@@Charon58 This is so incorrect. Just because a bike can do 120 around a curve doesn't mean you need to do that every turn to be able to "handle the bike" anyone with basic grasp of traction and respect for the power can "handle" this bike. It's an extremely tame ride if you stay below 8-9 grand. you're still "handling the bike" because you know that for the conditions of the road you cannot be giving it full throttle at 55° lean angle. Just because someone can't out brake a motogp champion and doesn't drag elbows every turn doesn't mean they shouldn't get a liter bike. I've had plenty of fun on my S1000XR whilst also staying safe. There are definitely faster riders than me but i've not once thought "I can't handle this bike" and it is heavier and snappier than most 1000cc super sports out there. There are a lot of creature comforts that come from being on a bigger faster bike and even if someone will outride you on a 300 doesn't mean you'd want a 300 over a 600cc or 1000cc just because that bike is CAPABLE of posting faster lap times than YOU ever will. 2:24 in the video summs this up perfectly just because you "Can't ride faster than 70" on the motorway I guarantee you 90% of 300cc owners have broken that and anyone with a liter bike will at least once hit 150 even if you technically can't...

I just wanted to thank you for being deadly honest about not only the capabilities of the R1, but also the limitations and hazards of the bike. My son was one of those that wanted his R1 modified (exhaust, tune, tires, frame sliders, etc...). I have been a motorcycle rider all my life that started with dirt bikes. Due to 2 close near death experiences involving other drivers while driving my street bike when I was about 20, I have always encourage my boys (5) not to ride street bikes. The one thing that is rarely discussed is the stupidity of other drivers!! My son was riding his R1 when a stupid driver made a left hand turn in front of him while driving a motorhome. He had no place to go as there was a Fed. Marshal vehicle to his left. It was a 5 lane highway with a left turn center lane. My son was in the slow lane and everything was caught on dash-cam video. The marshal stated that my son was not horsing around what-so-ever but had the sun in his eyes and was in the Marshal's blind spot so he didn't see the motorhome make the turn until it was too late. My son didn't survive the impact! The marshal stated that the only reason that he was able to stop in time because he was able to read the other driver and determined that he wasn't going to stop or yield.
I say all of this to say thank you for driving smart. I did see you hit 71 mph for about 3 sec, and you are right it is very hard not to hit the throttle on a R1. Those biles are really fun, but "generally speaking" it isn't the motorcycle rider that is the issue....it is the stupid drivers that don't look, don't care, and never think of the families that are destroyed. So....I would love to see a video that discusses the issue of stupid drivers, and how to protect us as motorcycle riders (special led lights that flash and warn drivers, defensive driving, and the proper gear). FYI, my son had ALL his gear on; Shoei carbon helmet, Dainese jacket and pants with the air vest, and gloves. He was a safe rider like most of you are! Mike

I did a tons of mods on it - changed sprockets to shorten gearing, took out AIS, put full exhaust on (MIVV), remapped it etc. How bloody misguided. In the end, I succeeded in making an already savage bike so brutal to ride in the street that it actually began to scare me. The bike laughed at my skills and my limits. Cruising on it was borderline unpleasant as it demanded a total hammering every ride. R1 basically rode me more than I rode it and I was always expecting to end up in court if coppers ever spotted me. All in all, it just became too much and I sold it. What a bike, though, what a gorgeous, amazing bike. Still miss it every day.

I agree, but for a different reason. Most R6 and R1 riders don't even have the capability to maximize the R3. They are straight line riders who have no idea how to handle a bike if they have trouble at high speed. Some idiots says begin riding on the R1 without understanding the bike can kill them because they don't know how to handle it. I started riding in the 1970s with much less power, but my bike could kill me so easily with the type of power it had. It could accelerate from 0-60 and back to zero in a short block. I had the opportunity to buy a big yammer, but chose the Triumph Sprint RS instead. Why? It was because the handling on the bike was so smooth, and so was the 955i engine.

ride a bike for 20+ years and by then your mind already knows which gear you are, everytime you move the clutch and your feet. The funny thing is, you can also tell which gear you are in just by how much rev and engine break the bike is doing when you close the throttle. veteran riders don't need to look where the gears are at, they can actually feel it.

I think its very worth mentioning that few of the older 1000s save for some carb'd models really don't have much pull up until they come on cam at 10k+ rpm depending on model so you have nothing happening nothing happening and then all a sudden its a massive rush of power as the bike hits peak torque and you most likely lose it as a first timer or beginner. So its a deceptive powerband that lulls you into a false sense of security thinking you can handle the bike when in reality on most rides you are not even tapping into the bike's actual potential. With newer 1000s like the GSXR 1000 and the S1000RR they have variable valve timing that has them hit higher torque lower down which make them more fun around town but is also a bit of a no no for newer riders.
