Additional review notes:
So the Pixel 7A has been getting a lot of hype being the sequel to pretty much the best midrange phone last year, the 6A.
P7A is not the only A phone you need to consider. You didnât think Samsung would miss out on this party, did you? Samsung launched their midrange just a few weeks ago, the A54
Competes with flagships for half the price
$449 vs $499
They offer a lot for that money, but they do so in very different ways
So letâs take a deeper look at the two best midrange phones of 2023. Now I say best midrange, but really, they are the best smart purchases
DESIGN
Both IP67
A54 is taller, slimmer, and heavier
A54 has plastic frame and glass front/back
P7A has aluminum frame & plastic back
Both glossy
4 colors each
A54 has SD card slot
Pixel has wireless charging
6.1â vs 6.4â
90Hz vs adaptive 120
Similar peak brightness
Super AMOLED vs OLED
Nobody comes close to samsung with displays, but if thereâs one thing pixels do well
CAMERAS
Should we even talk about megapixels?
A54 has 3 vs 2
Pixel vs A54
64MP vs 50MP
13MP ultrawide vs 12MP
Nice empty space vs 5MP macro
13MP selfie vs 32MP
SPEED
App open test
Pixel chip is much more powerful
Same as P7Pro
8 vs 6/8gb ram
128 vs 128/256gb
A54 should have a longer battery life
A54 gets 4 android versions, P7A gets 3
Both get 5 yrs of security updates
PROS: P7a
No bloatware, light pixel interface, great pixel features for calling, great camera system, faster chip, wireless charging. Basically the Pixel 7.
A54 has better display, longevity, battery life, premium glass back, and samsung features - VÄda a technologie
I'm surprised nobody mentions how plastic offers better drop protection than glass. I would like to see a comparison between the Pixel 6a and 7a in terms of modem speeds. Speed tests on both for 5G, 4G LTE and Wi-Fi.
Glass is glass and glass brakes
And plastic is cheap
Totally agreed. I'll take plastic back over the glass any time. I put a dbrand skin on it anyway and don't worry about dropping it as much. World has gone crazy
They know it! But the *rich* actually don't care
@@bekabuidze4772 but you canât argue that glass feels nicer
I mean if youâre gonna spend a thousand dollars on o phone why not get a more premium feeling
Wireless charging is literally slower than cable. How that makes one phone better than the other is beyond me.
đđđđ
reverse wireless charging - i charge buds 2 pro on the back of my Samsung phone
conviness... I like reverse wireless charging because I need to plug my while going to bed, using cable will make it full faster and affect my battery health if I don't unplug on time
This is the comparison we've been waiting for. & you're the first to do it. Thank you.
A metal frame is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more premium and important than glass back.
Amen
Unliked the video for that opinion
It's not
Neither matters to me since I'll have a case on itđ
â@@dipta1987 you're not a very logical person are you?
Hi Mike, great video (as always). I chose Samsung mainly because of its global availability. I don't understand why the Pixel is so limited in availability. I think it's sold in a maximum of 20 countries... and where I live, importing a Pixel is a complete madness. You end up paying the price of an S23 or iPhone 14 for a $499 device. See you next time, cheers!
Iya anjing bener, beli midrange harga flagship jadinya
Which country are you talking about?
â@@prathameshrathi3866 Burundi đ
Even in a country like Hungary it's a fucking disaster to buy a pixel or iPhone you end up paying way more than you would if you lived in the US for example
â@Dhirar Faisal Fajri everywhere in SEA except singapore
Hey Mike, love your videos. I was thinking if you could compare the battery between these two phones plus the charging speed? Let's say 0-80% on their max charging wattage? Thanks dude.
Your videos are great. Glad to see you back., âșïž
Heck yes another đ great video
Great review Mike âšïžđ very insightful
Excellent commentary. Very helpful information for people who are trying to make a purchasing decision. Thank you
First, I bought a Pixel 7a to replace my Pixel 6 because it was supposed to have a better cell reception, and fingerprint scanner. Plus, face recognition to boot! Well, I paid $450 for it, and I personally didn't see that improvement, and the face recognition fairly often said, not enough light. So, I started checking out the A54, and found one on Amazon during Prime Day for $328 with a written free return. I jumped on it, and was very surprised, in a good way. It's not as speedy, but it is very fluid and enjoyable to use. Geekbench 6 results were 23% slower in single thread, and only 13% slower in multi-threading, but in real world feedback I don't feel it at all. It unlocks on command every time, has a brighter screen that is very aesthetic and just offers a reliable feel every single time I use it. Overall, it's a joy to use, and I do not miss the Pixel's extra horsepower at all.
What would you recommend pixel 6 or a54?
@@usmanejaz7399 I stand by my original comment, and that was the A54. I still enjoy using it, and the better signal reception is confidence inspiring. Also, it unlocks every single time.
@@scottt7400 thanks mate

Exactly the video I was looking for!
Great video! I choose Samsung because the availability to get it in my country. Pixel isn't available in my country and importing it would cost me almost double of the original price.
I always love your reviews Mike! Love the vibe your videos give! You deserve way more subs! Dude is grossly underrated.
I'd like to see the Pixel 7a compared to the Galaxy S22. The previous generation flagship is starting to see some very good clearance deals now; and with prices roughly matching the new midrange, I think they'd be an interesting comparison.
I personally like the design of the SG A54 way better. I find the Pixels too narrow and long. Also, better battery and availability. No contest for me. Great review, Mike
Great comparison brotherâ€
I prefer A54, SD card support, better battery-life, great screen & OS updates
also wireless charging on pixel 7a is a feature but most reviewers noted that its slow
A54 has better repairability too.
â@@Colonel_Flandersi doubt that pixels are often praised for their easiness to repair, especially the screen 0 screws just heat and pull it. No wonder they have a self repair program with iFixit that supports all phones up to the 2017 Pixel 2 (other brands self repair programs are often only for their newest phones)
nice camera comparison , also incllude night time shots as well
I have A54 for 2 months now and its great. Being in the UK i got 8gb version and saved 50 quid through my employer scheme and got samsung ear buds free, which was handy. I cannot be bothered with most if these reviews comparing a phone with a more expensive version. If you pay more then you expect a better phone.
Why does everybody hate the macro lenses? I had to buy a set of lenses to use macro, and macro is the only one that's worth using.
The fisheye is useless because there's so much distortion. The wide angle is fine, but it's not worth carrying an extra lens; I only use the one built into my new phone once in a while for to get all of something in a picture from close quarters. Landscapes get lost in it.
The macro, I can use to read microscopic text on packaging, get super close to bugs to better identify, get some really nice and soft ambient photos for my desktop background, etc. There's so many uses.
On budget and midrange phones macro lenses are just a way to make it seem like it has more cameras. Usually they are terrible quality and useless, the ultra wide lenses often take much better quality macro shots (that's what's done on flagships) no wonder they only put them on cheap phones and put telephotos (which are way more useful) on the more expensive phones
Let me guess, he doesn't say which one is the best at the end.
Nope, he leaves it up to the viewer to decide
How can he there are serious differences. SD card, wireless charging, size, camera quality....
what is not mentioned regarding the battery is the wireless in on the Pixel7a but it only approved wired chargers can be used on it. It only takes PD USB 2.0 and above. also has to be used with a PD approved power brick.
No brainier for me, because I select a phone with a micro SD memory extension. It is also cheaper.
For your next video in one month: can you also compare the 7a with the 6a? The lower price makes the 6a quite interesting, but is the 7a worth the additional few hundred dollars?
I think a good comparison to the Pixel 7a would probably be the Nothing Phone (1). It'll be interesting to see what the Nothing Phone (2) brings to compete with the Pixel 7a.
Problem is Nothing phone 2 is priced as the Pixel 7, not the 7a. Wildly different pricepoint (of, for me $200 difference is enough to say no, no matter how better a phone is).
I like the Pixel phone, but I had to buy the A54 because there is no warranty for Pixel in Sri Lanka, and the signal coverage in our country is really bad. Pixels have signal issues, so if I bought a Pixel, I might end up with a phone that can't even make a phone call. Nowadays, 1 USD equals 320 Sri Lankan rupees, so I would have to pay 320 times the dollar amount. If there is no warranty, I would end up losing a lot of money. The Pixel is a great phone that offers premium features, a great software experience, and a better camera.
Same goes for Greece, there's no warranty here for Pixel either and the Pixel devices are not supported by our mobile network providers. So, I will go for the A54 even though Pixel 7a is objectively the better device.
Very nice comparison videođ
I Think the only thing I'd like to know about the 7a is how the wifi connectivity is. I've had 4a, 5a and 6a. All of them seemed to drop the wifi or unable to access the wifi even though it's connected at some point so it would be nice if you did a review on that âșïž
Got the 7a and the wifi is great. My router is upstairs and I always have full bars. No frame drops whatsoever.
the wifi connectivity is amazing on my phone. I think your wifi router sucks, if you had problems with that many phones..
Both wifi as well as mobile network connectivity is good on my 7A. You need to change your router and get a good quality router.
@@Iinustechtips my other phones and devices don't have this issue. Just my Google phones do...
@@nilimachakraborty don't have the 7a so I don't really have a say in the regard. However my other phones and devices don't have this issue besides my Google phones.
As someone who used both latest generation samsung and google phones, get samsung if hardware is what you want (best battery life, speakers, brightness) and get pixel if you want a good software experience. I personally feel like Google gives a better every day experience but the battery life is mid even on the latest Pro devices.
Accurate!
Nope, Samsung One UI is better than Pixel
Samsung has better software these days
I prefer pixel only for the camera, otherwise One UI is beautiful and feature packed IMO.

Great comparison! Next time,iPhone se3 vs pixel 7a vs galaxy a54 comparison please
This is a great video!
I really needed this thanks if you have the time could you do the same but compare it to the iPhone 13 mini as well
I would be interested in seeing a blind camera comparison between Pixel 6A, Pixel 7A and Pixel 7 Pro. maybe you can ask a friend or family member to take photos, or you ask them to compare them.
How about camera shattering issue reported in Pixel 7?
I am on my last Pixel. I have the Pixel 6 and I have had it for almost 2 years. I have found that the phone overall decent. The one thing I hate about this phone is that it keeps loosing signal. I can have it in my pocket and the bars will drop like a rock to 0. And when I take it out of my pocket the signal returns. I got a replacement and it still does it. I would rather have the Samsung A54 over any Pixel.
Between the a54 and nothing phone 1 which would be a better pick(exclude the glyph interphase when deciding)?
Please test out the modem and cell reception of the pixel 7a, will be waiting for your review.
4 minutes into the video and i have to thank you. this is one of the best channels i've ran into in years. i hate everything. like the youtube decision to lock home and end-keys while typing to rwd or ffwd the video. i fucking hate the internet. thank you, though. ehm. love.
Please compare performance and battery life to the 6a. The 6a already has incredible performance for the price but still has stutters sometimes and I'd like to know how much smoother the 7a would be with the extra ram and G2 chip
I have a a54 I am returning when my 7a arrives, I have spent many hours reviewing both phones, the a54 pros imo is mainly its expandable storage and 5 years of updates, the storage is great for anyone that has limited data, you can turn it into a multimedia beast, when it comes to the actually guts it can not compare to the 7a, faster processor, 2 more gb of ram "for some reason the a54 in the US only has 6gb ram", clean unbloated OS, also it helps now that you get a pair of google buds and a case for free from google. It is when you benchmark both phones you start to see the real difference.
A54 vs Redmi NOTE 12 PRO PLUS Which PHONE camera & vdo best..???
Don't forget that the a54's battery is leaps and bounds superior to the Pixel 7. Pixel 7 battery life is borderline unacceptable. Even with the adaptive settings, it's shockingly poor. No doubt it will be much worse after 6 to 12 months of use. Then you have the poor fingerprint reader and average screen. The only compromise is some speed and camera which are all marginal. The a54 makes a much superior all-round package of a phone. Better screen, better battery, more premium build and ip68.
Just picked up a A54 in the UK for ÂŁ220 and it is the 8gb version. - crazy the phone only got launched about 12 weeks ago.. and I got it for that price. Plan to have it as a pay as you go for the next 4 years... my phone bill is ÂŁ20 a year currently in top ups. - saving me hundreds. đâ€
@gtavmj-1852 That's a bargain mate.I saw some foreign a54 floating about at a cheaper price. But unfortunately the warranty doesn't stand on them. Enjoy your a54 :)
@airrunner85 yeah it's a UK one ;) got it from cash converters... was ÂŁ249... but I haggled them down to ÂŁ220.
When I got my Pixel 6a the deciding factor was yes you get less OS updates with the Picel, however you get them pretty much as soon as they drop. I don't know if it's still true but I don't want to wait months for Samsung to make a new OS compatible with all their redundant bloat ware.
Just bought the A54 since Samsung was offering high trade in value (ÂŁ150) for my old phone (A90 5G) meaning it cost me ÂŁ299 vs ÂŁ449 for 7A (UK)! Was also put off the 7A by battery life and potential overheating issue. Happy to stick with Samsung experience but I'll admit I was torn
Pixel 7a's don't have any overheating issues and the battery life is better than the Galaxy A53, wouldn't be surprised if it's the same (or better) than the A54 because Samsung's long track record of having dismal battery life and longevity.
Great video Mike!! Is the pixel 7a better than the S21 FE or are they comparable?
I'm coming from an old note 9 and wondering if it'll be better
9:07 Hi Mike what about a gaming test, and a battery test(with charging test)
One of the first best comparison video for right segment and price in 2023. I enjoy great tech videos.đ
Nothing are missing out on this, they need to launch that phone 2 soon....
Pixels are basically perfect for me. They have great cameras, good enough SoC, long software support, and great price. That 600-700 savings from the flagships is awesome and the diminishing returns are minimal.
Um no longer support than a54
Great video.
All our carriers have the A54 on a crazy deal right now, only $10/mth for 24 months, so it ends up only costing $240+tax compared to the pixel 7a being $25/mth=$600. But I'm really concerned about longevity with the A54. I want my next phone to last 4 years just like my s10+ has. I don't think the A54 has the processor to do that. Seems like a no brainer with that price difference, but I know the pixel will perform better long term so it's difficult.
get the s23
@@hardekailawadi Yeah the s23 can be had for $650 and it's a much better phone than both of these
I love the small size of the s23 just concerned about the battery life. My m32 with 6000mah in just 1 year has lost quite a bit of battery life@@hardekailawadi
I got both phones because I couldn't decide...a week later I still don't know what one to pick but I'm leaning to the A54 because I watch everything on my phone. The A54 has a way better screen and awesome speaker. I like the wireless charging of the 7a but I don't have to charge the A54 until I get home, the battery is that good. As far as performance I really don't see a massive difference between the two. đ€·ââïž
Ok i see where you going! but what about the Cameras tho?
This has been helpful. Thanks!
Agreed, the A54 display is lovely . Much better for media consumption. The 7a display is đ”âđ«đ€ą
I would like to get the 7a but my experience with the fingerprint scanner of the 6 pro still makes me skeptical....i got so frustrated with it i had to sell it after 4 months of use
Fp was broken on Pixel 6 series. It improved on 7/7 pro and it's way better now on 7A. I registered my thumb twice and it unlocks every single time and quite quickly.
Great review! I wonder how the A54 would compare to the S22 ultra, and the S23 FE coming out.
Cant compare it to the S22 ultra though
It'll compare badly and get absolutely crushed. Might have longer software support, but there's a high chance the a54 will slow down more and more like the older ones did.
Check out MKBHD's comparison of A54 with flagships.
S23fe is coming ??? With all the back and forth around its launch, not really sure if that is a model to be considered, since it would slot directly against the A54
there will be no more fe's@@sagarmistry5920
Which performs better for live streaming on tiktok for instance, will either of these overheat if used to stream the camera for an hour or two?
I would 100% buy the 7a in this case because of the hardware. The cameras, processor and design hold up real nice. I'm using an S22 Ultra rn so I'm in no position to buy anything, but I would still go for the Pixel.
No SD card, 90 Hz, and Gorilla Glass 3. Nope.
pixel 7a for the price of a a54 would be the way
@@MrSuicidesilence91 Still no, for my reasons, above.
I exchanged my A54 with pixel 7A , woow pixel 7a what a deal never regret, i also hate big screen phones
@@gwine9087 gorilla glass 3 on my dad's note 4 is still holding up great. 3 or 5 doesnt really matter they all scratch up similar. my m32 has gorilla glass 5 and in 1 year in it does have scratches. both phones have been dropped quite some times. and I dont see the point of high refresh rate on phones. you aren't using phones for competitive games where it matters. I set my recent phones to 60hz as its normal and saves battery. Though I can agree on the sd card slot part, in my use case I would really miss it.
I don't know why does the ring around the front facing camera of the galaxy a54 bother you so much. I got the a53 and I don't even notice it.
Pixel is great for the price IF it is available from Google directly in your country. But Samsung is in every country with good after sales support too. That's why Samsung will always sell more.
Maybe heating issue condition which was one of the issues in pixel 6a would like to see how does pixel 7a works
You can turn off color saturation in the display options on the A54. Make the photos look natural.
Mike and Nate, you both upload quality content :)
One recommends avoiding phone for time management and focus while another recommends better phone between A54 and 7A
Keep up the good work
The problem in my country is that Pixel 7 and 7a are almost 100$ more than i can get A54. Good to live in US for those phones having basically same price. I bought A54 and i still think this phone is amazing for this price. Those little stutters doesn't really bothering me since it happens mostly only when u first time open or scroll an app/game while it's off ram or background running.
fingerprint scan in the middle of screen is more comfortable for me.
and dynamic range on Pixel is way more better then A54 because of ISP on processor.
I thought that the first A 51 was too ip68 , i remember diveing and had nothing at all .
Ciao, bellissima recessione.
List of bugs for 7A would be useful.
I'd go for the A54 just for OneUI and better reliability. And for longer updates.
Is it one UI or core
@@kalanigrager3709 Full OneUI
"Reliability" and "One UI" do not belong in the same sentence, bud. Whoever is feeding you lies are doing a good job at it đ
But does the Samsung keep your hands warm in winter?
Great comparison! But you forgot to mention, that the speakers on the Pixel are bad, if you want to listen to a video or news on the radio.
I have been using Android since my HTC Evo days, but finally switched to IOS this year due to the lack of updates from Google after certain number of OS updates even with my Pixels. Itâs like if you want the latest OS, buy a new phone. For a little bit more money, iPhones will last much longer than Android phones.
But iPhones are way simpler and more limited than Android phones
You didn't mentioned anything about modem speed and cellular reseption , pixe 7 had issues with it please check with 7a
The one im intrigued by is the Galaxy A34. It looks like an A54 but runs on a better (in my opinion) Dimensity 1080 chip and is cheaper. I'd love to hear your thoughts đ
Good point looking at this A34 for a while a great phone with that Mediatek chip most Reviews consider it better than A54đđđ
I'd love to see how much more the 54 heats up compared to the 34. Pretty sure the cameras did better job on the a54 in tests I've seen though
Agree, A34 is the real MVP in Samsung A series sadly everyone getting A54 only for review ...
I've tried both phone, the A54 feels just as smooth and stable after the last update, when it first came out it has stuttering issue after unlocking the phone but now it's buttery smooth. Maybe the A34 is still better for gaming, I'm not sure lol. I just wish the next A5 series use snapdragon chipset, sure exynos is not as bad as it used to but still.
A lot of people tend to dismiss the important of OS update. A54 is an investment phone for productivity use. You can save your money by using it up to 5 years as samsung provides 4 years OS update and 5 years security update. For other A samsung phone, sure it is fun on first 2 years. After that, good luck on getting the OS update.
I like it.. pixel is extra good when you are on a call with the IRS! Nicely done! đ

What is max youtube resolution on 7a and a54? Can you go with 1440p or 2160p?
As we know SAMSUNG phone provide video editor ( cutter/mix....) may i know that A54 / P7A is still have same function? i have no idea PIXEL can photo / video editor function
The downside of the Pixel is the support. Its not supported in many countries, you will lose a ton of features like VoWIFI, VoLTE, 5G, etc. Not to mention, not supported country means no repairability. I'm only scraping the bottom there are ton more features disabled when you're in a country that does not support a pixel. Ton of reviewers forget about this. The phone market isn't just the US, or some mainstream part of EU.
When reviewing support take in mind of other COUNTRIES.
Here in South America we don't really use NFC and wireless charging and 5G is starting to take of recently. So i understand why Samsung decide not to included and the Google Pixel is not that available.
Didi you already got the update from Samsung that make the 4k 30 fps stabilize? You can update that
Going on 3 1/2 years on my Galaxy S10e and looking to upgrade. For me it's either one of the Pixels or one of the Samsung's. Even though I'm IT, I don't really keep up with phone technology, but I at least want to take decent pictures. That said, no wireless charging is a deal breaker for me. Anyone have advice? I know anything I choose will be an upgrade over my S10e.
Pixel 7a supports wireless charging. Maybe it's good option for you
I'd recommend waiting till the 7a goes on sale, which will be soon, or look for sales on the 7. That or get the fe or last years flagship from samsung. Always go for sales, just means you van upgrade sooner without spending more.
Get Pixel 7 instead of 7a which are almost similarly priced. But a54 will have way better battery life and faster charging.

Hey @mike please compare pixel 7 and 7A & please help to find out which one is worth it to buy ?
Thanks in advance đ
Hey Mike, please compare the 7a with 7
Phones most people will buy . Good review
The shiny ring is likely an effect of cheaper manufacturing that isn't worth addressing if it can pull your customers up a rung on the model ladder.
Please compare the 7a to an older samĂmsung flagship
The A54 has dual sim capabilities & a microSD card slot. Not only that, you can buy it for $380 today new, factory unlocked, delivered to your home. The 7a is $500 + sales tax. And since it's primarily available through carriers & Google, you can't get the lower pricing you can get on the A54. This puts them in completely different categories. In the real world, the 7A is 32% more expensive, doesn't come with dual sim, and doesn't have expandable storage. Plus is doesn't come with Secure Folder which is the killer feature of Samsung phones.
I have an A53 as my work phone and I really don't rate it. Is there a way to turn off the home button and use swipes instead?
Yes in setting
i can't decide, I would buy both
I am happy in europe we have A54 at 8/128. Also sadly in my county Pixels arent officially avaible which mean even higher price and no 5G.
