    I've raised bass in aquariums for the last 50 years. Even bred both largemouth and peacocks. I thought your video was interesting but a few points I'd make. Number one, start with a small bass. Maybe 2 inches or less. They are more likely to accept being in a glass enclosure than a larger fish. I've tried to keep a larger bass and it's always the same. They constantly hit the glass sides of the aquarium and as a result, they bruise their lower jaw allowing a fungus. The fungus will kill them. A small bass learns to accept the confinement and even when it grows larger, it will not keep testing the glass limitations. You mentioned never letting them go back into the wild, but you didn't offer a reason. The reason is they grow dependent on you providing food. You can raise a small bass in a 55 gallon. Better to start them in a larger tank, but a 55 will work. I've had both largemouth and peacock bass spawn in a 125 gallon tank - and raise their fry.

      When it comes time , just put him in the tank with your other fish if you can't find a home 4 them, depending on sizes , in less than 5 minutes he will be the new owner of that home , with zero renters. JK. They are fun hearty fish to keep, smart. Just get a juvy ,4 to 6 inches. Older ones don't do well with the shock and get depressed and die, knowing what life they could've had.

    Bass are awesome fish to keep. I have a 275GL IBC Tote that I keep bass, crappie, misc panfish, bullheads, yellow perch, white perch, Creek chubs and brown trout in for bait in the summer time. I take care of them fall through spring. I've had as many as 80 fish in the tank at one time over the winter. The perch even laid eggs, although the other fish ate alot of the eggs. It was fun learning the habits and feeding of the bass as well as the other species. You are right about having big fish in their with the bass. They'll pretty much takeover, so I kept a couple 2lb bullheads in there to keep everyone in check. Feeding them all was not cheap, so I'd do a mixture of a couple dozen minnows sometimes, freeze dried meal worms and night crawlers. Alabama Bass CZcams channel is nice to learn about keeping bass. He has a couple back yard in ground ponds as well as a 300GL aquarium he uses to keep bass and other fish. He puts thousands of minnows in the ponds to feed the fish and the feeding videos are awesome. Look forward to future videos on your bass

    For the record I chose the largemouth both times and I can't wait to make a backyard pond, gonna need to figure out a way to keep it heated or move it into an indoor Aquarium because New England's winter can be a bit brutal more often than not

    I have 5 Florida largemouth that are about 4 inches and 15 3 inch bluegills. 5 bass are in one 500 gallon tank and the bluegills in another 500g tank. I feed them live minnows two different types, pellets, and I have a worm farm to breed worms for daily snacks.

    Very informational video but as far as food goes I'd try to get them on pellets as it has essential nutrients and vitamins for a healthier fish and hikari massivore delite is my personal favorite

    Very cool! I have three Black Sea Bass. They're approaching 1foot and I'm stuck deciding between a tank upgrade or food. Do the largemouth taste different if a majority of their growth was bound to an aquarium.

    Have you considered keeping any of the Darter species? There are some that are absolutely beautiful in their colors and markings!

      I actually had some as a kid, rainbow darters if i remember right. I got them from a runoff creek that was drying up and had them for about two years. They are neat to watch amd like to swim against filter current bur mostly hang out on the bottom.

    @bonniew1992 Před 4 lety

    Nicely done, Zac. Only thing I can think of that you missed is the option of getting your pet bass, bluegills, and other native fish from someone like Jonah's Aquarium if the laws in your area don't permit removing them from the wild or they aren't in your area. As always, check with your local laws first, though.

    • @SCFishKeeping
      @SCFishKeeping  Před 4 lety +1

      I agree!! That's one of the things I want to show with these videos. Native fish can be just as colourful and personable as any of the tropical stuff
