He was a really aggressive player in a certain way. Its not about just making a good break, but it is about winning the frame with every visit to the table.

Counter-intuitively Ronnie has the best safety game of the two. whereas Hendry was so good, and so aggressive with his long game that his opponents would take on harder shots, they were afraid to play safe!

      +Ginger Scholes You said" Davis was past his best by then " That's exactly same thing happened to Ronnie also because " Hendry was past his best by then ".In fact Hendry is just 6 years older than Ronnie, Higgins and William. Hendry not only played well with Davis&Jimmy but also stop Ronnie/Higgins&William in 90's----- that's why we call it "Dominate" For example : Ronnie won 95 masters/93, 97 UK C. But he can't even touch World Champion once in 90's, because of Stephen Hendry was in his peak, meanwhile you can't say Ronnie was relatively weak in 90's. They are both genius and skillful no doubt about it, but when people talking about " Domination or Consistency "in snooker history. The only answer must be Stephen Hendry.

    • @woudwilder8324
      @woudwilder8324 Před 8 lety +4

      It is nonsens to call the 90's a weak era. It was packed with great players. Davis was still there, White, Parrott, O'Sullivan was already there since 1993 and winning tournaments right from the start, Doherty, Higgins, Williams,...Hendry just made them look like schoolboys and before he lost his hunger to win everything they had very few chances to win something.
      The amount of centuries and 147's that Hendry knocked in in an era where they were playing less tournaments than today is just amazing.
      In fact, I think the standard back then was higher than it is today. Players like Selby, Hawkins, Bingham,Carter are all good decent players but Hendry in his prime wouldn't have been concerned at all facing them.

    Hendrys 147 in the final of the victoria challenge cup, last frame of the tournament against Ronnie O'sullivan, having just lost the previous 6 frames, with the match tied at 8-8 trumps any great break Ronnie O'sullivan has done. Making a 147 when you basically haven't potted a ball for 6 frames while your opponent keeps you in your chair certainly trumps Ronnie just banging shots in all over the table with average cue control and no pressure.

    Hendry was the best around at the time, a great player and certainly a player who changed the game, he raised the bar significantly and only a few players around at that time could compete with him, Jimmy White being his main opposition.
    Its ridiculous to measure how good a player is by just when they were successful. Players like John Higgins, Mark Williams have shown longevity, they are still competing at the top and that (to me) makes them better players than somebody who ruled the roost with little competion for only a brief period.
    The bad news for Hendry was his time at the top was brief due to his successor Ronnie O'Sullivan appearing on the scene, O'Sullivan effectively retired Hendry, pushing the game to a whole new level which Hendry couldn't achieve.
    If it were possible to actually sit down and be objective about snooker players Hendry would probably be in the top 10 of all time.
    Hendry was the man to beat for a decade and luckily for him there were only a few capable of doing so.
    O'Sullivan remains the man to beat for more than 25 years although it seems to me his days are numbered.
    Judd Trump looks like the player to take the game to the next level but it will be matched and exceeded in time.
    Like all sports, snooker evolves, players get better and better, the standard is always rising and thesedays with quite some momentum.
    Statistics are only what we want them to be, what we include or exclude in statistics is a manafactured statistic.
    Theres lies, theres 'damn' lies and then theres statistics.
    If you do require a statistic, have a look at the Head To Head with Hendry Vs OSullivan

    Hendry will go down as the best ever. Unlike Osullivan and the rest of them Hendry has won all his titles in front of hostile crowds with only a small support from Scotland. He even won a title playing with a broken arm and who will ever get close to that great match when he came back from 9-0 down to win 10-9?

    The Triple Crown is a collective term used for the three most prestigious snooker tournaments: the World Championship, the UK Championship and the Masters. These tournaments are sometimes also called snooker's major tournaments, the big three BBC events, or simply as the big three. There are ten players who have won all Triple Crown events at least once: Steve Davis, Terry Griffiths, Alex Higgins, Stephen Hendry, John Higgins, Mark Williams, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Neil Robertson, Mark Selby and Shaun Murphy. Only Davis, Hendry and Williams have won all three Triple Crown events in a single season, and Hendry is the only player to achieve this feat twice, in the 1989/1990 and 1995/1996 seasons

    stephen comes very close to being greatest. no doubt a complete player. but a guy(ronnie) who can score 147 in 5 mins is beyond belief. i recall another 147 against mark king when he asked for the price of maximum break before potting a single ball. He went on to make maximum. I doubt any player has that much confidence to get maximum before potting single ball. Another thing stephen himself admitted ronnie is by far the best player he has seen.

    when Hendry would win tournaments with an overall pot success above 90%, made 775 centuries, 11 maximums, compared to John Higgins 500 centuries, 5 maximums(some of which had enormous luck to make) and show me a tournament in the last 5 years Higgins has won with a pot success above 90%, but somehow todays John Higgins would wipe the floor with prime 90s Hendry? It's not just an unareasonale asserstion it's basically delusional. Hendry potted everything you put in front of him, what can higgins

  • @adronias
    @adronias Před 12 lety

    do to counteract Hendrys ability to knock in a long red and then dish up. There's nothing you can do when your only shot ina frame is to break off and then the other guy clears up. Whichwas so common with Hendry because at the first opportunity he broke open the pack, which enabled him to clear up the frame more often compared to the norm of pciking off all the reds out in the open, and then breaking the pack open at the last possible shot, which often resulted in bad luck and end of break.

Although as most experts would say O Sullivan is the most naturally gifted player ever but like Davis before him consistency was the key for Hendry. Trump is now coming up and similarly to Ronnie if he wins an odd tournament and disappears for six months and reaches a semi it doesn't take you to Davis and Hendry greatness.

    If your chief criteria is dominance for a sustained period, I would have to agree with this. Hendry was untouchable for 8-10 years. Ronnie was never that. But that would all be only for the modern era. Steve Davis would have a case from the 80's, but Joe Davis is miles ahead of EVERYONE on any criteria really, including dominance (15 world titles!). Modern fans don't seem to know a whole lot about him though!

    Keep arguing girls, but the debate over greatest of all time is simple! Hendry is the most successful player of all time, O'Sullivan easily the greatest player to ever pick up a cue! If you've played the game and have watched for years, nobody, not even the great Hendry has come as close as O'Sullivan to perfecting a game that cannot be perfected! When 99% of past and, indeed present pro's are all saying O'Sullivan is the best player the game has ever seen and will probably ever see, why not believe them eh!?

      You are deluded... Ronnie ossulivan was./is able to win tournament in all 3 era. 90's 00's and 2010+. He has more talent than hendry every had. He has played in an era where the standard is much higher than the 90's. And ronnie has more centuries , more 147 , more notable names to his opoenents list and all this with less snooker played. Ronnie missed years and played for like 3 tournaments per year for a while. U have no clue what u are saying... Yes hendry has won more but that is the only thing he has more of lol. Even stephen hendry has openly stated that Ronnie is the BEST player that has every lived not to mentioned all the other past and current pros.

      we will probably never see the level of dominance that Hendry had for so many years in Snooker because he pushed the level up a notch and because of that the game has got more competitive in the last 15 years

      But only a fool would disagree with this point.
      Ronnie Ossulivan at his very best will beat any other players at their best including hendry. Its just that simple. Ronnie can do everything hendry could and more. He has more physical talent , he has a better snooker brain , he is more fluent , he has a better cue action and WHEN hes mentality stable he is just a step above every 1 else to every play the game. EVEN the current pros and all the snooker legends agree with this statement and all the snooker critics and fans. Dont get me wrong hendry and higgins are still the next 2 best players of all time but ronnie is at the top.

    bogdychamp Hardly likely '90s Hendry will be blown by todays pros. I would however call is a hard-fought match. Why are people always saying that players who dominate a long period of time have done that in a WEAK era? Stephen Hendry was way beyond the level of his peers, HE was the exceptional one rather than the others being weak and Hendry mediocre. He turned pro in 1985 at 15. Ronnie in 1992. Doherty, Williams and Higgins, the beginning of the 90s as well. That's not exactly a lot of years in between. I have watched some of your comments and I'm sorry to say this, but I find you a Hendry hater. Give credit where is due, I also find Ronnie the greatest ever, but Stephen is still a 7 time World Champion. Putting Higgins before Hendry, that's rich.

      Hendry in his prime would beat O'Sullivan, because as well as better shot selection and equal skill. He had something Ronnie doesn't have. Mental toughness. Hendry never knew when he was beaten, would never give up and was always calm under pressure and that's why he's the best ever player by a mile.

      Indeed, but to me the Victoria Charity Challenge match in '97 answers the question who was better in their prime. To compile a 147 in the final frame of a match where your opponent has come from 8-2 to 8-8, is unbelievable. I don't think Ronnie is any better in 2022 than he was in 1997 (he did the record 147 in under 6 minutes that season). Who knows how the record books would look if Hendry didn't go off the boil post-2000.
