Fine Art Seascape Photography at Midnight - My Biggest Challenge

  • Attempting Fine Art Photography at midnight
    A couple of weeks ago I headed out to New Brighton Lighthouse in the pursuit of creating a few seascape images. There was a catch however, it was at midnight. Without stating the obvious but it was dark, very dark! On top of that, it was during the first of this years spring tides.
    My challenge and thought process...
    I wanted to create a couple of fine art seascape images during the spring tide. The high tide was either at midnight or midday! The middle of the afternoon was out of the question because I knew the beach would be packed with daytrippers. Besides, who wants to take photos during the day?
    Photographing at midnight isn't as straight forward as you might think. It's difficult to see and focus plus it's a little scary!
    Anyways, being the trooper I am I headed there and gave it my best shot.
    I hope you enjoy the video

    Water lapping round your feet in the dark, on your own and still not high tide! I wondered if someone had found a washed up camera and posted what they found on it 😱
    I liked both images, first worked well for me and like the light pattern on the water. Showing the processing time-lapse I find captivating, the little detail changes that make that final image sing.
    Well done Sir Gary

    Hi Gary, great to see your down at New Brighton which is just around the corner from me. On the subject of the soft sand issue I've done a fair bit of seascape photography which comes from living on the Wirral Peninsula & I purchased a set of snow/sand feet from Manfrotto & they are brilliant for spreading the load of your tripod legs & are pretty universal as they have rubber straps to fasten them to your tripod legs, I've even used them on wet mud with no problems of my tripod sinking. Hope the info helps & love your channel, keep up the good work.

    I really like your enthusiastic approach to photography.
    When I do long exposure at night I use the 6400 rule. Put the camera in iso 6400 and the aperture as I want. If for example the light meter says 4.5 seconds for those settings I simply switch to bulbmode and change my ISO to 100 and the time to the same amount but in minutes (4.5). Works great for me.

    Great video and a really interesting project which I can't wait to have a go at. I apologise right now if I am teaching my grandmother to suck eggs but I've watched a couple of other of your videos where you discuss the tides. There is a rule of thumb called the rule of twelfths in connection with tides. From low to high tide (or the other way), which takes approximately 6 hours, the tide moves one twelfth of its range during the first hour, two twelfths the second, three twelfths the third, three twelfths the fourth, two twelfths the fifth and one twelfth during the last hour. That means that it moves half of its entire range during hours three and four, so they tend to be the scary hours if you are playing on the beach, especially on a flat sandy one. Again, apologies if you knew all that already. Anyway, thank you for your channel - I've learned loads of stuff from it.

  • @keety
    @keety Před 3 lety +1

    Good stuff, Gary, I have a fool proof method for working out the correct exposure time for Long Exposures, that saves all the "I'll try 3 min 20 seconds... nope to dark... I'll try 3 mins 40 seconds, nope, still too dark, 3 mins 10 next..." Take a shot at really high ISO so that you can check that it's correctly exposed, Iso 12000 or higher, it will look utter rubbish but it doesn't matter as we're just interested in getting the correct exposure. Then simply use an exposure calculator (photo pills app or whatever) and stick your current settings in and change the ISO down to the one you want to use, this will then calculate exactly the exposure you need. This has a couple of benefits, for 10 stop or higher filters you get the exact setting as its rare to get a big stopper or what not that's exactly 10 stops. Secondly the camera has a greater dynamic range at lower ISO's so you'll get even more data than your preview which gives you more to play with. Since I figured this out It's saved me standing around hoping and praying that the exposure will be ok, as I know it will be correct!

Funnily enough I was scouting another lighthouse recently and noted when some full moons will be in a great (hopefully!) position and am planning to go there in next few months if the weather co-operates. I'm still undecided whether to get the sky as multiple stacked images or take my little star tracker where I know I can get 4-5min exposures.
