miss, so, maybe he can teach me some things.

  • @TITAOSTEIN
    @TITAOSTEIN Před rokem +3

    I agree with Chris. Much is discussed about FF cameras, DR, IQ, AF, but fundamental factors are forgotten: durability, fun and usability. The discussion about performance and maximum image quality as a main focus can be important in some cases and above all for extreme professional use, but this discussion is fundamentally meaningless for the use of a camera in general, whether professionally in non-extreme situations, either as a hobby. The phrase that the best camera is the one you bring with you is true. And I mean CAMERAS, not Smartphones. Because Smartphones meet a good demand from the photographic universe, but they don't meet those who want something more. Smartphones do not allow the use of big lenses and are not capable of quality macro photography, in addition to suffering even more from the limitations of a smaller sensor. They are good for snapshots. It seems that there is reductionism at work: either you shoot with Smartphones or you need a FF, which is silly! For luckily we, professionals and amateurs of photography, have a good variety of tools to choose from. So I find it regrettable that these hypes lead the consumer market to almost condemn systems and manufacturers, reducing and not increasing the palette of options that exist! I have Panasonic, Sony, Nikon and Olympus/OM Cameras. Each has its appropriate use. But the Camera I use most of the time is the OM-1 (and the em-1iii), and for one simple reason: FUN!!!

    Nikon is lagging because Sony Marketing has done a better job buying CZcams photography influencers. We are now trained that photography is not possible without eye-AF. We are also trained that everyone buying a dedicated camera is a social media creator, everyone else should simply use their iPhone. Without the eye [pupil, not eye-lashes] in focus, the image will simply fail on IG when seen on people's phones! The YT video will be a disaster! Sports photographers should give up if the eye is out of focus, nobody will care about the image! Sony has trains YT photographers to hammer this home very well. We should also simply switch systems very 2-3 years, because Sony will have cool new tech that we MUST have!
