- The Nerd tries to make sense of the chronology behind the timeline for one of Nintendo's well-known video game series - The Legend of Zelda. This is Angry Video Game Nerd Episode 40.
NOTE: After this video was released, Nintendo released the official Zelda timeline. The point of this video is, when we were kids, when the NES and SNES were out, nobody thought much about a timeline. It wasn't until later (after Ocarina of Time) when all the timeline theories really started. The Legend of Zelda is exactly what the title says - it's a LEGEND. A Legend is an unverified story handed down from earlier times. Often changed as time goes by, because different people remember the story in a different way.
Nintendo releasing a timeline is a reaction to the fan outcry that there needed to be one. When originally, no such thing was ever even considered. The point of the Zelda games is to explore and figure out puzzles. The timeline stuff is unimportant.

It's clear that they put them out as standalone games with references to other games and just pretended they had a plan later on. Especially when I heard that at least one of them was if Link died in another. Nope, I'll read Michael Moorcock if I want that level of ambiguity in my fantasy.

Here’s my explanation: There is no timeline and all the games are based on different rumors how a hero beat evil, and saved the princess and Hyrule. Makes sense since it’s called The LEGEND of Zelda.

And now we have _Breath of the Wild_ , which has references and locations from not only alternate timelines, but entire alternate worlds like Termina.

The main theory I've heard is that BOTW takes place at the very end of the timeline, and that all timelines eventually come together and end at BOTW.
Also, Termina isn't an alternate world, it's just another place like Holdrum in OoS.

Luigi Rinaldi I believe one of the dlcs includes new stuff like being able to find the Majoras mask in the game. If you can find Majoras mask in BOTW then technically speaking Termina must’ve existed in the same “timeline”.
@@GAPSYO3O1 I don't think those DLC items are to be considered canon though. Same thing goes for the Xenoblades Chronicles 2 collaboration - it doesn't mean that Xenoblade Chronicles and Zelda share the same universe, it's just a fun reference to another game.

So ironic after skyward sword they made an official timeline. Years ago I believe in Nintendo power there was an interview where either Iwata ,when he was still alive, or possibly Miyamoto said he liked to think of each adventure as its own separate story....you know...a LEGEND. Nintendo kind of bowed to fan pressure by cobbling a timeline together.
The fact that one of the major time splits is where link dies shows that there never was rhyme or reason to these games in terms of a timeline

I originally watched this when I was about 15. I didn't have literary any experience of these games. This gave me the awe to start them. So James, as a fellow James, thank you. This started a love of mine that I cannot express in words, and you were the one to start it. As games were a an influential thing in your life, you were in mine. From cinema, to older games, you really influenced me a lot growing up. For that, I thank you.

There are many different versions of legends because people don't tell the same story, and it also changes throughout the generations. And that is why there are so many different Zelda games because everybody tells the legend in there own way.

I never said I liked the timeline and I agree they didn't used to care (the 3 timeline split is way too convoluted for it to have been planned in advance) so thanks for the fanboy comment, hopefully you don't get so pointlessly worked up over minor issues in real life. Even if Nintendo didn't used to care about it they clearly do now, Skyward Sword's storyline is pretty much dedicated to setting up the timeline with all the curse stuff.

I agree on having no official timeline. Like most Final Fantasy games, Zelda focuses on gameplay and addition of new game mechanics instead of a continuation of sorts. I'm fine with that, just wanted to see if the game could pick up after II and see how Hyrule progressed.
The Irony of him being right about the adam and eve of hyrule eventually being a thing with Skyward Sword absolutely kills me.
I feel like BOTW and TOTK abandoned the timeline entirely. They decided the timeline should be left to the past, and they want to make a completely new universe with its own timeline.

I get what you're trying to say, but Godzilla movies Follow a linear path. At least until "Godzilla: Destroy All monsters" In the movie it's made clear that it's in the future. So the movie after that is a continuation on the movie before destroy all monsters. After that the continue on that storyline until they Recton all of the stories after the original several times before they can reach destroy all monsters in the chronological timeline. Eventually The retcon it a final time and continue on until Godzilla final wars. But I have no fucking clue where the 2014 movie comes in to apply for the movies that are coming out later like the Toho one next year. Hope that helps!

Link falls down holes all the time.
In TP he gets shot down from a canon when he was in the City in the Sky. In Wind Waker he gets thrown a few miles across the ocean, once by the Helmaroc King and the second time when he raised the Tower of the Gods from the ocean.
In Skyward Sword he falls down to the ground with an entire Island.
Termina is also confirmed to be a parallel version of hyrule, it is not ''Link's Purgatory'' as MatPat falsely claimed.
Not to mention that the existence of the Hero's Shade in TP completely destroys this ridiculous theory.
I dont mind Time Line theories; I've come up with quite a few myself over the years for Zelda. But there was always one little word that kept me from trying to make every little detail work in the Zelda universe and time line - "Legend." These games aren't detailed events in the history of Hyrule, they are legends that are told. Sure, if we wanted to put together a bible of Hyrule Legends documenting the events of the mythical land and its hero's we could, but they would still be just that. LEGENDS. And I think that's my favorite part about the series; yes they appear to be connected in some way but the details are fuzzy and each legend is supposed to be it's own unique tale. And thats one of the reasons I love it so much. great episode, AVGN! :)

A theory that no one has thought of saying. What if each Zelda game is the same? Its all just retellings of the same story, through different story tellers, much like how old ancient myths were the same story at its root, just the details were changed from teller to teller because it was all word of mouth. I doubt it would be true, but its just an interesting way to take the story line.

I'm rewatching all 200 episodes all the way through after Mike talked about some of the specifics of his involvement with the series. I believe he said he wrote this one while James was under the weather.
Funny how he said many Zelda fans couldn't bear the thought of another prequel (14:30). Skyward Sword, which came out a couple years after this, is a prequel to The Minish Cap and is also the earliest game on the official timeline, which also came out a couple years after this video

Herr der Zeiten I did, but I didn't have a youtube account back then, or if I did, it was a different one. Look at my youtube videos and compare what you see there to the original photo in the video. If you need any further proof, I have other later photos taken in the same place. I don't live in that house anymore, and I got rid of a lot of my stuff minus the powerglove, but you can definitely see the resemblance, and I can easily take more.

The way I always saw it, there may not even be a linear timeline since it is a legend. Legends are interpreted in many different ways which is why there are always different weapons and some names carry over. It’s a legend told in many different ways
The intro story from a Link to the Past is actually the story of Ocarina of Time. The 7 sages locking Ganon away is the whole quest. Therefore Link to the past happened far after OoT. Linking to the past is a way to connect back to that original time in OoT.
I just prefer to think that there is one "Legend of Zelda" and each game is a retelling of that legend, with different elements changed.
But seriously, I don't really care if there actually is a timeline... It's just a freaking game! lol

I think Skyward Sword's excuse kind of works for it all. Still like he says there doesn't seem to be any sort of planned timeline.
I like my theory about each one being a story of reincarnation. That’s why you constantly hear about previous heroes and have to obtain similar items from other Zelda games, as well as meet characters that look familiar. Just a lot simpler than the actual timeline showcased in Hyrule Historia.

I'm not a big Zelda fan, but I'll share my own theory. I'm sure a lot of people nowadays have think about it as well: it's a multiverse. Different parallel dimensions that are basically a reboot or a different interpretation of the same story, but with 4 recurrent main elements and characters: the princess Zelda, the warrior Link, the evil Ganon and the Triforce or the kingdom/land of Hyrule. Great video btw.

But now that it's happened, there's no need to bother making a follow-up video, since he'd just be repeating what was in Hyrule Historia anyway. The most he could do is point out plot holes and inconsistencies between installments.

In the end, Zelda is just a game about having fun and it remains the same storyline and awesome gameplay we all know. It's a legend like AVGN says. What I like about Zelda is it's the same storyline in a way, yes, but there's always some twist in Zelda games that make them unique. It's the same with Mario in a way...(not to mention that some Zelda games were probably made by different developers...and that's probably where the timeline got confused...I think...)
It's funny that with the Breath of the Wild Sequel, we might finally get an answer (and that answer being it's basically Multiverse Theory and there's several different timelines. And as Trunks and Cell said in Dragon Ball Z Abridged... Multiverse Theory is a bitch...)
