I worked temporary jobs in Washington. My favorite pass time was riding the ferry. I crossed on the Hyak more than once. Of all the routes Bremerton to Seattle was my favorite. So many memories.
Three of my most frequent routes were Port Townsend-Keystone, Bremerton-Seattle, and Mukilteo-Clinton. Quite often would visit my son and his fam in Bremerton, then my wife would want to do some shopping on Beacon Hill and Southcenter Mall and so instead of driving 60 miles down and around we'd take Bremerton-Seattle ferry. Only way to go; the price is competitive with the $ spent on gas to drive the 60 miles down and back up, which I always dreaded -- and the ferry ride didn't take any longer than driving down and around. Unfortunately, like most things, the pandemic took a toll on the system and now WSF is barely functioning -- with only about 2/3 of the fleet running and a dire shortage of manpower -- and a cost which almost makes it not worth it.
After nearly 52 years in the Washington State Ferries' fleet, Hyak was decommissioned late Sunday night, June 30, 2019 following its 9:05 p.m. scheduled sailing from Seattle to Bremerton.
very nice vid! If i had to go to seattle I would always time my schedule to try and ride the Hyak. It was spacious, seats were soft and cozy, and was just an overall joy to ride. the Chimacum is one of the newest in the fleet, and I was excited to ride it when it was new, but its not as "open" inside and the seats are rock hard.
@@zakroxitup lol wut. 3 years ago the viaduct was still there and the old terminal was still there, exactly like in this video. I live on Bainbridge Island, which relies on the ferry to get to and from Seattle. Ur barkin up the wrong tree bud
It’s too bad you didn’t see the deck hand that ties the ship off with a single swing of the rope and gets a full wrap and 2half hitches. You can tell he’s done it a few times.

@@colegarthwaite5633 sad. I left Cda in 2012 and my old house doubled in value. Couldnt move back now. I am in land locked northern Arizona..cheaper to live here. I hear Los Angeles and San Francisco have these same issues.
Is no one planning to mention the fact that the Foot Ferry and indoor walkways reek of human urine and body odor?? It’s Notably awful. Oh, it’s Seattle - so it’s not mentioned. I forgot.
ya sure lets just spend a billion dollars remodeling all the ferries lmao. they transport passengers well, are quite low maintenance, and can withstand 200+ mph ocean/salt water winds. The ferries are designed with functionality in mind, not beauty or form.
The video was recorded on 26 May 2019
Current price of a ticket is about 8.50, but they change it often.

Nice video. Today, Hyak is still being stored at the Kingston terminal. I'm not sure what will happen to it, if it will ever be sold or scrapped.
Thanks for shooting these great & informative videos. It's a nice simple presentation focusing on the ship, shore facilities and route.

Excellent port! Nice travel.
Thanks for video. It’s nice to see the Hyak cruising the waters with passengers.
thanks for the upload,much appreciated..
A ferry ticket to Bremerton (for a Walk-On passenger) is currently $8.65. Taking the ferry from Bremerton to Seattle is free though!
Thanks for sharing this passage on the Hyak! Have a good day! // Bertil.
Thanks for watching and commenting Bertil
2 vids in one day! You seem to be on a roll
It costs the same as a edmonds to kingston trip, and it differs on age and vehicle size
It's all different now.
I used to commute from South Seattle to Bremerton.
I remember this ferry route from the Michael Douglas movie Disclosure.
Enjoyed that scenery and thanks to the kind person who donated a ticket.
It’s never happened before but the people in Seattle were very friendly
great mate.
I remember going on that I still live there

We need more outlets!!!!
Use to ride that to the other side.
SWEEET!
That November '87 murder case of a young teenage couple brought me here !
When was this footage shot? None of this exists anymore, they built a completely new ferry terminal.
Cost is US$8.50 return.

Nice
I ride the Kalateen everyday for work.
I miss the Hyak...I wish it was still in service honestly. Cos even in its rough shape it's still a better boat than the new ones.
I agree
M/V Hyak Is retired
hey i don’t mean to be nosy but why didn’t you post this shortly after you filmed this?
I miss derek shepherd !! He had a thing for ferry boats
Nice! How was the trip to that area? I lived in Idaho just to the East of Washington State for 7 yrs but never made it to Seattle.
Seattle is definitely a nice spot to visit if you ever get a chance, would have spent more time there myself only had to be home for work
Seattle makes sandpoint idaho seem like Arizona or texas compared to NY. Its changed so much in the past 20 years.

The ferries are disgusting. They need to remodel and rebuild them. It feels like a mens locker room. Sweaty and stale.

There are some newer remodeled ones. They just dont want to dump a bunch of tax payers money all at once
Finally. TRUTH. The foot ferry smells like human urine. But people just don’t talk about it! Why?
@@prettyprudent5779 That’s so true 😂 I’m not sure why though.
