"This is the sinking of the MV Twin Capes Ferry. She sunk at the Del-Jersey-Land Reef off the coasts of Delaware, New Jersey, and Maryland. She was 26 nautical miles offshore in 120 feet of water. She will now become a huge artificial reef. The Coleen Marine crew did the sinking and we watched from the workboat."

Is it just me? It’s a strange feeling for an inanimate object and I find this incredibly emotional. She’s spent her entire life supporting her builders, passengers and crew in so many ways and even in death she’ll be supporting so much life. God bless her and thank you.

Not sure, I imagine all those nooks and crannies and railings and windows and doors are a much more appealing environment for a reef to form on then a smooth hull. Fish need holes to dive in to evade predators, predators need holes to look in for fish, coral needs surfaces it can latch onto to grow, etc etc.

They made such a big deal of this vessel when it was refurbished(?). It was pretty nice, with food courts, elevators, sweeping staircases. I was on it one time quite by chance, and I thought it was unfair to the other passengers on the other ferries. If the whole fleet would have been like the Twin Capes, it would have been nice. But probably very expensive.

  • @veteranheavyequipmechanic4990

Before these ships are sunk as reefs they undergo an extremely thorough cleaning and removing contamination inside and out. The reason they're sunk rather than sold for scrap is 1)there are no shipbreaker yards in the US. 2)shipbreaking is very expensive and with scrap metal so far down it's not profitable. 3)since there's no breaker yards in the US they're sent to countries with little to no EPA regulations so all the contaminants are dumped directly into the ocean. So after these large vessels have outlived their useful service this is the cleanest way and let the hull continue to serve a purpose for years. There are videos of the extensive decontamination the USS Oriskney had to undergo before being sunk off the coast of Florida.

If it's shallow enough, this would be an interesting dive spot. #5; who decides what and where scuttling holes are placed? Engineers? It would seem that knowledgeable people could have had the ship sinking fairly level 🤔

She was dangerous. If you look at her and compared it to the other ferries that run between Cape May and Lewes Del, her superstructure is much larger. This did this to add luxury without adding power or steering. This made her "sail" in even a moderate breeze and difficult to control when docking. She wound up hitting the rocks that protect the Ferry Terminals several times. She was a death trap waiting to happen

Yeah, you have to blow a couple holes in the bottom, stem and stern, so it will settle upright, otherwise, the heavy superstructure will always roll and capsize the boat. It's more fun, more accessible, and safer to explore an upright vessel, I've found. If it's upside down, it's dark and less accessible.
