Hey when it comes to wheels if you like the look and it they work that’s all you need
I’ve had H&R and eibach Springs, feal 441 coilovers and airlift 3p bags. Springs are perfect for someone who wants a small drop and only daily’s there car and not looking at spending a lot of money. Coilovers are good for daily with occasional canyon/track days. Bags are perfect for someone who wants a comfortable ride quality and likes the parked slammed looks. But with bags comes with more issues.
Enkei’s are considered what people call “REAL” wheels. They look generally nice and are very well made and for the price you can’t beat them especially with how they perform !!!! I myself have NT03’s 18X9.5 +27 offset powder coated teal on my white 2019 wrx only other wheels I would consider are Rays GramLights for the performance and price.
So true. It's the "Hot Boys" who look down on it for not being expensive 3-piece wheels.
@@CarsWithJR 3 piece wheels are far too expensive, I'd prefer to grab a set of Option Labs or Gram Lights, on the fence which to get atm lolz, leaning towards the 716's from Option Labs lol.
@@Sphoxros I haven’t personally found any 3 pieces that look good to me
@@AlicesMazduhs I ended up grabbing a set of Ray's, Gram Lights, 57CR's in a Gloss Black, +38 offset, 18x9.5", looks amazing :D lol. So many ppl comment on how the wheels look on the car, didn't expect that :O.
@@Sphoxros ooo on what car?
I’d watch an hour long vid if you made one 👌👌
Man i can’t even explain to you how much your wrx and sti have been such an inspiration and you’re my go to for information especially on things like this I’m such a noob but you’ve done so much to help please keep up the work
I hated springs. Even a reputable brand such as Swift (Spec-R's) on my OEM struts for my VA. It was stupid bouncy. But people think bouncy is cool.
When it comes to adjusting coilover dampers, DO NOT, repeat DO NOT max out the settings to full hard. Hard does not equate to better handling. Also DO NOT start at full hard and work your way down. Do the opposite, start full soft and work your way up until the car's dampers can recover quickly as possible without bouncing.
I just did Swift springs with Bilstein B8's on my 19 sti this weekend. The ride is smoother than stock and it's not even close. I had previously done these springs (sti Swift's) on my 16 wrx limited with the stock dampers and it was a little bouncy.
Your problem was doing springs and not the dampers, like you were 16 driving the Accord you inherited from Mom. You need dampers that will work well with the lowered spring and won't be so pre-loaded like running half OEM.
I agree, if your car is so bouncy that the wheels are jumping off the pavement.. your car isn't gonna handle well at all unless your on perfectly smooth roads. But having well-setup, compliant suspension, will mean your tires maintain contact with the road.. giving you great handling👍
I went with Ohlins coilovers, 9kg Swift Springs, and RaceComp top hats for 15 WRX that I bought from my buddy who was going a different suspension route with his STI. The ride was super stiff at the default coilover settings (11 clicks from the stiffest setting) but night and day difference while auto crossing vs with stock suspension. I like it so far!
Things are looking good buddy!! Here in Canada I wasn't too keen on Coilovers because the adverse cold and change in temperatures, + snow/ ice, they're almost guaranteed to get seized unless you swap for winter or park for winter (boring).
Literally watching this “2 years from now” great prediction!!
It’s three years from now. Learning for my 2023 WRX. Thanks for the post!
10 seconds into the video how did he know I was watching this two years from then
"if you're watching this 2 years from now, you know what happened" bro i feel so called out
i'm on Eibach lowered springs /upgraded shocks as well which is a must .I daily my wrx and don't think i need the coil overs it's just too rough for daily driving
what shocks are you running with the eibach springs? thinking about picking up the same set up
Besides lack of grip in freezing or sub-freezing weather with a sticky, Summer tire you have to consider the chemistry of the compound itself. You better go read the safety information on your tires because if they're anything like some I've had they're going to start destroying themselves if you've driven them in that sort of temp. I think the cut off with some of mine was 29 degrees, and if the tires were ever in that sort of temperature I was supposed to not drive or stress them at all until some time had passed well above that temperature or the compound would start to come undone and then you're going to risk failure.
What would be your recommendation for a softer ride on the street. Sounds crazy but my bothers Impreza is really comfortable and it flys over bumpy roads while my wrx is throwing me all over in the seat. I need something softer for these ny roads thanks
I'm in this predicament. Commute to Baltimore city feels horrible
Grea video as always! Just swapped from Swift Springs w/STI Struts to coilovers on my 2015 WRX - NIGHT AND DAY difference. The coils are MUCH better!
Well, I was here 2 years later. Perfect timing.
_12/11/22 - 11:11 AM_
Big facts about the expensive wheels paired with cheap tires like Nankang lol.
Nigga I'm running nankang shit's straight, i bought cosmis wheels it would've been over 2k if i went with expensive tires
Watching 2 years later and still don’t know what happened 😂
I live in Taiwan and mod my '18 WRX here - and our roads are super bumpy. I own a set of coilovers from a local brand called FD Racing. In the winter I switched to some Ölins DFV's and my family hated the car. Ha. So I had to go back to the set that was a third the price. Taiwan brands make some great coilovers: BC, YSRT and FD Racing. Good prices too!
2:59 LOVE THE MUGEN LICENSE PLATE BOLTS!! I still have mine from my old car.
True story about coil overs. I had a set of bc’s and the ride was not all great and the threads got rusted, collars got seized and the ball top joints are rusted. My ST suspension however are great for the streets. I haven't tracked them yet. I also have superpro camber mounts and that's about it for now
Nice video, i’m still deciding whether to put lowering springs or coilovers on my GTI, but the cost is night and day. But at the end of the day, I think coilovers are worth it for a the long run.
It sure is, but VW 's have some really nice suspension options.
I am watching 2 year later.
HAHAH I love the cheap tire comment JR
I don’t know why I’m watching this I’m probably going to trade my sti in for a truck
I'm on same boat...
Why are you trading an STi for a truck?
spiGini ive thought about it but I don’t want that many vehicles around my house. We have too many as it is.
HiDef Fanatic I just don’t drive it. I have a work truck that’s provided to me that I can’t use outside of work. And I work too late to make good use of my car that my wife can’t drive. Like groceries or getting our kid from school. It’s just cumbersome. I could use a truck though. And my wife could at least drive it.
Just orders the factionfab f spec. Don’t track, want that look 👀 have heard good things and fairly affordable
Such a great video!!! Some funny moments too. I just picked up a 2020 STI this summer been loving it. Went from a WRX too. Keep up the good work :)
Actually watching this 2 years later in 2022 😂
Same 🤣😂
I WAS going to get a 208/2019 STI even tho they're extremely expensive where i live ($45,000 USD USED), but with all these pandemic issues the economy is just full of uncertainty so I think im going to wait to 2021 saddly, can you do an in deep review of your car? And what where your first mods when you just got the car? What are the first upgrades you should do to an STI? Those can be really fun videos to give us :)
3 months ago bought a fairly new/used RCE yellow springs 300 miles on it and haven't installed lol.
Great video Brotha. I don't know a lot about wheels but in my opinion your STI mods are very good. People. Need to stop hating on your wheels. Lol. Keep the great videos oming. I have been in this Subie community for only 2 years.
always love your videos man. keep it up!
Got the RCE yellows originally because of you. Then upgraded to coils! Both great but coilovers are the move!
Which springs do you prefer? RCE Yellows or RCE Blacks. I have Bilstein dampeners on my Sti. I want the most drop i can get. Do you think my ride quality will change or stay the same, I just don’t like the wheel gap lol but i also wouldn’t want to have a bouncy ride either.
Yellow's would suit you the best.
Hey I have FA500 coilovers that I bought for my wrx. and I also just got the sti. but the stock suspension on the STi feels so good, maybe its just me but it feels better than the coilovers. the only thing I want is to have slightly less wheel gap. In your experience just based on performance, do you like the STi Stock suspension or the FA500? Debating if I should just sell the coilovers and stick to stock suspension until I can get that performs better than stock
You shoulda mentioned roll center bump steer!!
i've commented a lot but got a daily getting aftermarket struts and springs can be a great combo that's cheaper than coil overs and ride better for some purposes
i like your rant about ppl buying cheap tires haha its overlooked by alot of ppl but it makes a huge difference with noise, traction, handling, comfort its crazy ppl dump all that money and dont buy a decent set of tires
2023. By far the most practical reason for CHEAP WHEELS. Well said sir.
I’m watching from 2 yrs from then lol
Will A good set of coil overs decrease the amount of bounce on the road from the OEM STI suspension? I would like to find some thing that lowers well without decreasing Ray quality
Good video and topic man. That wheel/tire setup is perfect! Stay safe out there.
Solid review on aftermarket coil overs versus lower springs, struts and shocks 👍. I am the other side of the coin compared to you, went with lowering springs Eibach ( 1") and Bilstein struts and shocks, which were extremely difficult to come by. OEM struts and shocks are definitely not performance grade on USDM WRX/STI, good for cruising.
Good combo!
how are these holding up? I'm debating between Bilstein's vs coilovers
@@thecarsavant I think they are fantastic. If you are happy with having a fixed ride height I cannot think of a better brand than Bilstein. Car takes corners like a dream under "spirited driving". Car reviewers liked them as well on the 2018 STI RA. Mind you I have strut tower braces front and back as well as new sways front and back as well.
2015 WRXMAN Glad to hear it! I'm currently torn between the GTworx/RCE Yellow combo vs a set of HKS Hypermax IV GT's.
Been looking at the Bilstein but sold out everywhere ! Did you get the B6 or B8?
How did u get the rims to fit so nice under the fender. I have the same rims with a 10mm spacer and it pokes out from under the fender
8:09 Did anyone else get paranoid thinking that stroller was going to roll into the lake when they let it go? 😂
What editing software do you use
Really diggin these POV videos!
NT03s are awesome looking wheels. Only downside I see with them is cleaning those little tiny nooks and crannies. lol.
Like to hear your thoughts about Coilovers vs air suspension as well.
What spring rate would you recommend for a daily driven?
Very ironic I am watching this 2 years in the future lol
Man said if you’re watching this two years from now… it’s been exactly two years
Are you running spacers?
also dude your wheels look dope! i like konig cause you can get rotary forged at an affordable price
loving daily content 😍👍
This might be a really dumb question but I’m going to reach out anyways.I just picked up a 2020 STI series white and would like to bring down the ride heigh a little. ( Seattle driving ) so just a tad since the roads here are horrible. The car comes with Blistein dampers. Think i can get away with a nice pair of lowering springs and some other goodies. Control arms, sway bar.. Just your thoughts on this... thank you
I had the RCE springs and they are a perfect drop for someone who is looking for something subtle and reduce the wheel gap. The factory Bilstein dampers will help complement these springs. With these springs and dampers, adding a rear sway bar will be a nice set-up for the street.
Yes more POV drives and Pulls too!!
When it comes to automotive youtube channels, id watch for an hour
Thanks man!
Quite a few cool WRX/STI channels from the Washington state.
I have been wanting to ask you do you use wheel spacers for your enkei? And if so does it feel different?
5mm spacers.
3 years later here
im planning to get the same wheels that you have right now thats why i asked fitment industries if they gonna fit on my sti 2016 limited they said im gonna need 12mm spacers on the front so it will clear up the front. are you using spacers to clear it up?
Yes, if you have Brembo's spacers are needed. For the NT03's you will need a 15-20mm spacer to clear 2015-2017 Brembo's.
My WRX Channel thanks for the info.
Why does the tire have two valves?
Sorry off topic, not sure if you’ve seen yet, but any thoughts on the new Tomei uel header for the WRX?
I don't think it's needed and could hinder performance and cause increased cylinder temperatures.
What's your spring rate setup for your sti ?
NT03 all the wayyy. want to get them for my wrx but idk if it'll look as good on the DMG color
Also what spring rates do you reccomend for a daily driver and partial track ?
8k front and rear.
Bilsteins on the Series.Gray only STI or does the regular WRX have them also. Mine has so many options in it I wouldn’t doubt it.
The Series Gray, Type R/A and S209 have Bilstein struts.
Anyways, the coilovers or springs is a too good options for trackdays and the race in the streets 🤟🏻 cheers from México bro 🇲🇽😎
I guess Ohlins it is!
I want to ask you if you really feel the difference putting the car Cdiff in auto minus. I tried and I couldn’t tell if it did something
And new in the channel and also new to the Subaru family, if you haven’t can you do a video explaining what the Cdiff do to the car?
Not much of a difference in normal driving. When you are going around corners hard, the car will tend to understeer less. The c.diff control the threshold of the center differential.
Do you have a link for the Escort mount? Also is it tapped into your mirror?
Yes. I got a mirror tap on Amazon. I forgot the name tbh.
You sent me a link for the tools you use . It was a power socket with different fittings. If you have any other tool suggestions to install the exhaust , j pipe and headers could you send me the links please I’m about to do my build finally with this COVID-19 issue going on. Thanks a lot man
Hey man love the build! 🔥🔥 Was wondering howd you made your license plate look down like that? Wanted mine to look like that as well 😄
What u think bout blitz coilovers?! Bout to get em for my 19 sti.
Do you like them
Your nt03, is that a +40 ? and are you running a spacers? or is that the nt03 +27
cos i heard the +40 cant clear brembos (looking for one)
did you ever change your headlight bulb? if yes how?
No, still stock.
What lip is that?
Are they also grandma compliant
You don't know the difference in terms of lap time on track between the two do you?
Hey not sure if you already answered this already before, but I'm also from the pnw. I think you used to get tuned down at surgeline. Is there any particular reason you went to brentuning other than the fact that it was a ling drive down to portland?
I’ve had my previous car tuned Surgeline on 3 different occasions. I’d rather have a dyno tune, but with the frequent mods and the drive, etuning made sense. If I add a mod, I can simply get a revision online after a few logs.
@@CarsWithJR Awesome thanks for the reply! Always enjoy your content!
those are super nice bezels. where did you obtain them? id like to get a set
What kind of license plate angle kit are you using?
bit.ly/tiltylicensepkatebracket
What bumper bezels are those?
Where do you get your hood scoop cover?
Folks complaining about Enkei NT03s like they're Drag or Rota or Ambit or any of the others need to get a grip. Like Jon Snow, they know nothing. And they'll be way better performing (even better if you get RPF1) than anything offered by the ironically named GramLight series, which are OEM heavy, if not heavier. Enkei are legit wheels. LOL, they even make some of the upgrade package OEM wheels for Subaru.
how much lower is your car compared to stock height ?
Probably about 2 inches.
Bro for real some of these people have a nice set of wheels wrapped in Federals 🤣
And they feel the need to let everyone know with bold white letters 🤮
New to the subi scene and I’m looking at purchasing some silver’s neomax coilovers on the advice of a buddy. Was wondering if you have heard of this brand? I’ve googled the brand and they look to have some good ratings the price point seems pretty good. Just wanted to get your take on them if you have even heard of that brand thanks.
I have Silver NeoMax on my 03 WRX and I like them. My buddy has fortune auto and they feel similar. Neither of us AutoX though.
where can i find that front licence plate mount ?
bit.ly/tiltylicensepkatebracket
Hey J.R. Can you give us a link for that license plate mount for the front ? I like that setup.
bit.ly/tiltylicensepkatebracket
Totally unrelated to this video, but I know your big into detailing. What do you use to clean the alcantara in the car?
Sonax Alcantara cleaner
@@CarsWithJR perfect, thanks man.
So for someone that has a 2.0i Impreza that wants to lower the ride height from stock and hopefully reduce body roll I guess the springs are a good idea? I don't track the car cause it has hamster power and it's my daily but I would like it a little lower and a bit stiffer. Also i don't have an abundance of money to spend. Are there other recommended options besides RCE Yellows or are those the best bang for your buck? Thanks in advance.
Edit: Also your wheels look great. If you're happy with them that's all that matters. I bet there are tons of people that wish they had those wheels and tires.
If you don't track the car, springs are great as long as the spring rate isn't too stiff and too low for the OEM dampers.
@@CarsWithJR Thank you. I will look into that.
@@hideffanatic2709 if I may, I ran RSR Down springs in my 2015 2.0 hatch, got rid of off throttle nose dive during gear changes with a touch of low. I would advise installing a 20mm Rear sway bar from a Crosstrek too if you haven't grabbed one already. Both are huge upgrades for the Impreza and relatively cheap.
Hey what wheel and tire size
Surprising to hear you lived here and even made tourist laps on the Nordschleife! You plan to come over once again? 🙂 Greetings from Germany! (1h from the Ring)
I really want to move back. Although, you know Germany has strict rules about modding car that I don't like but I do LOVE living in Europe. I spent too much money at the Nordschleife 😂, but I love it WAY more than any racetrack in the US.
@@CarsWithJR haha true, an STI like yours wont be possible here. At least 1 week maybe 😂
sounds like i need to check out this feal company. don't think we have them here is aus though. i jad a set of hsd on my rex. but our roads are proper trash. so went back to stock struts again with a set of standard heigh king spring. slightly stiffer rate and needed the stock heigh because... it gets taken to its natural territory ahaha. that thing has been in the air a couple times. was looking at tein flex a, but feel like theyre discontinued. only have the flex z which are a more road based one. but have heard good thins about them and about as budget friendly as coilovers get
400 per wheel is cheap?
I love Nt03.
I have the same wheels and I love em 👌
How do you feel about bc coilovers?
They have some good entry level coils.
Ohhh you spittin about the wheels!! 😅☠
