How To Make Your Car Wink (Pop-Up Headlight Mod)

- I wired my car's popup headlights to wink, every time on command, and this video shows you how to do it! This method of winking doesn't require you to unplug a headlight motor and allows you to operate the headlights as normal, until you want to wink. This should work on any car with pop up headlights that are controlled with individual motors, including Miatas, 240sxs, RX7s, supras, and more.

It took me a year to get around to this after my last comment. The most difficult bit was finding the bloody wires after I fed them through the grommet in the firewall. After that easy especially since you'd already identified the correct wire to cut and splice the switch wiring into. Thanks, works great.

Back in the day I used to see people that had a switch that used to make it wink back and forth continuously on each side it was awesome and the late night car shows
Gonna do this once I get a Porsche 944.
It'd look hilarious because the 944 looks a little shell-shocked with the headlights up.
Just a heads up the 944 lights have a single motor that moves both lights so you can't do it this same way. Best of luck though!
Sweet video. I tried this on my 91 miata but it works opposite of winking. When the lights are up and flip the switch in the car nothing happens but if i flip the switch and then turn the lights on, one stays down while the other pops up. Then flipping the switch again the second one pops up.

I cut my ground on that side but the headlight still goes up and down, any idea why? I have a 91 Miata

Does it matter what wire you use to extend it to the interior?
Just make sure it's approximately the core is the same thickness (slightly thicker is preferable) as the wire you're splicing into

That’d be neat, but a lot of custom fabrication work. I haven’t seen pop up conversions on any modern car, so you’d be one of the first. That’d be a project for you to figure out on your own!
If I ever get an NA MX5 or any car with pop up headlights this is the first thing I'll do

I drilled a hole and the switch has a threaded collar that holds it on!

It can be done with any pop ups that have individual motors per headlight

every miata can do the wink, when the lights are down, press the button as the lights are coming down, double press the button(basically turn them off and on again) then bam ur car winks, u dont need no mod or damage the OEM wiring.
That doesn’t work nearly as reliably as this
Why not just unplug the pop up motor on one side...
Your light on that side would be permanently up or permanently down until you plugged it back in.. this allows full control from inside the car
