I was a buick service Technician back in 1989 when that came out. You could get that as an option on the Reatta and Riviera. If you go to the climate control menu and hold down OFF and WARM at the same time, it will put you in service diagnostic mode and you can pull Trouble codes and monitor live engine data better than any scan tool. This is NOT in the owners manual, but WAS in the service manuals we got at the dealers.
Ken Jones. hi I have a 88 rivera and one day I was in my car getting ready to go somewhere and I just started pushing buttons like an idiot, anyways the monitor said I was low on coolant so I turned off the car to check it out.it wasn't low.I get back in to start the car and NOTHING.it won't start can you help
I owned a 1988 Reatta, black with tan interior, and drove it over 200,000 miles. When I sold it in 1997, it was still in great shape. Keyless entry (years before any production car), digital controls and personalization, electronic everything, this car was SO far ahead of its time. I've since owned BMWs, Mercedes-Benz, AMG... My Reatta still ranks as one of the best cars I've ever owned. It was an incredible automotive achievement.
Today, i got my packet from USA - and i got my "new" CRT-unit. Now my old Buick working again. The first on-screen message = "I love you" :D Someone old Calender-message from 1987, but BUICK wanted to tell me that B. loves me: because the new spare-parts.
And thank you for showing this. I was looking because when I was 10 or so in the late 80’s I remember how blown away I was by that futuristic technology. Being a young boy, cars and electronics like that were fascinating, and I never forgot about it. I’m glad yours is in perfect shape, just ridiculous that was from the late 80’s and GM had the worst electronics after that up till very recently. I see the Cadillac Escala as a concept is just a newer version of this! 30 years! And it’s the same with obvious updates. Unreal. GM really is lucky they didn’t die completely in the bust. If they weren’t forced to make changes, I am fairly sure they would be by now.
Just think, GM also had a prototype for an EV the same year which let to a record 200MPC in 1999. GM, great engineers, clowns for executives seeing the future.
actually it was standard on both the Riviera beginning model year 1986 and the Reatta when it came out for '88. Buick ditched it for more traditional controls on both cars for 1990.
lol im just like you,i was thinking to buy the 89 jaguar xjs,but im scare these young ppl in that racing stuff they will be like"shit look a jaguar with V12,bye bye car!this car is amazing!
Remember when this thing was very quickly removed from production by the brand manager after he found himself in oncoming traffic and almost getting hit head on. while messing with these klunky pieces of junk. He returned to his office at the tech center, made a few phone calls and IMMEDIATELY had them removed from the GM line up. Screen was a total cluster screw. Ones today sure as heck aren't much better.
in mpg this one is better than the xjs,the xjs is 11mpg street and 19 highway, but it is a v12,i dont mind im still single,no kids, but not sure yet,all i know is i want an old car, real steel
mine is starting to bug out at the quarter bottom part of my screen. are these prone to go out? I'm scared and I don't know how much it would be to repair it. this problem doesn't happen often and my diagnostic center has went off ever since my radio Antenna got stuck trying to go down could that he the result of that or could it be a more deeper issue? I'm so confused because this is such a nice car but I rather not give it up

That honor would probably go to the Buick Riviera, which came out with the touch screen for the 1986 model year. The Buick Reatta debuted for the 1988 model year.
I had a 1988 Reatta for almost 10 years. The screen NEVER failed EVER. That car was solid. Mostly handmade. Incredible craftsmanship, especially for the price and the times.
This is more technologically advanced than my 2008 Civic.

It's like a pip-boy for your car. Coolest thing ever.
Micah Montoya Lol yeah, the green reminds me of a Pip Boy.
This footage is from 2012 makes you feel like it's the 90's crazy.
At least 20 years ahead of it's time. Amazing
Once upon a time, PC screens looked like this too. And there was no such thing as "Windows". Imagine that!

It's the Nissan GT-R screen of the 1980's; Ahead of its time.
OMG! Such advanced technologies! (For over 20 years ago...)

Lol im looking to buy one too, I have an 05 GTO and i want a Reatta now is so sick.

The touchscreen reminds me of a Corley Motors truck, or the Vulture's cargo plane.
Years ago I showed this to my mom and she was so puzzled she almost said the f word. She said “What the fuc-?”. XD

how many you payd for this jewel?
Paulie and Christopher pull up to discuss politics and to gently remind him of some money he must’ve forgotten to pay back.
