    @56arbee Hi, that is a great argument, I agree with the "Ravigneaux type" description even though the planet gears are not physically connected as in a traditional Ravigneaux gear set. If that is the case, then you could also argue that this transmission is actually a "Lepelletier Type" design which uses a simple input planetary gear set to drive a Ravigneaux planetary output gear set.

  • @56arbee
    @56arbee Před 13 lety +1

    Right about the common sun gear in a Simpson. I knew that too. Silly of me. However, after studying this geartrain more, I still argue that it is a Ravigneaux or as Gears magazine calls it "Ravigneaux type." Even though it has two ring gears, they are not on independant assemblies. Therefore, any action on one of the planets in contact with the ring gear will cause a like reaction of the other planet on the same axle. The two planets act as "long" and the two idlers as "short" planets.

  • @WeberAuto
    @WeberAuto  Před 13 lety

    @56arbee That is what I thought at first, but a Simpson gear set has common sun gears and these are separate sun gears. It appears to be two totally independent gear sets with a common carrier housing. The two ring gears can be removed seperately.

  • @56arbee
    @56arbee Před 13 lety

    Agreed. In fact, the ZF and the Ford 6R60 is the same design (but use separate 1234 and 3-5 R) housings.They utilize one piece long planets in the rear carrier. I forget where I read it, but I have heard them described as Lepelletier.

    I maintain my 6l80 very well, at least in my opinion I take my truck to the dealer for major services to keep good paper trail and records filter replacement every 30k no flushes and this thing has been flawless I love feeling my shifts up and downward it tells me it's still there. If it's too smooth like any other transmission I feel its wearing clutches faster with the slower engage like dragging shoes on the floor versus picking up your feet when walking not sure if that's how it all breaks down but that's how it feels to me so far nothing but positive things from my transmission

  • @56arbee
    @56arbee Před 13 lety +2

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but at 02:12 you say that the rear planetary gearset has two ring gears. This being a Ravigneaux gearset, I believe it has only one effective ring gear, that being meshed with the long planet gears. The short planet gears mesh only with the long planet gears and the small sun gear.

  • @WeberAuto
    @WeberAuto  Před 12 lety +2

    The 6L80 can handle 430 lb*ft of torque, the 6L90 is more, but I don't have a specification on it.

    @WeberAuto  Před 13 lety

    Hi, good observation, however; this is not a Ravigneaux gear set. The common planet carrier does not have long and short planet gears as a Ravigneaux does. This planet carrier has two totally separate sets of planet gears that are not connected to each other. The bottom gear set has an idler gear set to reverse the direction.

    Excellent video. Not a fan of the 6l90e. Would rather just have a 4l80e with better shift programming. The 6l90e shifts erratically, sometimes shifting smooth, sometimes shifting slow, sometimes shifting to fast and harshly. Not upshifting when i want, downshifting when I don’t want it to etc. I have one in a Isuzu npr with the 6.0 vortec v8. I miss my old truck with the 4l80e. The 6l90e has very noticeable torque management or throttle reduction between shifts leaving all light or mid throttle shifts above the 1-2 feeling like a pause then shift then clutch sort of feeling. In the box truck it won’t upshift until about 2200 rpm which is annoying and if the rpm wants to go below 1500rpm it downshifts. That’s great and all if I’m towing a large amount but I’m simply hustling chips and sodas around town. When cruising at like 40 it should upshift to 6th to save gas, but it won’t it will hold 5th or even 4th and if I apply brake it will down shift and if I let of gas it will down shift. Basically it’s a pos. It wants to be a manual so bad but it can’t be. It’s a 6spd auto it should act like one. Plus it has an annoying torque converter judder in 2nd gear and the 4th gear isn’t even 1:1 it’s like 1.15:1 which sucks it robs power and isn’t deep enough to grab on a freeway speed down shift. It will catch 5th which is overdrive, than torque management will rob power in 5th. This trans is aids. When my boss bought me the new truck I was excited to try the 6speed but 4000miles later I’m disappointed. Surely it can’t be saving gas holding rpm all the time like that. And I’m not sure it will last very long. It might be a rock solid trans but it sure shifts like shit. I would rather have a new redesign of the 4l80e that didn’t upshift to 3rd at 20mph and would actually lock the converter in 2, and 3rd gear. As long as it lasts a while I’m happy but I have a gut feeling it might not. It’s just annoying because Isuzu only lets me select gears 1,2,4, and 6 and the programming on the 4 position is for heavy hauling it won’t upshift until 3000rpm even with the lightest throttle angle (and I mean like 10-15 percent, which is required to get the truck moving)
    Sigh...if it ever breaks I’m sneaking into the lot and putting a 6speed manual or a 4l80e with a shift kit in it. They probably will never know since they aren’t really car people.
    Oh yeah all this is normal btw for the 6l90e. Only thing it does right is full throttle upshift which I don’t like to do because I don’t like to go around flooring a company vehicle like that. It needs a redesign or a scrap imo. The new 6.0 seems like a solid piece but Gm should let the driver better control the truck. I don’t need it downshifting all the time like a boy racer when in traffic like that.

    When the 4-5-6 clutch is applied it drives the output carrier at turbine shaft speed,you can see this at 18:25,you have one solid shaft to the bottom of the output carrier.At around 19:25 you misspoke and said it drove the carrier through input planetary at 1.5:1. The turbine shaft is driving the carrier at turbine shaft speed through 4-5-6 clutch and the 1-2-3-4 clutch is driving rear sun gear through input planetary and 1-2-3-4 clutch hub at 1.5:1. The result is output internal gear is driven at 1.152:1

    Somehow it seem that this transmission is less smooth on the 2-3 shift than any other. I can shift 2-3 quite well unless you ease the throttle during the shift. The other shifts work better if you are letting off the throttle.

      It is a good transmission. They are notorious for weak torque converters. My wife's is in the shop getting rebuilt now, but it lasted 160k with the original fluid. My advice is to use tow/haul mode when towing, or in steep terrain. Never tow in overdrive. Also, change the fluid and filter every 50k miles, despite what the owners manual may say. It will save you $$$ down the road. Her rebuild is $3k plus tax.

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  Před 8 lety +1

      +Kaylee Mortensen You have to manually upshift and downshift in manual mode. Many vehicles have a plus and minus symbol next to the shifter lever. This causes an upshift when you tilt the lever towards the plus symbol and downshifts when you tile the lever to the minus symbol. Other vehicles have little paddles on the steering wheel that do the same thing. If yours does not work properly, there may be a wiring problem that needs to be diagnosed by a professional. Thanks for watching.

      @WeberAuto  Před 8 lety

      Make sure your fluid level is correct first. I do not have a video about a governor yet. It is a part that rotates with the transmission output shaft that controls a fluid pressure that increases with vehicle speed. This fluid pressure causes the transmission to upshift. Many transmissions have a governor pressure port where you can connect a pressure gauge and see if it increases as it should. The governor is an internal part. There are other things that can also cause the transmission to not upshift, but the Governor is the main part responsible for upshifts. Best wishes.

    Bad gearbox, unreliable. I have it in my 2011 camaro SS, my mileage is 106.000 miles and gearbox is already kicking. The solenoids do not change, GM wants to make more money by selling the valve body assembly. All rubber bands are torn, you need to change a set of rubber bands. This gearbox does not like high speeds above 100 mph, since the oil pump is not designed for this. Why do you put such a gearbox in a muscle car if it does not fit a 6.2 liter engine?! I am very disappointed in GM
