I remember that day. We had the same weather in Oklahoma. It was super nice and then 16 deg for two days. You got the snow in Tennessee. I have a couple Nucs I’m nursing through winter. I'm trying to overwinter nucs for the first time this year and have already lost one, I have them in 4 - 5 frame nucs (1 deep box +1 medium 5 frame above) and 2 DN's (1/2 the deep ten frame box + 4 frame boxes above.). I like your set-up. Gives me hope for the weakest nuc that I have.

Kamon...with that liquid in the hives during this time of year with large temperature fluxuations within 24 hours, how do you prevent the jars from spilling their content into the hives and adding a lot of moisture into the hive? The thermal expansion and contraction of the air inside the jars will end up sucking air in when it gets cold, then as the day warms up the air expands and pushes out the syrup and spilling into the hive.
I am actually going to be watching and seeing if that happens. Also, this prosweet is literally the thickness of honey so it won't add any moisture to the hive just more feed. I am testing this out and I don't recommend everyone engaged in these shenanigans

I was wondering if you would give a video on your top cover and the piece of insulation because from what I understand aren’t you supposed to have more ventilation in the top of hive to allow hot air to escape in winter to stop condensation? I really need to understand what I need to do in wintering colonies here in the south. I live in mid Alabama which is not much different from your climate. Thanks for your education.
To late for me to do this but I would like put my nucs against one another for warm. The nucs are to far away from each other to slide together. Instead of moving them miles away for a couple weeks to force them to reorient themselves can I just move them after a long cold spell. Do they reorient after being stuck in the hive after long periods of cold? I'm in north west Tennessee.
We don't have so many virus issues in my area here in Australia because one source of honey is tea tree and it is anti bacterial, anti fungal and anti virus, perhaps if you are having virus issues a few plantings of the prettier varieties of tea tree might help. Will tea tree varieties grow in an area that gets in the single digits? From what I understand prior to varroa we had very little virus related issues.
There are varieties that grow from way down on the coast to way up in the mountains, you have a mild climate so they should do well, talk it over with your nursery man. @@kamonreynolds
Kamon...also...with the aluminized bubble wrap being not water nor air permiable how do you make sure it doesnt get condensation on the underside? seems there is little ventilation in this setup
Hey Ray I don't use anything for my clothes. If they get Propolis on them they are staying that way. Laurel is often not happy with my nice clothes getting stained but I think she has nearly given up at this point.
It does echo. Probably twice this year i have gotten stung that way. I don't swell anymore and I am comfortable doing this I don't recommend it and my wife thinks I am crazy
I see one problem with the double bubble. I suppose Ian Steppler doesn't have to deal with the SHB's when using it. It looks to lay so close to the tops of the frames that it give SHB's a good place to hide. Just my observation of this video.

I use plastic peanut butter feed jars, instead of glass and metal. And a screen on the feed hole is nice too.

If we could overwinter nucs in Canada..I'm sure you can..this week we had -25c..weather. our nucs are doing good.

Did this setup survive winter?
It did both sides! One side was very string and the other needed some brood added to give it a jump start. however, both queens did great!

I liked the idea of using insulation foil. If 5 nuc s are pushed together would you insulate top and sides of the cluster of Nucs. Even underneath?
