    Excellent video. My 2018 2500 had been using coolant for a while and progressively getting worse than in the last few days you could hear a gurgling noise From the coolant bottle exhaust gas was pumping back into the coolant. And there was no heat coming or very little heat from the cabin heater. Plus overheating of engine quickly.Sure tell that the egr is not dying but DEAD!!
    Pulled it off and replaced with instant relief to the engine. Test drive for an hour last night and seems good.
    One tool that I made was a 15 mm box end I heated up and put about a 60 degree bend in it to reach the nut that you used a short 15 mm for.
    The 2 - 15 mm at back were simple just used a 15 mm deep impact socked and a short 1/2” ratchet.
    Great video. And thanks

    I highly recommend purchasing new gaskets. I did this service at 158000. All my gaskets had shrunk and were in need of replacing. If you’re gonna tackle this, don’t short yourself by trying to use old gaskets. A leak isn’t worth all the work you’re gonna do!

    One note you didn't mention, you need to vacuum fill the coolant system using shop air. If you don't you run the risk of cracking the egr cooler. EGR coolers leak internally, so you will be sucking coolant into the engine without any visible signs of a leak. I work at a RAM center. Was curious how other people do the procedure so I found this video on my free time. lol Also you need to pull the egr valve off and clean it. That is on the intake side. You pull off the motor with the four screws and you can take the valve spring out like any other valve spring with keepers using a socket and hammer. That valve gets gunked up pretty good.

    Good video. Very informative. I saw another similar video and a point was made about refilling the coolant after re- assembly. There's a sort of check valve or opening sealed with an allen head? It was to ensure the cooler was completely filled with coolant prior to engine start.
    My truck is a 2018 2500 so I'm not looking to do this for a while but want to learn as much as possible.
    Thanks for the video.

    • @HighMileageHelper
      @HighMileageHelper  Před 5 lety +2

      Phil Edgar yes that is an excellent point! Thank you thank you!! I unfortunately didn’t share that in the video😔 What I told my friend to do is allow time for the engine to draw from the reservoir and after a week or so, refill the tank to the proper level. If you idle the truck at an incline it will work itself out quicker with the air escaping as new coolant is drawn inside. That was simply to avoid having to mess with that allen head. He isn’t one to even touch that, so I gave the least hands on approach. I have done both ways and they both work. I really appreciate you commenting! Thanks! I’m trying to push out as much quality content as things come up on the truck. Keep rollin!

    • @HighMileageHelper
      @HighMileageHelper  Před 5 lety +12

      Joshua Cripe I really appreciate the support man!
      On this truck both cleanings were done at 205k (roughly) for both the Cooler and the Valve. They both definitely needed it bad. I would say the cooler is the bigger cause for concern though. If there isn’t ease of flow in that cooler, it will eventually cause major damage to the engine or simply self destruct with too much pressure built up.
      The cooler is first in line and then the valve is down wind. If the cooler is plugged, you’re toast right there. That’s hours ripping it all apart(at least for me). If the valve is stuck shut, you could potentially take it off and clean it out in 20-30min and be out on the road. So in my opinion the valve is the after thought to the cooler.
      For all the times I’ve done it I would say 100k is long enough under normal circumstances. I also would want to factor in to the equation how many engine hours you have on the truck. If you idle a bunch then maybe cut the 100k number down. I sleep in my backseat when I’m on the road. I run my truck through the night often and even though I’m not putting miles on, the system is still being worked. I guess one size doesn’t fit all. Sorry I can’t give a more dialed in recommendation!

    I pulled this stuff today. Egr valve... throttle valve... egr crossover tube ... egr cooler ...lol... it's not going back on soon ;-) The only speed dump was the 15mm nut on the inside stud for the cooler I didn't have a hard time getting the socket to line up but I had to work the ratchet handle with my fingers then the nut fell off into the abyss I spent 1hr looking for it and ended up going into my nuts and bolts bin to find a replacement which I found an identical one . During the removal I was also installing the new parts I think I could pull the entire system in 2hrs and put it back in the same the soot removal 4-6 hour soak and flush...lol... I made the mopar egr cleaner mistake servicing the valve years past that shit isn't very effective. But a shop charges thousands to do this service and it's only 4 hrs of labor plus the wash time which most shops only soak about 2 hrs...lol... so that thousands for 6 hrs work ...
    I'll clean my stuff up put it in a box and clean the dpf and cat and sit them in the shed if I sell it I can put it back on but the truck can idle all day long without this crap on it and runs better.

      @HighMileageHelper  Před 5 lety +1

      brandon dean so I checked with my 2013+ guys(who have put crazy miles on like me) and they said that making sure you stay topped off on def is critical. If you let it go too far down the debri inside on the bottom can be sloshed around and get sucked into the line causing problems. My one friend who’s truck I worked on in this video says that he refills his tank at 3/4 left at the lowest, that way there’s less movement at the bottom of the tank for things to get agitated. I hope this helps! He’s had zero problems with 230k following that always getting the newest def possible.

    How long did u let the cooler and valve dry after cleaning

    • @HighMileageHelper
      @HighMileageHelper  Před 3 lety

      Hey friend! Probably 15minutes. The heat from the engine is going to evaporate any water moisture still inside. I’ve never had a problem each time I’ve done it like that

    Did you have to drain your coolant before disassembling the cooler?

    • @HighMileageHelper
      @HighMileageHelper  Před 3 lety +1

      No, because it’s at the top of the system I simply cover any vulnerabilities (turbo) and let the little coolant that does pour out go wherever it wants and then clean it up afterwards. I’m sure there’s a more responsible way to do it but for me it’s. It worth the headache and trouble to me.
      Hope all goes well! God bless! 😎

    How do you know when the EGR cooler needs to be cleaned ?

    • @HighMileageHelper
      @HighMileageHelper  Před 4 lety

      Busy Beezz I believe Cummins/Ram says 75k but it’s good to do as often as possible. You’ll see an increase in mileage. So on the other end of that, your mileage may drop down a bit and that may be your cue to go clean it. Just my thoughts! Hope it helps.

    Took mine off to do that same thing on my 2018 3500. Couldn't get it back on and said fuck it. Threw it in the trash. As well as the DPF filters.

    BS when you can see day light , or a high powered light through it it is clean. Just cleaning the last 1/4" does next to nothing.

    This video would be 10 minutes shorter if you didn't keep showing the bolts, over and over.
