Looking at the reality behind the widely circulated Sky News claim and why the rest of the globe appears to doubt Naomi Schiff's qualifications and expertise. It would be ideal to uncover some truth regarding the former W series driver. The Sky Sports analyst has recently faced some criticism on Twitter, questioning whether she is equipped to remark on the top level of racing.

A lot of the new F1 "fans" are definitely not qualified to comment on anything.
The new toxic F1 fans sadly came with the controversial Max's victory in Abu Dhabi 2021.
At least we can agree on that.... the vitriol from them, especially towards the succesful drivers.

ok but how many F1 analysts have actual F1 driving experience, let alone professional racing experience like Naomi? Even if you look at the official F1 channel and other major outlets covering F1, its filled with presenters that have little to no racing experience. And that doesn't just go for racing but for other major sports as well where presenters and analyst that have participated very little in the sport they specialize in covering.

You can add Crofty, Lazenby, Ted Kravitz & Rachel Brooke’s to that list…but when people are white, their credentials are never brought into question.

Ive been saying Exactly.that for a year or more. Journalist vs pundit. But the Naomi haters are too thick to admit to that.
I think she has been doing a good job. She asks good questions and seems to have good F1 knowledge.

My problem with her presenting is that she states the most obvious things with not real insight. I think any F1 fan with basic knowledge could do the same. Doesn't mean that i dislike her as it's nothing against her

With this comment now coming from Monza 2023 where she is part of the Sky Sports panel over the weekend, have to say she does discuss and ask the relevant things on the show. I was initially annoyed when she came on board last year as Sky weren't even hiding the fact that they were being woke and virtue signalling and it just came across as annoying when all we want is to enjoy the racing. It's even more annoying as well because they keep rotating who they have on for some race weekends and you can definitely see who the better punters are over others. I still believe though that Sky were rubbing their hands together when they first found out about her, had a few gigs doing some tv work after racing and clearly fits their agenda for hiring for 'diverse' reasons as she's black and female. She will never be able to escape that tag as that's just how it is.
I am all for F1 commentators who have experience/knowledge about racing cars, I have in the past heard new commentators come on and comment how 'really fast' the F1 cars are going, (down a speed restricted pit lane 🙄) and then go on to make antidotal comments whilst there was an overtaking battle going on the track.
The commentary is always better from someone who knows what it is like to race rather than someone who read a few books and watched a couple of videos, the only exception being Murray Walker who was an avid F1 fanatic who commentary was informative, interesting, exciting to listen too.
In my opinion the commentators today have a long way to go to match his enthusiasm for the sport.
There’s a difference between pundits, presenters, journalist/reporters and commentators.
The only one there that requires the person to have had first hand experience is the pundit role. That’s why they hire Brundle, Button, Hill, Chandhok, Rosberg etc. Ex Drivers and Champions who have experience in F1. Who know how the cars work, know what it’s like to race them and know what goes on within teams. The problem is, they’ve hired Schiff as a pundit when she has never raced higher than F4 level of single seater cars. She’s hired to give ‘expert’ opinion and analysis when she’s never even turned a wheel in an F2 car, let alone F1… How can her insight be of any value?
Would she not have been better in a Presenter role? She’s doing post race interviews for F1 broadcasting after all….
Simon Lazenby is a presenter. He asks the questions and directs the show. Karvitz and Pinkham are reporters and talk about rumours and news. They never claim to have expert knowledge of what drivers should and shouldn’t have done. Davidson and Chandhok are pundit/analysts who have both driven multiple seasons in F1 and completed vast behind the scenes testing and development for teams. They know the inside and out of an F1 car and how it works.
What does Schiff bring to the table as a pundit? Fans are not silly. They’re knowledgeable and passionate and they see through these things.
I’m sure she’s a great woman, and she’d make a terrific presenter. But after listening to her ‘punditry’ last season….. 🫤

David Croft has zero experience in motor racing. Yet we hear his voice more than anyone else's. Odd that people aren't complaining about him.
If you ask me, and no one did, it's nice to have a range of experience. An inexperienced person has the advantage of being a better representation of the average viewer. Not that Naomi is inexperienced.
Then there's people like Martin Brundle. He didn't exactly have a glowing F1 career, winning zero races, but he's a far better pundit than all the world champions and race winners like Hill and Herbert.

She does a decent job. Nothing special, but nothing worthy of criticism either. Not every pundit needs to be an ex-F1 driver.

Which is most of the time. How can I take her views as a F1 drivers series when she couldn't win in the W series?
My son raced against Naomi in Junior Karting where she showed a lot of boys the way around a race track. So to all you armchair/computer critics unless you have been racing competitively since childhood, keep your comments to yourself. FYI Brad Binder (Moto GP) was also racing karts in the same series with them at the time. Just remember Naomi you have lots of fans in South Africa.

Jeez with that type of strong opinion let’s hope your son is successful with his racing. Telling people to keep “their” opinions to themselves but yet have your own? ; let me tell you that is a recipe for failure, no team will want a gobby parent behind the driver they’re interested in. I have an opinion, I have been karting since I was 6, and at the age of 41 I still race competitively and have won many cups. My two children are just starting out in karting too and il support them but I’m not going to push them.
Between her and and a spot on SKY is a million male karters who have done it all and then some, raced in GT, F3/F2/F1 and don't get a job on tv. She was hired because she is A) A woman B)Black C) Very attractive, you decide in what order.

Clearly, the fact that she is black is a significant reason why she has the job. That being said, she is a former racer. She is knowledgable of the topic she is speaking of and she is well spoken. The fact that she is also beautiful is also a significant reason why she has the job but, that can be said about any number of female sports commentators.
I think Naomi should never give up on the W Series even though she came 17th.

She was hired to bring new face plus the topic at f1 is always gonna be colour no matter what organisation you go too they needed to show diversity ..Hamilton for example is the only black face ever in f1 which also shows why systematic racism is needed so we as a people should be trying to put that to bed

You see how ridiculous this video is, where is the video for Crofty, Lazenby, Rachel Brooke’s, Natalie Pinkham and Ted Kravitz having to justify their experience before they can be accepted as presenters. Good point. My sentiments exactly. So why should she have to prove her bonafides? We all know the reasons why and there are only two. Qualifications isn't one of them.
She hasn't yet earnt her motorsport & pundit presenting stripes to really warrant being part of the primary Sky F1 team... She remains a bit stiff, wooden, vague in comment & doesn't really impart any information or detail that isn't already out there... I think her ambition & desire to be an F1 poseur currently outweighs her talent... Ideally she needs a season or two with someone like the no-nonsense suffering John Hindhaugh & his Radio Le Mans team to hone her live motorsport presenting skills & certainly sharpen-up her on-air abilities...
Ben 4810. She's now had a year in the role, and proved that she is More than up to it. She is knowledgeable, articulate, professional, has a beautiful speaking voice, and looks way more interesting than Crofty or the others. So I think her worth is proven.

I think Naomi is doing an awesome job! However I can see where some accusations come from. PANDERING. It happens here in America with corporations and politicians. Being diverse for the sake of being diverse vs hiring someone to do the job based on merit or being qualified. Be diverse or you're accused of being racist. Did Naomi get the job based on merit or because of being a minority (minoroty being a woman in racing or of African descent...only 3% of UK citizens are of African descent). Im optimistic like to think she got it on merit. But you also have to ask if Naomi got the job over maybe a more qualified female because the color of her skin? It's a fair question to ask I think. I'm a minority myself, Mexican descent in Southern California. Go Checo! 😄
Merit as a race driver or merit as a tv expert? It can't be as a race driver. I haven't seen her on tv since I don't live in the UK so can't speak whether she is good or bad. But if she really isn't any good criticism will happen but also criticism will happen to anyone that get something they don't really deserve it happens at all types of jobs and has nothing to do with skin color or gender. But if she is great at what she do and still gets criticism then it's possible to use the "racist card" even if I think it's wrong to use it in most cases of criticism if someone isn't clearly using color as an argument.
But nowadays you aren't allowed to criticism minorities even if they are bad at what they do because no matter how objective your points might be it will always boil down to you being racist and not liking minorities.
I am curious have Karun Chandhok got any criticism? I think he is pretty good in his analyzes from what I have seen AND he has the merits. Sure he wasn't the best far from it but he has a couple of years in F1 at least.
But going with the video he should have got a lot of "hate" since he is of color.

It's quite obvious she got the job in part because they want to give a more inclusive image to the white male F1 bastion. But she's doing an excellent job and deserves her place as a F1 broadcaster, while paving the way for more women and people of colour in F1...
Why is it that obvious tho, view it all without the skin colour and she still be pretty excellent. You'r right tho, but anybody of colour getting put in a position with media attention immediately gets a view of being picked with the reason of an exclusive image. kinda a shame honestly

She was hired to fulfil an EDI quota. She's finding her feet very well in the role and there will be lots of other people better 'qualified' than her to talk about modern day F1 but it's silly to kid yourself that her sex and ethnicity were not important factors in why she was chosen. Good for her, I say, but pretending she was hired for her racing knowledge is just pandering to politically correct tosh. The fact that she is also very pretty should not be overlooked - because they didn't when they chose her. It's all about box ticking these days. As I say, good for her and I hope she continues to warm to her task.
Other presenters are not even racers or ex racers, they are presenters only so have had that particular type of training. Anyone can be taught about f1 as if you have enough passion and understand how things work then you can be good. Equal Ethnicity is a target to reach but calling it a quota undermines its aims and undermines the journey that the ex racers who have trained as journalists or presenters are on.

She presented "Police Interceptors" & Tennis Masters, "World Cuppa" FIFA 2006 on Radio 5, and has been on Jeremy Vine's tv panel. Where are the racing credentials? Track experience? At least Naomi has track driving history, - but all the morons don't want to acknowledge that.

Unqualified... how? And what is it exactly, that makes one "qualified?" Her job is as a broadcaster, not a racer.
Having some background in what you're broadcasting about is a nice-to-have but not a necessity. All over the sporting world you'll find no end of people in the broadcasting business who've never competed in the sport they're covering.
Jamie Little is a fixture on NASCAR broadcasts and she's never turned a wheel. I don't hear anyone griping about her. Likewise, there are plenty of people broadcasting who have extensive experience in their sport but absolutely suck at broadcasting. They're as dull and lifeless as dish water and they can't explain anything without either talking down to their audience or so far above them that their point doesn't get across.
Some people are just not fulfilled at all unless they're bitching about something. If there's nothing legitimate around to bellyache about, they'll make something up.
No more relevant than Brundle, in 12 years he never won a race let alone a championship yet he carries on like a major player.

There’s a big difference between Pundits and Presenters…. You cannot compare Schiff to Kravitz! 💀 One is trying to be a pundit/expert, and the other is purely a journalist/reporter!
If I pay a premium subscription for Sky Sports F1, I expect the pundits to be experts on F1. That’s why I can always rely on the opinions of Brundle, Button, Davidson, Chandhok, Hill and Rosberg, all of whom have driven at the highest level and even won world championships. So I don’t understand how Schiff can stand alongside them and claim to have any real insight when she’s never really driven anything above F4 level, which is basically an entry level to single seater racing for kids.
I’ve seen a few of the other pundits, like Button, give her a bit of a side eye and even correct her when she’s been talking about how an F1 car reacts under braking etc. this is not a good look and fans can see through it….
She’s more effective as a presenter. She’s fine in the interviews and growing in confidence on screen. And if we really must have ‘representation’ on screen, then put her in a presenter role.

I think the "qualified" discussion is a red herring. If she was designing bridges or performing surgical operations, I would definitely be concerned with her qualifications. But this is broadcasting, it's not putting lives at risk. The only question I have is if someone can do the job or not.
I have no problem with her interviews with drivers/managers, etc. I'd give her an average or even slightly above average grade. There are many ex-F1 drivers that are TERRIBLE at this. Fortunately, they're mostly relegated to the podium spot interviews directly after the race.
The only issue I have with Naomi is her analysis comments. Just about everything she says is both obvious and vague. Will she get better? Maybe. Should she be given the chance? Yes, but she should be getting less air-time doing analysis work until she can do the job. Sky has many other commentators that are excellent at analysis, so I'm perplexed why they are getting far less air-time than her.
Even though it's pretty clear they put her in for diversity it doesn't mean that means she's any less qualified or that she deserves any criticism on her abilities. She's a racing driver and thus in a position where she can give valuable input. So what is this even about? I can honestly not figure out what kinda critism people really have other than the racism they hide by coating it in other criticisms
People speak themselves and shape their own lives into existence, negative words are not a reflection of Naomi, they are a reflection of a person's state of mind who are saying them. The more negativity you speak the more negativity you will draw into your own lives.

Seems ashame that yet another female driver isn't actually driving anymore at such a young age. The industry should be pushing to get these drivers into their cars not putting up barriers so all thar is left is to talk about it. Are we ever going to see a female F1 driver in this modern era. Of all the talk & chat this still hasn't happened. These girls just get put in their own series hoping it keeps them quiet. Never mind about them being mechanics or technicians or journalists wouldn't it be nice to see them driving the actual cars.

I agree with you about Naomi doing an exceptional job on TV. I said last year that she shouldn’t have given up on racing. W series has now finished, but now there’s the F1 Series. Look at our 3 times W series champion she’s now in the US preparing herself for the next level.
She does an amazing job! Very articulate and asks all the right questions. I’m not one for just hiring people for the sake of it but when it’s warranted just leave them be. She’s great for the sport and does a great job end of!

Nathalie Pinkham's broadcast career has consisted of "The Wright Stuff" panel, commentating on Winbledon, and "Poker Stars" - as well as hosting "Police Interceptors" & broadcasting on Radio 5 for FIFA 2006. Where is her race track experience? Naomi may have come from W series, but that gave her a base from which to start, and one year later, she is a proficient, articulate and knowledgeable presenter. And she is more attractive than Kravitz, Crofty or Nathalie!
I think she is great! She seems to ask great questions and respond to the answers with intelligence.

What she accomplished ? According to this video and Wiki not that much:
1st in the Clio Cup China Series (which I have never heard off before)
2nd in her only race in the 24 Hours of Zolder - Class 2
2nd in her only race in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring - Cup X
And some podiums during events she is not officially qualified for.
Her one year (2019) in the W Series haven't been all that special as well. In comparison to the other people in there.
But besides that I like her more in her commentator role then for instance Danica Patrick.
I think Naomi is the best addition to the Sky F1 reporting team ever , she clearly knows her subject inside out her interviews are full of proper racing technical questions , Oh and she is absoloutly georgeous :-)

Sky F1 is dreadful. She's one of the best of a very bad lot.
That's not to say if she worked somewhere else that she wouldn't be very good.
Naomi does her work perfectly well. She's easy on the eyes and ears and she knows what she's talking about. Miss Schiff is definitely a keeper.
She is just bad... Period.

I don't think you can compare a presenter to an expert in that the video compared Naomi to Crofty and the other ones. Presenters brings the show forward and don't need to have any background or real knowledge about the sport where an expert has to have some kind of background to give credaility to their expert opinions. I mean as an example I couldn't take any experts opinion on F1 serious if they only had experience of grassroot racing. I am not saying they still couldn't have good opinions but the background gives the opinion weight.
I don't think diversity hire is a good thing since the person aren't there on merit but basically mostly on how they are born to push for political stuff and I think that is where any backlash comes from. I think to over come that you have to perform even better to show that you belong where you are. But since I don't watch Sky F1 broadcast too much I can't really speak about here but more in general. And the "hate" she get might be compared to the "hate" some race drivers gets who are in F1 because of their dad or money and don't have the merit to really be in F1.
But they said she has no experience and the video proves that to be false, if we were to use your logic only, then we would say that Naomi's opinion would carry more weight because she has done more than most so far

But what I mean is in a setting like a professional broadcast like Sky and compare her to the other experts that has either many years in F1 or being champions in F1 her merits fall flat in comparison, imo. I don't say she couldn't make great points but if say Jenson Button and Naomi would say the same thing I would take his words more as true based on his experience with racing at the absolute highest level. I would think the same if the example would be a GP2 vs a former F1 driver.
Anyway that is just my take talking about experts and merits and has nothing to do with her being a woman and all that.
You all make fair comments. But where are the notes about Nathalie Pinkham? Here is a presenter that is was only there to bring a female into the team. With no disrespect to her - but her experience ranges from sitting on "The Wright Stuff" daytime tv panel, hosting "Police Interceptors" & "Poker Stars" - and working on FIFA 2006 for Radio 5! Where is her track experience? Where is her background in motor racing - nevermind F1?
No. I'm sorry, but even if Naomi's racing credentials are "only" W series - it doesn't matter. She is track experienced, articulate, knowledgeable, & very well spoken. And after a year, she is now a valid member of the team -- And the best looking one.

But as far as Natalie Pinkham I don't think she needs to know or have experience of racing since she is only a presenter and interviewer. That I think makes it very different so she only has to make segments and such interesting while Naomi is an expert.
Anyway I on occasion watch the Sky broadcast but I think Naomi has grown on me in terms of her expert opinions. I mean she presents her view well and interesting. So I don't mind her being in the panel. 👍

But then again, all the presenters are interviewing, and commenting - But it's only Naomi that.seems to be getting the flak for "not having any credentials" -- and that annoys me, because there are others on the team who have less right to be there than she does. Naomi is doing a good job, after 10 months on the team, and has settled into it well. But even if another year goes by, some armchair F1 experts will Still be moaning that she is there, just because she is a Black female, with no experience, which is Wrong.
Those who say she's not qualified to give her analysis really haven't got a clue what they're talking about. I get so sick of "armchair experts" who think they know better than professionals who either work in F1 or in the broadcasting sphere. Naomi is qualified! End of.

@craigpurdie3528 There are plenty of pundits and ex F1 drivers that Sky F1 could have gone with on there Sky team alone they have Brundle, Button, Hill, Herbert and Rosberg and I'm sure they could have contacted any ex F1 driver and they'd of agreed to drive Sennas car, you're talking as if Naomi is fast lol she couldn't even win in the W series do you know how bad that makes her? Those woman aren't even fast enough for Formula 3 and yet she can't win in W series to put it in football terms she's Tamworth Town and every single driver from Formula 3 and onwards is Man City next to her, the only reason she has the Sky job is because of Hamiltons witch hunt from 2020 and onwards for box ticking which triggered Sky to make changes
