I've had great difficulty finding a professional in Washington state to assist my now 27 year old daughter. She is currently off medication. Do you know anyone in Seattle and vicinity that she could see? I do really like your videos and I also am diagnosed with ADHD, taking medication and being served well by the VA. I recommend your series to professionals because many only have a cursory overview of ADHD and have prejudicial views about medication.

Totally! We delve into lots of info but hate doing exams or filling in forms. Our brain seems to shut down. And we don't just delve into professional literature about our ADHD lol. Right now my bed time reading is about planet Mars 'The Red Planet' and it's fascinating. At school, anything they tried to teach me was horrible and stressful but wandering off and delving into things on my own is great fun. I still couldn't sit an exam though. My brain would stall and the answers would finally come through just when I need them the least 😉

Except for us oddballs that happen to be very interested in various medical articles or other articles of interest and can get hyper-focused, reading for hours [when it is something you don't HAVE to read, that is!]. The problem is, I forget that I lose all of my ADHD tribe, leaving my excessively long comments, having trouble weeding out and getting to the point. I seriously believe I have ADHD AND SCT.

The majority of people on the planet do not enjoy doing those things which is why those of high intelligence and discipline do it for a living or for a hobby

Thank you so so much. You're a legend in the ADHD community. Your content has been recommended to me so many times, and I got my bro (also ADHD diagnosed) hooked on you as well. Finding the videos of your talks lead me to get tested and treated for ADHD for the first time, at 34 years old.
I now feel confident that I can pursue so many of the unfinished goals and aspirations that I've struggled and failed to attain my entire adult life.
My new baby daughter also now has a higher-functioning, more mindful, and more self-aware father thanks to that treatment.
So, I just wanted to take a minute to say thank you for being an excellent communicator and dedicated advocate for us, Dr Barkley.
It means the world to so many of us to now have the necessary tools to get our lives back.

I can see impairment clearly in how easily I was distracted today by everything while attempting to practice walking as part of my stroke recovery therapy. I was reacting to every noise in spite of working as hard as I can and loving walking more than anything. My therapist was right behind me telling me to "Try and stay focused on walking", as if I was not already fighting distraction as hard as possible.

I’ve had “impairment” level ADHD since college, and didn’t truly start to understand the mechanisms and proper treatment pathways until over a decade later…but your work has had a PROFOUND positive effect on the acceleration of this journey, both for myself and how to begin early intervention for my toddler son..just started creating the “ADHD-friendly scaffolding” for his environment as of a couple days ago as you have described in other videos, and that alone has done wonders..can’t wait to review even more of your work and implement more.
Thank you for your dedication both during and after your career.

Your definition of 'disorder' is very concise, a lot of people take offence to it because they interpret it from a different context. You explain what the term 'disorder' implies in a psychiatric context which is not at all insulting, especially to someone who is struggling despite their best efforts and intentions. I am late diagnosed ADHD-C and come across a lot of people in my support networks who hate the 'disorder' part of the label. I've never taken exception to it because I knew I was smart but somehow disabled at the same time so unable to really use, harness or put into practice my talents, intellect or potential. It was not only a great disappointment for my teachers and parents but, really, the greatest disappointment, stress and anguish was for me.
I hated that my school reports regularly stated 'careless mistakes'. That hurt. Yes, I jump the gun rather a lot... but I am most definitely not lacking in care and empathy is unbearably abundant. In fact I care too much and have often been told that I wear my heart on my sleeve. So being told you're careless if you have ADHD is like a kick in a very precious part of yourself.
Being late diagnosed (at age 46) is not easy. The medication does help (I would describe it as subtle but significant) but you also face a huge learning curve and it's really uncomfortable facing your deficits all over again (that you never overcame. Up until now you just found an environment where you were so naturally adept that impairments would not be so terribly noticeable so you could wing it. But to wing it, when you have ADHD, you have to burn the candle at both ends. And at the end of it all, you have nothing really to get you through the next stages in life despite working crazy hours and always being the first to put out a fire.
As regards 'labels'. ADHD whilst not being as concise as we'd like, is the most polite one I've had. Before my official diagnosis, I was verbally beaten down with labels; 'Lazy' "Scatty' 'Space cadet' 'Careless' 'Needs to pay attention' 'Daft as a brush' 'Can't walk and chew gum' 'will be late for her own funeral'

Thanks! I like the term self-regulation disorder or executive functioning disorder but those will not be adopted at least anytime soon for political and legal reasons. ADHD appears in too many regulations now to change the name and lose such access to services.

At 64 and a life time of exhaustion, I am not sure how I will make it another 2 1/2 years [with not a lot to live off of since I had to cut my hours in half 4 yrs ago, just to stay sane and keep up].

This past February one of your lectures appeared and stayed over several months in my CZcams ‘Recommended for you’ section at the top of the page, despite the fact that the video was 3 hrs long. If you knew my CZcams feed, you would know this is not normal, especially for such a long video. When it appeared I was like, 3hrs, LOL, maybe if this were a rock concert or work music. But it just wouldn’t disappear. So at 40 I lifted the lid but learning about this disorder is kind of a special Pandora’s box in that it shows you the pandemonium you already know, just in a different light. And anyway, you are kind of like a rock star to us :D

And, see, that is the part that oddly does NOT apply to me [?]. On top of that, for 18 years, I was married to someone with diagnosed/untreated ADHD [since childhood and he DID get in accidents, etc.!]. Guess who got to be in charge of paying bills etc. in that marriage [and I did an excellent job of it throughout my life, in spite of my cognitive SCT like struggles and diagnosed C-ADHD]. I should add, for most of those years, that was also done unmedicated. I learned coping skills from my dad, no doubt [sink or swim era....you had better find a way not to be late!]. Consequences were swift. Maybe THAT WAS the early intervention in my case.

I am so happy to have seen your channel and wish you the best in your retirement! I am so glad for the game changer you bought to adhd and the different speeches you have done. I am so grateful for your work and very recently the last day or so got your book on taking charge off your adhd. I also found the knowledge separate from performance so empowering! I really am so appreciative off your passion for this and even in your retirement ensuring that we remain up to date with all the information. Thanks Dr. Thanks to your work and your very concise and sharp explanations I´ve found my ADHD. Here in Argentina many many professionals are just so behind in this field, and they only see this as "can you focus or not" thing. Dismissing the emotional complexity it has. Many times I´ve been denied diagnosis and treatment. Your work has been my compass, it allowed me to express my symptoms with such precision that I was finally heard. Starting treatment with Concerta and working on many lifestyle changes to help and care for my mind. 30 years old btw. Survived this long due to being hyper intelligent and extremely self-aware. Also, because I managed to work on a field that deeply interests me and is really adhd-friendly. When looking back, symptoms were just so clear, yet so masked by my self-awareness. Meditation, psylocibin, sports, and ayurvedic-inspired diet and practices have been lifesaving. I can´t thank you enough, you´ve made my life better.

Thank you for all these amazing videos. I am also a late diagnosis 'Combined' type female and your work has been so helpful to me. I have a Molecular Biology background so these science and evidence based videos are music to my ears. I have a question regarding current research into metabolic causes of Psychiatric Disorders, for example by those by Dr Chris Palmer. I have just come across his claims that Ketogenic diets can essentially 'cure' all psychiatric disorders and I was hoping to hear your views on this regarding ADHD specifically but also any other thoughts on it more broadly. Thank you again for all you do.

Dr Barkley thank you for all you do. Your lecture series is a much-needed wake-up call for clinicians and therapists, as well as adults who have ADHD and parents with children who have it (who are often at least one parent having it themselves). Your work on ADHD, and your clear and focused method of delivering understanding (to something so misunderstood by the medical and therapy establishment, in the past) for ADHD has made a huge difference in my life. And so many others. I am so glad you are still following the research, and giving us your thoughts on it. Clinicians and therapists: do not ignore this leader's words on one of the most easily-treatable disorders. Thank you, again, Dr Barkley. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Firstly Dr Barkley - thank you. For doing what you do.
We all really appreciate you! 😊
I’m a 49 year old woman who was diagnosed with ADHD 3 years ago. It was one of the most vindicating moments of my life and it really did explain a lot!!!
The only reason I got diagnosed was because both my kids got diagnosed through (thankfully) one of their teachers noticing my son had zero recollection of things she’d taught in class the day before.
I’m in New Zealand. The methods used to diagnose seem to be VERY basic and unscientific. Then drugs are given with a very “try this and see how you go” type approach.
As a mother, it terrifies me the amount of different drugs I’ve had to give to my children over the last 3 years, to find something that suits. (Use me as a test rat, but please - not my children.)
I’ve heard that in the US people can get brain scans or gene testing to get an insight into the type of adhd they have, which in turn gives a clearer picture of the type of medication needed.
As far as I know this kind of thing isn’t available in New Zealand. Should it be? Is it safe to keep feeding kids multiple types of drugs until you find one that suits?
Please reply. I feel so helpless. 😢

A heartfelt thank you to Professor Barkley for his invaluable contributions to the field of ADHD. His extensive body of work, including books and presentations, has been a treasure trove of knowledge not just for the scientific community but for clinicians like myself, who work tirelessly to support children with ADHD. Even in his retirement, he's continued to share his wisdom through updates on research and clinical practices.
Speaking as a paediatrician in South Africa, where there is a pressing need for expert guidance in managing ADHD in children, I can say that Professor Barkley's insights are incredibly appreciated. His updates are not only essential for healthcare professionals but are also incredibly beneficial for families, teachers, and a broad spectrum of people who interact with neurodiverse children. Here's to hoping he continues his generous sharing of knowledge for the greater good.
    Warm regards,
    John Flett

Your choice to continue teaching and educating about ADHD, even post-retirement, is truly commendable and emphasizes the passion and dedication you have for this significant work.

The seeds you are planting today will grow into strong trees, making a lasting impact for generations to come.
I genuinely hope that you remain well and continue to illuminate the path of ADHD knowledge and education for many years to come. May your continued journey be as rewarding and fulfilling as it has been so far, knowing the meaningful difference you are making in countless lives.

If you ever need anyone for any studies let me know lol I got a lot of theories of why people with ADHD can tolerate varying degrees of situations that the placebo effect would be effectively on without being there meaning there's something to do with us forgeting to pay any attention to that feeling or sensation long enough for healing to take place. Also about how people with ADHD are affected by psychedelics!

If ADHD isn't an actual disorder due to being a spectrum then nothing is an actual disorder. I saw a Psychiatrist once when insurance changed. This Dr asked me what I was there for, I stated ADHD & Anxiety. He asked how debilitating I felt my ADHD was, I said very, I can no longer work an am disabled. He replied no, because if you had ADHD that affects you that much you'd be running around my office touching all my stuff, to which I replied NO, because I am a 50 year old woman and am capable of remaining seated for extended periods of time. He disagreed I decided he was an ass and reported him for being uneducated, that wasn't the word but I can't recall it and he was uneducated imo.

I've gone through all three presentations.
I was diagnosed as a child with ADHD, dyslexia, and dysgraphia. dyslexia, and dysgraphia. I'm 28 now And I have seeked out to be tested for autism a couple of years ago, but couldn't find anyone to do so.
And last year I was seeking medication for my ADHD because I'm tired of struggling and want to do better for my daughter, but I just get the same self-management advice. (already do these things to the best of my ability) The system is so quick to give you meds for depression and anxiety (which I don't take anymore) but not to help with ADHD. My untreated ADHD could be a huge reason why I have anxiety and depression symptoms. I'm constantly overwhelmed.
Where do I go to talk to an expert in this field?
