      PrimoMedia - Chris Biela this is only the fifth largest flood though in Des Plaines. The one in 2017 (I think it was that year) was way worse. And there was one in the early 2000s too. Very bad even along the Chicago River branches to the suburbs east of us.

      In Lemont IL where I live, it is known as the Des Plaines River valley region. The town is along the hill where as the river is far down the hill. A train bridge goes over the river and anytime it rains, that water goes from being 8 feet below the train bridge to about a foot and a half. That river is incredibly vulnerable to flooding. My area of the river was preserved being known as pristine wetlands with endangered species so no residential areas get flooded. I don’t know what they were thinking to populate the north stretch of the Des Plaines River given how frequently the water levels fluctuate.

      What? Living next to a river isn't the problem, it's the city daming up the river further up which causes a huge collection of rain water that inevitably leads to floods.

    There were three cars completely submerged under the train viaduct on Golf Rd. I watched as a BMW, a Nissan, and Lexus emerged as the water was pumped out. Fancy cars completely destroyed by unthinking drivers. The day before I other parts of town, I saw cars plowing through water...not knowing if it was deep or not. One lady, refusing to go back and around...actually got out of her car with an umbrella and went tapping along trying to figure out the water depths. She wound up plowing through the water also. Crazy.

    Truly heartbreaking. And despite there never being a good time to say it, municipalities should regulate development in flood-proned areas. Too often realestate folks and developers sell stuff to buyers who simply do not know how to get the information they need that would prevent them from ever building in these areas at all. Sure 'buyer beware' is important as a concept, but lack of transparency and deceit by developers and even elected or appointed officials is unconscionable.

    • @chrisbiela
      @chrisbiela  Před 4 lety +1

      True. Where is big money involved there is no transparency. On the other hand all home buyers are not impulse buyers. If you buy a house usually you do some research.
