Dzia dzia who was raised near the Baltic, always put his mashed potatoes on the side. Tata, from eastern Poland, liked chunks of potato. Oh, I remember how sweet Babcia's beet soup was, even though she did not sweeten it. Mama just gave me a container of shredded beets the other day. I will be just as happy as you are when I taste my final effort. Another great recipe made with stuff you have on hand and love.

I love watching your videos! My grandmother, Lena, immigrated to the United States in 1910. I grew up eating a lot of the dishes you feature in your videos. Nowadays, the only time I get to eat Polish is at Polish restaurants. My favorite is Karczma in Brooklyn, NYC.

This is so close to how my mom made it. She served it over boiled potatoes. She made the cold one in the summer. She used short ribs for the stock as my father loved to eat soup meat. Thanks for posting this one.

My Grandmother always made her beet soup with boiled potatoes and fried onions in butter. Instead of a chicken for the broth we use pork neck bones to make the broth. The last thing that was different from your version is the cream we put sour cream into ours. But I have to say that you are the first person I have seen who also does the potatoes and onions!! It just makes the soup over the top AWESOME!!! 😊❤

Oh my goodness, as soon as I saw the pink color from the cream I could taste and smell my Babcia's barszcz--I just put beets on my shopping list. Dziadzio would grow sorrel in their garden in Chicago, and I think that's what she used to make her soup tangy...I've never been able to find it in the stores here in Iowa, so she always told me to use a little lemon juice instead. At the beginning of the summer, I found sorrel plants for sale at our local nursery and planted one in my garden--I'm excited to see if it comes back in the spring! Dziekuje for sharing your cooking, I watched your videos all weekend!

    Hello from Bangalore, India.
I just chanced upon this video and am so glad I did.
We eat lots of beet - beet root as we call here - but not as soup usually. Mostly we dice them and make a side dish out of beets. I love beets and also the beet leaves which I use in salads when I can get them.
I have been trying beet soup recently and my last attempt was ok, but not motivating enough to try again.
This one looks so inviting. And to eat with mashed potatoes would for me be a new way.
Can I blend the shredded beets as well and make a smooth soup? Would appreciate your take on it.
Thank you for the recipe and a very interesting video.

Anna, Have you ever made Hot green bean soup with bacon, flour and vinegar, My Mother made this and I never got her recipe. Please let me know in your comments, or make this in one of your new shows. I know she fried the bacon crisp, Use the flour and bacon grease to make a rue. Had the green beans in the pot cooking, would add the bacon, rue and would add the vinegar to taste.

  • @lindagatelytidwell2389

Canned beets are ruby red and the cooking juices are sealed right away.
My Polish grandma never made beet anything but had a restaurant next to a factory in the USA. Called the bluebird diner back in
    Approx. 1925.
I make use of what I have. I use an immersion blender, in a soup bowl for my own supper. You can make it with more liquids of any kind. No added salt just pepper, butter and bacon grease. It is full of vitamins and stays the brightest color. I just heat it for two minutes in the microwave. Very delicious❣️🙏🕊🕊👍🏼☺️

You also preserve ALL the good nutrients in the beets if you use the fresh ones vs. canned. (Only BORSZT! They're gonna get cooked to death anyway. Here in NY? The most easily accessible is made by MANISHEVITZ. It comes in quart sized, GLASS bottles. It's OK but very, very, "VINEGARY" (White of course.) and kinda salty too. Only beets and liquid are visible in the bottle.

Canned beets taste like the color brown...💩 Oh I see!!😆😅
I have only had pickled beets before, which I really don't care for. I'm sure that roasted beets are probably quite different. Interesting recipe, not sure if it's for me, but maybe it will change my mind about beets!!
Take care! Really enjoy your videos and listening to you and Mark joke around!
Does Mark ever cook at home?
Or does he only serve cheese curds and brats from the Kwik Trip? 😁 "Keep er movin'!!"
