- The movie "Cocktail" from 1988 showed what happens when you put Tom Cruise's manic energy behind the bar of a TGI Fridays. Before he mastered his sick flare bartending moves, he got stumped by the Cuba Libre. Let's learn the original recipe and then a next-level rum & cola.

I find it gratifying seeing you use Flor de Caña. For many years while working in a liquor store in Miami, I always would tell my customers to stop using Bacardi Superior and get Flor de Caña instead. The flavor changes dramatically for the better.
Fun fact, the drink was invented by a US military officer at a bar celebrating victory. You mentioned the Spanish-American war, but most don't realize the Cuban war for Independence was the catalyst. The US officer declared that a symbol of our two country's new friendship should be made and asked the bartender to make something from America's most recognizable brand (Coca-Cola) and Cuba's (sadly mistaken for Bacardi). When he got the drink, he toasted to a free Cuba.... And the Cuba libre was born.
Fun fact 2, Bacardi was never the #1 run in Cuba. It was at best #3. #1 was Havana Club (same recipe that Bacardi now owns) and #2 was Ron Matusalem. Considering that Bacardi has cheapened Havana Club, I really recommend people try Matusalem. It's still owned by the same family and the new generation is determined to stay true to the original.
Very cool history lesson
Felipe Pubillones yeah i studied with the grandson of the founder of bacardi
LEGIT TROPICS that's actually kinda neat. When I was in the liquor business, one of our customers was one of the many exes of the Bacardi men 😂
FUCK FLOR DE CANA sorry don't care if its a quality rum. I will enjoy my Doorlys and my Appletons thank you very much. I am not being a snob munchies.vice.com/en_us/article/qkxv7v/the-silent-epidemic-behind-nicaraguas-rum FUCK. FLOR. DE . CANA. Also Bacardi makes a decent 8yr and 10yr, gonna shit on Bacardi because its a bottom shelf, typical. There is actually a CUBAN Havana club and the BACARDI Havana club, yes Bacardi owns the rights but the old bottlings are still available. I cannot and will not support Flor De Cana and I am pretty damn glad I never paid a cent towards them for a drink.
Captain Zeke Bacardi 8 year is overpriced average rum. 10 year I've never seen marketed here in the states, but going off of the way overpriced 12 year old Reserva de la Familia, probably follows the mediocrity philosophy. And I have no idea what you're talking about because Bacardi isn't considered bottom shelf. The gold, silver, special, and 151 all classify as upper mid shelf. Bottom shelf is pretty much strictly all the "no name" brands.
The Havana Club that was made in China was never the true recipe, so no there hasn't been anything close to two Havana club until Bacardi started making it. The only differences would be sugar cane source and most likely method of during, but remains original recipe.
I will only agree about Appleton if it isn't the entry level gold and white, man those are insults to what Appleton rums can really be. I keep a 21 year stashed for myself on special occasions. Never had the other one you mentioned, so maybe I'll try finding it.
(Before watching) There's no way nick uses three simple ingredients...he's going for a high end remake i bet.
(After watching) Awwwwww yeaaaaaaa
The rum and coke was the first drink I ever knew about, my grandfather would often have one after work when I was a kid. When I first started mixing it was one of the drinks I knew I could start with as it was super easy and nearly perfect.
The way she pronounced “libre” was really making me mad
cooba libra
They do the same in The Godfather movies when Michael Corleone visits Havana. Cuba lehbrah.
That's how a bartender pronounced it to me in Cuba. Annoys me too when she says it, but I think its actually the correct way to say it if you're in Cuba.
Jonathan Leiman Free Cuba es un buen cóctel, perfecto gratis libre libertad para la república cubana
I just take a big swig from a liter of Coke to make some room, then I pour in a half pint of regular Captain Morgan's into the Coke bottle and wallah! Rum and coke. This method works great for those times your walking around in public like at a parade or county fair or some such and they don't allow alcohol. It looks like your drinking Coke.
Nick, the measuring technique for the reducing is genius. Why haven't I thought of that or encountered it before? Thanks! Also, thanks for taking the Cuba Libra and kicking it up a notch.
Don't know about genius, but it's definitely a handy trick
Cuba Libre is one of the favorite cocktails here in Germany. Its my absolute favorite. I always have a bottle of Havana, Coca Cola and some Lime in my fridge
Rum in your fridge? Why would you do that?
the rum isnt in the fridge only the coca cola and the limes :)
It's a *COOBA LEEBRA*
I am a not drinker, but I get aesthetic pleasure watching your videos. Thank you.
A challenge for you, try to imrpove Fernet with Coke. As an Argentinian i'm deeply intrested in your thoughts about our drink. Cheers :)
Thanks for making these awesome videos Mr Fisher. I actually am enjoying them and it’s inspiring me to be apart of the liquor industry by either becoming a bartender or working at an alcohol sales store and being able to recommend alcohol for drinks and this video series you have with awesome cocktails like the pan galactic gargle blaster from the hitchhikers guide and the White Russian from the Big Lebowski are absolutely amazing to see you make...please keep it up...I do mean that from the bottom of my heart. You’re incredible.
As a bartender not working from a public place but from home, these videos have been inspiring to keep my craft at top levels. It's improved and maintained my home bar at top level, and it's only required a trip to the store but a few times.
I wish you luck in seeking something in this industry. It is fun and rewarding but definitely hard work. I've been in it over a decade so I have zero complaints.
Thanks for making this video! I'm actually going to Cuba tomorrow! I'm going To Holguin!!!
I am literally salivating. Also, thanks for measurments in metric!
Awesome video!
Made the cocktail yesterday, but without slow motion. :-). It is indeed awesome! Thanks Nick!
Thanks for this. A great video.
3:43 *Argentine anthem intensifies*
Shocked Kirby JAJAJAJAJAJAJAAJAJS
Wow that looks so damn good. I would love to try it.
Rum and cokes are so good.... I've been using captain morgan's spiced rum for mine and man it goes down nicely
While I have none of the stuff for the refined Cuba libre, as is the case with most of these videos, I'm definitely adding lime to my rum and coke! Always a great video! Cheers!
Try making "The Cheech" a drink that got semi popularized by Green day and obviously named after Cheech Marin
Ingredients are
Patrón Silver tequila
Tonic
Lime (fresh or Rose's)
A dash of Sprite
Ice
Never found any exact measurements so I've just freestyled it so far but it'd be interesting to see how you do it
Well damn, I tried your improved version and it's pure magic! Nice video!
I remember making Cuba libre (didn't knew it was called like that back then) in the back of a truck with a couple of people in the parking lot of my highschool, but with Bacardi... Pretty bad
Well done on using "Take Five" -- my favorite Jazz track -- with the video. RIP, Dave Brubeck. And, I have a ton of limes I need to use, so...
Wow I am going to try this one
Nice choice of rum for this drink!
Cuba Libre is one of my favorite Cocktail, but this new version, I WANT TO TRY THAT, they look, fancy and complex but at the same time so delicius and refreshing
Blacktail is an amazing bar. Their different plays on old fashioneds is hella fun.
It's CokeCola(Sugar Cane) Lime and the Original Rum used in the movement was Bacardí Original that was a Cuban Rum that after the Cuban Revolution, the company fled to PuertoRico.
Now you need to make Fernet with Cola. Cheers from Argentina!
apoyo la mocion!
Me sumo a la peticion jaj
cual es tu receta favorita?
Cocktail Chemistry the most usual preparation is 35% fernet 65% coke and a couple ice cubes (percentages may change), served in a plastic bottle cut in half (you should melt the edges a little bit with a lighter)
Julian Ciari avísale que se sirve en una botella recortada 😁
Very intresting! Gonna have to try it next weekend! :D
Fernet and coke is the best drink in Argentina when you're hanging out with friends
Didn't know this had an offical name! i love to drink this all the time i just love the taste of lime and rum and coke..
Exactly how we make it at my bar, except we use the darker Flor de Cana 7 year
gran reserva. Mexican coke makes a huge difference.
Wasn't aware that the Cuba Libre needed an upgrade, but watching this video has convinced me otherwise. thank you for posting this :)
Ay, Flor de Caña- Nicaragua getting some love!
That second drink....O-M-G!
“ should start by calling up iceman” hahah. Both cocktail and Top Gun are a few of my favorite movies
Fernet with coke is the best drink ever
I'm a fan, though it's pretty controversial
I've tried several times, but I loathe fernet
Is it fernet branca or fernet branca menta?
richard benson it's with fernet branca, the common one. I have tried it with branca menta but i didn't like it as the mint is a strong flavor and in my opinion does not fit with the combination of coke and fernet
I guess thats the name of that mysterious dry and bitter tasting Argentinean drink i had in mexico, fernet and coke huh
This is a really classic drink. I love it.
I also like a Nuka Dark, or a Coke and Whiskey
3 years later this hits different
"Let's all just take it down a notch" 😂😂😂 That scene was hella stressful!
That is one fancy ass Cuba Libre. In the Netherlands we just take a plain bacardi bottle and coke bottle and mix them to get hammered. It's called a "Baco".
I prefer Kraken black spiced rum. Add ice in an old fahion glass, 1oz Kraken, top with 4oz coke, garnish with lime wedge & maraschino cherry. Aggressively pour the coke in the bottom corner of the glass to swirl the ingredients together and slowly rotate the glass to pour the remaining coke on top. This seems to keep the rum and coke more carbonated. I feel stirring makes the drink prematurely flat. Cool video, interesting take on a rum and coke. Can't wait to try these recipes for my favorite drink.
Flora de Cana --- one of my most favorite rums!! :)
Fernet with coke ❤️❤️🇦🇷🇦🇷
I often try to remake your cocktails and I must say you have more of a love of alcohol than me haha. Don’t get me wrong I love to get drunk but I like to not realise it’s happening. Plus I have a sweet tooth so whenever I do remake your cocktails I always dilute it more with it’s non alcoholic components. That’s just me though, that’s how I like my cocktails. Love your content, keep it coming
Nice tip on the reduction
Dont know if you had been told about this, but there's a drink called "Blacktooth Grin" wich was invented by Pantera's guitarrist, Dimebag Darrell. I think this would be a great way to appeal to any heavy metal fan that might have subscribed to this channel.
oooh merch for germany, nice!
That's right! Fernet and Coke is a really popular argie drink. Some people call it the "Fernandito" Which is like saying "Little Fernando" and it's a nice name if you ever want to make a perfect version of one of my country's signature drinks ;)
I've been to the blacktail black, such a great spot! Dead Rabbit takes the cake tough ;). I hear they're opening up a new place soon as well.
You might want to try a Cuba Libre Preparado one day (Gin and Angostura added). For me nothing beats this as it comes to longdrinks.
The best improvement I ever made to my Cuba Libre was to *muddle the lime* in the bottom of the glass before adding ice, tossing in two ounces of white rum, and filling with cane sugar cola.
Adding a squeeze of lime at the end (or a measure of lime juice, as in this video) does well enough, but the real trick is to get the *oils from the rind* from muddling into the drink to take things to a higher level.
I use a quarter wedge of a full lime in my Cuba Libre and always end up smiling. This is also the method I use for my Gin & Tonics. Try it.
Love the video .. what is the name of the song in the beginning I’ve been looking for it for years as it was one of my grandfathers favorite jazz tunes ?
i liked when he got dorked by the register drawer lol
I actually had my first full drink today :) however it was a bit weak as my mother made it and put a ton of cola and hardly any booze! Def going to make this version and see how different it is with the full booze in it
Can you please recreate more of the drinks from the movie Cocktail. Thanks so much
Viva!
Please do the Sazerac
Cuba libre is my favorite drink
..."Argentinian drink fernet and cola"... Nice reference
Greetings from Argentina.you are realy cool
Fernet con coca rules
I use dark rum with this, it's nice
Eeeeeh awante el Fernando papá. Argentina rules
I can't believe the Fernandito featured on this video kdsjflksdjkl that's amazing, hugs from Argentina.
I remember drinking an entire batch out of these from a unicorn teapot a couple months ago not exactly my smartest idea but fun at the same time LOL
Awesome twist on a classic recipe. Do you use a dry or sweet sparkling wine?
This guys sounds exactly like an older version of an art youtuber by the name of solar sands. Idk what it is, but I will never be able to get that out of my head while watching either of their videos now
What kind of sparkling wine did you use, dry, sweet, something else? I can't find it in the instructions
i got a shirt from spain that says cubai libre . didnt know that was a coktail
I watched a whole ad for you.
I tried the sparkling wine recipe, and I thought it had a lot of potential. However, I thought it was too dark to really make it a good take on a Cuba Libre. I tried adding a little lime juice, and it was just overpowering. Any ideas on brightening up the recipe to make it more of a summer/hot weather drink?
Ok! I have been trying to mak this drink although I can never seem to get the slow motion part correct. Can I have some tips on how to pour in slow motion
Damn you spilled a little
2:40 This technique is a serious game changer.
How much time do you reckon that cola syrup lasts in the fridge?
“Your professional stirring apparatus”
And that's why when I go out after you uploaded a video I feel disgusted with myself and the drinks I have xDD
I love rum and cola.
like the background's music
I don't know if it was you or Greg, but someone said any drink with sparkling wine can be improved with a dash of absinthe. Would you recommend that for this one?
I was wondering if you could do a "Designated Driver's drinks" special to show some love to the non-drinkers in the audience. Just because we don't/can't drink alcohol doesn't mean we're not thirsty.
I did a "mocktails" episode with 3 non-alcoholic cocktails, check it out czcams.com/video/KfxDK9Z5_No/video.html
I'm not sure how I missed that. Thanks.
We need more I think.
Can the fernet be replaced with something else if you don't have it? I doubt fernet branca can be used here as I guess it's too bitter?
Fernet Branca is a brand of fernet, certainly ok to use here!
Cocktail Chemistry aguante branca y coca
Do you prefer Luxardo over Fernet?
should try fernet branca, its the preferred brand in argnetina. Also if you happen to know could you explain the differences between the taste of branca and luxardo?
Would there be much of a point of using a smoke gun and bubbling the smoke up through some alcohol? Like, taking the hose and putting it at the bottom of a bottle to smoke an entire bottle of rum or something?
Can I get a clarification on how slow motion I need to pour the drink
Sippy cylinder is now what I will forever call a straw.
I mix mine, about a quarter of a glass with captain Morgan spiced rum, quarter glass of lime cordial and fill to the top with Pepsi max
SR “The Student Cuba Libre”
Could you suggest an alternative to Fernet? Would something like Montenegro work?
I heard of these from fear and loathing and Las Vegas
That movie is about the only time Bryan Brown managed to get into a big international movie. Apparently the reason he went no further in the American market was because he didn't want to raise his kids in the USA.
Addendum: Bryan Brown seems to have been the sort of actor who got into big movies that were filmed in Australia as well, so while it looks like "Cocktail" is the only significant overseas-filmed movie, there's a good few Aussie-filmed ones too.
Plz do a video on why you call it a sippy cylinder not a straw
should fernet and other amaros be refrigerated? should i avoid ordering cocktails from bars that don't refrigerate them?
Sippy cylinder is my new favorite phrase. Excuse me while I try to figure out how to work it into everyday conversation
Love your videos, but in this case, in Mexico la Cuba, Bacardi Blanco then Soda water and coke, you can go half and half and its called campechana but I like it pintada that tainted, that means Almost only Soda and at the end just a splash of coke and always with lime. You should try it
When making the cola syrup during the reduction, are you setting the burner on high, or medium heat?
Yeah I realized I omitted that detail in the video. Keep it at a simmer, it should take around 30 minutes for this volume
Cocktail Chemistry Thanks for the reply...can't wait to try this!
Would be nice to see a video about fernet and cola?
Talking about Cuba Libre while making a Nica Libre :-D
This channel reminds me of binging with babish
Hey uknow what? Could you do some examples of how fast you can pump out drinks out? Like put together cocktails but for real, not for visual effect
