- There's a legend that during the 16th century, Spanish ponies from a sinking galleon swam ashore to the island of Assateague, Virginia. Today, once a year, men from neighboring Chincoteague Island gather for one of the most unusual roundups.
Our family used to watch this show all the time. I think we saw every episode. We would eat T.V. dinners as we watched. It was a special treat, but we had to get our homework done first. Good incentive. :o) Mom was smart.
My mom used to bowl on sunday nights, and I would sit at the bar and watch Wild Kingdom while the barkeep brought me cokes on the house. Thank you for everything, sir.
My oldest son has always wanted to own one of these magnificent equine, but we’ve not yet had the money with which to do so.
However, we have found out that the bitless bridle is best to use with them, and because they are descended from the ones that survived the wrecking of a Spanish galleon that was enroute to Peru sometime in the 16TH Century, we think that the best kind of a saddle to use with them is the Charro saddle because some of them centuries ago might have interbred with the native horses of Spain. As for the main reason of us wanting one or more of these is because my oldest son thinks that they’ll make good cattle herding horses.
Been there a few times. Heard once that one of the horses actually crossed the bridge leading to the island. Beautiful place and seeing the horses was really nice.
A friend of mine accompanied me and my oldest son to Chincoteague Island in 2011. Let me tell you, it was a marvelous wonderful time, and although we make a purchase, we enjoyed ourselves just the same.
My family went to the Pony Penning the year this was filmed. We have several pictures of Marlin riding among the ponies.
I only wish that I could possibly get my grandchildren to come to Chincoteague Island to witness the event, and providing if I’ve saved enough money, I’d even buy each one of them a Chincoteague Pony of their very own.
Always watched as a kid

A little bit of over kill on the roundup...lol
Probably from the black yearling colt trampling the flower beds.
