The best line in the movie is: They only see what they want to see. Why is that? Because that is the viewer's perspective throughout the whole move - we are only seeing what we want to see, which makes the reveal at the end so much more satisfactory.

THAT was his last breath, THAT was the very moment he died. She didn't hear him say "it doesn't even hurt any more" because he was already a ghost saying it. Also, I bet the damn door to the basement is blocked, because she could hear him there after his death, going through books, papers, audio tapes, so she blocked it because she was feeling crazy. How she's cold every time he's near, how she went to their italian restaurant for their anniversary, means he's dead for a year now.
    Best twist ever!

    • @happyninja42
      @happyninja42 Před 2 měsíci +64

Not just going through the basement, but also the door to the basement suspiciously opening on it's own. It's likely he didn't close it all the way, given how often he would call up to her from the basement, implying he left it open so they could yell at each other across the house.
What I loved was how well they handled the "nobody directly addresses him in the scene, but the framing of it still IMPLIES to the audience that he was part of the conversation." My favorite being the shot of him and the mom sitting in those chairs when the boy comes home. They are looking at each other (but she's just staring off into the other room, thinking), and then they both turn to look at him, like they had been talking about him. Not a word is shared between them, but the framing suggests it. It was just so well done.

One of the things I found neat about the premise of this film, is the idea that the "unfinished thing" that is always what tethers ghosts to our world, in storytelling, was how it was framed in this film. he was just like every other ghost. He had something he deeply regretted in life that he didn't do right, and that he needed to fix to move on. But it just so happened to be dealing with a child who was suffering from seeing ghosts, just like his last patient that killed himself AND him. And so he ends up being tethered to another child the same way, because that's ultimately how he can "move on." And how the 2 of them end up being perfect for each other. He's a ghost that isn't scary, can actually help the child, and in doing so, be given the clues he needs to resolve his own unfinished work, and move on. It was just so wonderfully done.

Honestly as famous as the twist is it’s not like “No, I am your father” where the twist is given away in the quote. Follow the color Red.
Every time we see it, a ghost is near.
For me this required a second viewing.
Saw it in theaters but watched again when it came on the movie channels so I could pay attention to all the little clues that I missed along the way.
This is the only movie that I can remember people telling their friends, ‘no, I’m not gonna tell you about it, you have to see it for yourself.’
Talk around town was, Have you seen it yet? Yes it was really good (wink, nod and smile).
If anyone around us looked confused, we knew they hadn’t seen it yet and that ended the conversation about the movie. We managed to keep the twist as quiet as possible to not spoil it for the new watchers.
Ordinarily we didn’t care if we gave spoilers away because everyone was bound to watch it sooner or later anyway.
With one movie, M. Night changed that.
He’s the reason we have the phrase Spoiler Alert (at least in my circles).
Suddenly people started asking themselves, do I want to be surprised or do I want to know as much about it as I can beforehand. Do I need to know if there’s a happily ever after? Do I need to solve a mystery before the full story unfolds on screen? Am I supposed to be looking for signs or just be entertained?
He has a unique way of directing us through a story, almost like a dark magician showing his greatest trick.
You see and feel what he wants you to see and feel until he decides to reveal the prestige or the last 5 pieces of the puzzle.
Always thought provoking and discussion worthy subject matter.

It really was a great surprise, one that I instinctively didn’t want to spoil for anyone else. Easier said than done, since I went to see it opening weekend by myself and no one I knew saw it for at least a week. It was hard to casually urge everyone to watch it without giving away the fact that there was a plot twist. I think part of the reason I didn’t want to give anything away is that I wanted to see if other people would guess what was happening. I’m usually pretty good at picking up on foreshadowing but on this one I didn’t guess that Malcolm had died at the beginning. I thought at some point it would become personal for him. Maybe he or his wife would die and Cole would deliver a message to the other. When I realized he was dead at first I wondered if he had just been killed in an accident on the way home.
What a great movie! And just about everyone who saw it wanted to go back and see it again, doubling the ticket sales.

They intentionally minimized Malcolm’s moments with his wife. We only see one scene of the two of them together after the opening scene. He never attempts to confront her about the “other man” or anything of that nature he just mentions things are different between them. Even the scene when she’s showering and he finds her medicine he doesn’t attempt to talk to her. So it’s not so much we believe she’s giving him the silent treatment. The movie gives us minimum information. What gets me though is most people are so invested in Cole they fail to realize that Malcolm doesn’t interact with anyone but Cole throughout the movie.

    M. Night Shyamalan is such a good director. He gives you hints throughout the movie, if you watch it a second time you’ll see them. All of his movies are like this, Signs, The Happening, and Unbreackable are the same. He does such a good job at showing you what’s really happening but not giving it away until the end! If you like The Six Sense, you’ll like all his others. He also appears in a lot of his movies. He’s the paediatric Doctor in this one and the neighbour in Signs and the drug dealer in Unbreackable.

I remember seeing this in the cinema and being completely floored ... and then I watched it another four or five times thinking that I would love to see everyone else's reactions, but ended up being engrossed by it every time. Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment were utterly brilliant in this movie!

I saw the movie with no foreign knowledge, and it totally fooled me. When the moment of revelation came, I responded with a mental face palm. It was great work by M. Knight. He has spent the rest of his career chasing that gold ring that he snagged on his first try.

I’ve seen this movie many times since it came out, because after the first shock, and finding out he was dead I wanted to review all the parts to see if something was a mistake, but nothing was. The producer did a great psychological job with the viewers , understanding how the mind works and play tricks on us. We tend to fill out gaps of information with the things that we know or assume will fill the gap.
For example: there is a scene when Cole comes back from school and his mother is sitting in front of the doctor. The viewer automatically assumes they were talking to each other about Cole’s situation, and when Cole comes , she leaves them alone to talk and goes to prepares coles food. In reality not one word is said between the mother and the doctor.
Another scene that’s tricky and ignored by the viewer is after the kids in the birthday party put him in the dungeon and Cole collapsed out of fear. Once in the hospital, the mother places a call…our minds immediately assumes she is calling the doctor, instead she is calling the mother of one of the kids in the party.
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen and certainly the one with the most shocking ending.

Just had 4 people walk into my business while I was watching this reaction video. Paused it and asked if they had seen 6th sense. 3 had and 1 had not. The guy who hadn't was in his early 20s and he asked me what the movie was about. I just told him it was a great movie about a child psychologist trying to help a troubled little boy and it had a great ending. (I didn't mention it was a twist.) There are plenty of people who haven't seen it or know about it. Especially in the younger generation.

  • @bradleyj.fortner2203

That second girl caught on quick. I caught on during the scene where the boy says "I see dead people". In that moment I remembered the beginning, remembered a lot of what the movie shows you here, and just put it together. You can tell she did the same thing. She keeps looking at him to see if he's caught up yet, and when he does, his mind is blown. Probably the best reaction in my opinion.
