- In honor of the great Toots Thielemans, here are his performances and chats with Dave on Late Night:
1. August 11, 1982: Toots performs "Sophisticated Lady" and chats with Dave. He then plays "Bluesette" with the band during the commercial break. Upgraded here from a better video source.
2a. July 13, 1983 Rehearsal/British profile; Steve Khan subs for Hiram Bullock, and Neil Jason for Will Lee. Video borrowed, with gratitude, from here: • Paul Shaffer with Toot...
2b. July 13, 1983 (aired July 27, 1983): Toots performs "I Do It For Your Love" then chats with Dave. Plus the band plays "Bluesette" (without Toots) during the break. Another upgrade from a better video source.
3. May 9, 1984: Toots performs "Bluesette."
4. August 19, 1985: Toots performs "Leave a Tender Moment Alone" and then chats too briefly with Dave.
[August 27, 1992: Toots sat in with the band throughout the show, but there were no full performances on-air, so it's not included here.]
Seeing him perform here brings me to tears, happy to see and hear him, sad to know he is gone. RIP, Toots.
This is a gem for those of us who continue to celebrate Toots' astonishing virtuosity.
Wow... what a remarkable person. How incredible it must have felt to be sitting in Letterman's seat listening to Toots play.
Toots is a treasure I met him almost 20 years ago at the Catalina Bar and Grill were he not only sounded great he was a very sweet person and a great sense of humor and on a side note I went to Steve Kahn’s website dropped him a thank you note and within 24 hours he responded back with the kindest note. Not only great musicians But even better people. God bless you Both.
i also saw him perform at the Catolina 30 years ago
Great video footage of my favorite Harmonica player Toots Thielemans! His playing influenced me to take up the Chromatic Harmonica! My Dad-Ralph Frederico Jr. also a musician and original member of "The Virtues" 1959 Gold record song "Guitar Boogie Shuffle" met Toots many years ago in Philadelphia, PA. I never got the opportunity to meet Toots. So sad he is gone but will never be forgotten. A true legacy. As Quincy Jones said of Toots "His (Toots) playing is somewhere between a tear and a smile" "R.I.P. Toots and Dad".
One of the most evocative musicians ever.
❤️
The most gorgeous harmonica player of all time. So missed, but thankfully he left behind such a wealth of recordings for us. And then to find this...thankful every day for CZcams.
👍🙂‼️Toots and Stevie Wonder both are the most incredible players!!! Hauntingly beautiful!❤
Can you believe this was on a major network talk show? Look who’s put on these days, so-called “musicians.”
Pure Gold & thanks for posting Don! Tears in my eyes now! All those fond fond memories of Friends & Family who are lost & gone
Happy 100th birthday, Toots! Blowing up a storm in heaven since 2016.
I saw him live in SanDiego knew ive never get to see him again he was 87,Im so bleesed i got to see him before he passed. Was a restaurant so i was like 10 feeet away from him RIP
Thanks from a Belgian, how I long for the days Real music was appreciated and we had proper late night talkshow hosts, not the puppets that are in place now...
He has to be the best ever. Stevie is really close, but Damn, Toots is out of this world.
I would say Stevie is out of this world. He is a phenomenon. I am a huge fan of Toots. This comparison is unnecessary and insane.
Quincy Jones adored him and they were very good friends. He was still active when he was 90, sitting in a wheelchair
Thank you for sharing! Toots is forever in my heart
Beautiful musician and human being.
I sincerely hope that Toots also enjoyed lots of cats and shopping carts.
I still love his midnight cowboy song, the ULTIMATE BEST OF THE BEST!
5:07 -- The "Sesame Street" harmonica lick was from Toots, who got paid 47 dollars for it (18:50)! What a legend.
he said it was one of the greatest things happening to him, having millions of kids hear it and being tought by sesame street
$47.00!?!?!?! Are you serious??!
6th listening and watching of "Leave a Tender Moment Alone", gobsmacked at the Maestros on that stage, especially Toots and his magic harmonica.
Damn, this was a special man.
Thank you for doing this!
Amazing
Saw him perform live in Cleveland, Ohio at Nighttown .... Absolute gem.....RIP, Master....
When I hear Toots I always get chicken skin. I regret not going to a concert of him which was about 45 minutes from my hometown. Later he passed away. There’s no one who can copy them. He was unique like we all are of our own. Fortunately we are blessed with our Hermine Deurloo from the Netherlands. She made an album named “Riverbeast” and I was there during her short Riverbeast tour with the Big Apple band which the famous American Steve Gadd played drums on the album and during the tour. It was magical.
Fantastic Don Giller!! Looks and sounds great!
Love Steve Khan's guitar work on Bluesette! Paul and Steve had a great jazz rhythm, too.
J'aime bien quand il dit excuse for my Belgian accent
..thanks for this upload, Don ! ..especially for including the "jam session" of the band, from 21:12 - 23:13 ! (..I'm guessing that was Steve Khan on guitar....I saw a face around 10:02, and it looked like Steve...) ..I first became familiar with Toots through his haunting performance of the 'Midnight Cowboy' theme, then through his haunting performance of 'Nice To Be Around' from 'Cinderella Liberty' (featuring Marsha Mason and James Caan)... ..and, I know I've heard 'Bluesette' before....but I'm not sure when/where/nor how (..movie..? ..television..? radio..?) ..plus, I never knew the title of that song until I saw your upload.. ..I was in a 'jazzy' mood tonight, and you came through ! ..Thanks again, Don ! 😎
Maybe you heard Bill Evans’ recording of it.
I don't think they would play live jazz music on the late night tv-show today. It was possible 40 years ago... but times change!!
I wish I had picked up the harmonica much earlier in life. Bravo Toots.
27:40 begins one of the most beautiful numbers I've ever heard. You've been warned.
“Leave a tender moment alone”, worth watching a video of him and Billy Joel perform it
Wow!
God..Beautiful! Never appreciated him more..
I love Toot's music...he was such a great musician.
Such a humble guy. Miss you Mr. Thielemans
His Playing is somewhere between a tear & a smile
Du talent à l'état pure
Complètement
Never knew an harmonica could sing Billy Joel but that all I hear when he plays , leave a tender moment alone.
Wow....so good.
Very nice.
I play Chromatic Harmonica because of this mam.He is The Father of Modern Chromatic Harmonica. He is sorely missed.
Nice!
The song from the
Getaway",my favorite!
music god
the master at improvising and not easy, he must have a perfect pitch
I'm playing with my Trumpet this melodies Bluesette
how sweet was that guy .... nice as fuck man
5:20-5:47: "Sesame Street"
I can hear the Belgian accent (sounds French to me) in his harmonica enunciation.
图茨太棒了!
Toots was so modest, he did not like talking about himself, this made it difficult to interview him. He worked on THE 1972 FILM THE GETAWAY WITH COMPOSER QUINCY JONES, AND CARY GRANT'S LAST FILM WALK DON'T RUN WHICH THE MUSIC WAS WRITTEN BY THE GREAT QUINCY JONES.
I'll bet folding money he was a great whistler
❤
Didnt he do Once Upon a Time in the West!!??
I once heard that was made with a synth
Shades of Pat Metheny
'82 and '83 the exact same interview questions, sorta lame. A great musician, he deserved more than that...
Sadly Jazz wasn't quite as popular as it had been 20 or so years earlier.
Most folks had an ear for Rock
Did he ever jam with stevie wonder ?
Yes. Google.
what is the tune at 6;23? I can't remember it's name!
Bluesette

6:26 what is that piece
Nobody reads my descriptions.
Bluesette
No homage is enough for Toots. Maybe for how he was as a person. Apparently warm, happy and humble. A great person and friend musicians say. But as a musician and about his virtuosity, never enough. His secret is his knowledge of harmony. And the chromatic harmonica is a single note kind of instrument. Maybe from his guitar skills. One story by the humble Toots is that he met Louis Armstrong ( omigod ) near Bird's place and calledbthe young Toots as the bop guy.
@@dongiller I did
give me another video with this many likes to dislikes.... 304:0 ill wait
genius a free spirit....
