Some of their presentation on "animal intelligence" is a bit misleading or relying on general conclusions or assuming that all species within a certain "tier" are going to be the same. And this is not the case... Take for example, tests regarding reflections... Many animals have been known to think that when they see themselves in a mirror, they think their reflection is another animal. CZcams has a short of this in which a bear comes up on a mirror in the woods and attacks the mirror thinking the bear he saw was another bear that startled him. Yet, some animals can recognize their own reflection, and among these animals is the Magpie, a species of bird... which under the tier list they use, shouldn't have been able to recognize its own reflection when a bear couldn't. There can also be cases of mimicry where one species of animal has learned to mimic the calls of other animals. Various species of parrots and parakeets have mastered this... as have ravens, although, ravens have not necessarily been as willing to demonstrate the ability as parrots and parakeets. While this may not be a sign of "higher" intelligence, there would have to be some level of cognition going on that is beyond basic instinct. And among birds, some of this could serve as a distraction to either intimidate predators or potential rivals. And at times this hasn't been limited to birds. Bengal Tigers in India have been known to mimic the call of Sambar Deer, an animal they regularly prey on... and biologists have also noted that the Sloth Bear has learned this... as their observations have noted that these bears become MORE alert at the sound of a Sambar Deer's call, regardless of whether or not a Sambar Deer has actually made the call. This has shown some measure of learning in two different carnivorans. One, the tiger, has found a way to lure prey to it while the other, the bear, knows the tiger's trick and will be hesitant in order to avoid being on the menu. They've also presented issues in thinking that these tiers apply across the board in every group... as though the tiers are the same as taxonomy, which is not the case. For example, whales and dolphins... I.E. cetaceans have been found to be very intelligent animals in their own right, and with many cases finding them to be on par with primates, if not surpassing many of them, in certain respects. They've proved quite trainable, and some scientists have even observed that dolphins raised in captivity have even taught WILD dolphins some of the same tricks the former captive dolphins learned from man. Which shows they can both learn and consciously teach. One would then thin, that based on the tier list they use that whales and dolphins would be primates based on that intelligence... They aren't. Whales and dolphins are actually closer to elephants and hippopotamus in terms of their taxonomic placement on the animal family tree. All of which shows that things are NOT linear between any or all animal species or groupings.
