Thank you for the video. I can agree with Financial accounting been the easiest course in accounting. Almost done with Managerial Accounting which I honestly don't find very interesting compared to Financial accounting. Now I know what to look forward to in Intermediate Acc I, II, III which are my next courses.

Advanced accounting was the most difficult class I ever took in college. Right when spring break started in 2018, I made a hard decision to withdraw from advanced accounting as I was taking cost accounting as well during that semester. I retook advanced accounting in the fall of 2018, and by the grace of God, I made a B in that course and gave all the praise and glory to God.
Dropping and retaking advanced accounting did delay my graduation by one semester (from May 2018 to December 2018). I am thankful to have graduated with 126 credit hours, which was 6 more than the credits required for my bachelor’s degree in accounting. I also had to return to school for two more semesters in Fall 2019/Spring 2020 to take 24 credit hours of additional accounting/finance courses toward the 150-hour requirement for the CPA exam.

Interesting video, thanks for sharing your experience in a modern day accounting curriculum. I always thought the accounting courses I took were among the more valuable courses in my major, which was Marketing. I only took Principles of Accounting 201 and 202, earning a B and an A respectively. I had to study my butt off to accomplish that and don't know how well I would have done in Intermediate Accting.. I'm retired now after a career in transportation management. I had a healthy respect for the accountants I interacted with in my career; it's a good profession.

I feel like the ease of the class depends on the school and the teachers… its all about how they explain it and how well you take in the information. Because I’ve had times where I couldn’t pass a class but then got a different teacher and realized the mineral was actually easy to do and it was just the other teacher who explained it so complicated

I second this!! I took math in one semester my senior year and I've failed it (55%). I needed to get at least a 60% in math to even apply to the programs I wanted so I had to take it again. I was scared because it traumatized me, but the second time around with a new teacher, it was so easy to understand! I finished with a 92% in that class! Granted, I also did do more exta work trying to understand concepts after school the second time around 😅

I like your list. We didn't have an excel class but our professors just built it into each class. I would have preferred more instruction on it which I could have gone to a tutorial for but I never did. My personal list of classes would be
    Financial Statements
AIS (Ours was a hybrid of info systems and quickbooks)
    Auditing
    Int 1
    Costs and Budgets
    Int 2
    Federal Tax
    Advanced Accounting
These were my upper division classes. I didn't list any of lower classes because they were pretty easy comparatively. And my two hardest classes were probably my favorites because they were challenging and my professors kept us on our toes. Thanks for making the video.

He even said after the first test, if you got a C you might as well drop the class now. I said... "Challenge Accepted". Haha I loved financial, managerial and Intermediate 1, I had the same professor for those 3 so it made it so much easier. If you are in a place in your life where you can put in time towards the education and have a clear cut idea of what you specifically want to do in accounting then most definitely 50 years old is not anywhere close to the cut off. If you go for it though go for it 100%

    • @andrewca1659

Accounting is a broad topic with many different types of accounting: financial, managerial, cost, etc . Financial accounting focuses primarily on financial reporting. This includes the working papers and the preparation of financial reports (income statement, statement of changes in equity, balance sheet, cash flow, etc)

I suggest you take a look at what you want to do as a professional. If you are interested in the reporting and just doing the entries type of work, do information systems. IF you want to be like an accountant that uses the info to make financial decisions for the company you can take risk management or something that builds you up for that. Research CPA and CMA route, and build yourself according to what you like most. Just a thought. Do deep research.

When you took intermediate accounting courses 1 and 2, did your instructor cover all the material within the chapters?? Because when I took the courses my teacher (same for both) would generally cover about 80% of the material in the chapters. She would most usually skip the appendix items for example. So she would only test us on what we covered.

    • @SaraMarie
      @SaraMarie  Před 6 lety +2

I actually had the same professor for both intermediate 1 and 2. It was nice because that way he knew where we left off and was able to do little refreshers when needed. We went over the majority of the information but there were definitely times we didn’t cover some material. One nice thing was if we didn’t cover it, it wasn’t on the exam.

For me from easy to hardest, I would say...
    1) Financial Accounting
    2) Governmental Accounting
    3) Individual Tax Accounting
    4) Corporate Tax Accounting
    5) Auditing
    6) Managerial Accounting
    7) Advanced Accounting
    8) Intermediate Acct 1
    9) Intermediate Acct 2
    10) Cost Accounting
It could possibly be that I took Cost Accounting during the summer in which the lecture was like 16 chapters in 1 month of coursework (20 days). I got a C-.
Also, my governmental accounting prof gave a ton of extra credit, which includes research paper, and even take home exam which boosted my grade to an A.
For me, I was highly interested in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistant program, and had been a Supervisor. Tax is the reason why I choose to major in Accounting in the first place.
Note: I took Intermediate Acct 2 and Advanced Accounting during the same semester, but I took both Intermediate Acct 1 and 2 more than once. For Intermediate Accounting 1 at SFSU, as long as you got a C, you can move on. But you can move on with a C- for Intermediate Acct 2.

Is it just me or do Americans have to take more Accounting classes? Here in Australia, many of the classes are pretty much consolidated. Like for example, in my uni we our equivalent of Intermediate 1 and 2, and Advanced Accounting is pretty much covered in two classes: Financial Accounting and Company Accounting. We only have one Auditing class, though we do have to take three legal classes like Revenue Law, Company Law etc etc. Though not as much as you guys in the US seem to do?

I'm getting a business degree and accounting classes are a large part of my curriculum. I am a bit worried about this aspect because I've never been good at math in school (like solving math problems in my head).. However, if using tools like excel and a calculator are allowed, that would be great. I have a copy of my suggested schedule and there's a few classes on there that I'm just scared of. Accounting and the Social Justice Warrior "socialogy" classes are the most frightening/concerning for me. I am afraid that I will start spewing "hate facts" and statistics when they start lying about "the wage gap" and "systemic racism".
