    Whenever a doctor answers my page and sounds like I woke them up, I go out of my way to have a cup of coffee waiting for them. They don't always drink it, but it makes them smile most of the time.

Like keep your medications in order, eat more vegetables, don’t delay routine visits or procedures, or whatever you see a lot of that could maybe help people stay out of the hospital or at least have a better outcome.

      I have a super rare disease that only 10 people for every million have. I'm having my 8th brain surgery in 9 years coming up soon. It is understandable to be afraid, but don't be! Yes, some doctors, nurses, etc. just plain suck. They do. Same as any other profession, some people are in their line of work for the wrong reasons and it shows. However, MOST people in healthcare truly do want the best for you! Keep in mind that they are human and will have bad days. In the U.S. at least, nurses are way overworked and some doctors are too. That can create so much stress that they seem less than friendly when in reality, they care and are upset that they can't do their very best for every patient because they simply have too little time & not enough help. All of that said, in order to go through what they go through, including ungrateful & demanding patients, most of them really do care. I've been hospitalized dozens of times and have had hundreds of nurses & doctors in that time, so I've had a pretty good "survey" to base this on! Even with my disease being so rare & thus difficult to treat, most of those caring for me have tried their best to meet my needs. If you need healthcare then get it, don't put it off out of fear!

    • @petercdowney
      @petercdowney Před 5 lety +1

      I should probably let you know that Siobhan appears to have a tendency to put the stethoscope over the shirt. That's definitely something. As far as I'm aware, the best doctors always ensure it touches the skin!

      @michellebaker6302 Před 5 lety +3

      @@petercdowney 1) What does that have to do with the comment you're replying to? 2) I absolutely disagree. Sometimes they can't get a good listen through clothing but if they can, why risk spreading germs from patient to patient? I HATE when doctors put their stethoscope on my skin. They only do it if they have to because they know this. The doctors I've spoken with try to avoid it for exactly the reason I just said - the last thing you want is to listen to the heart & lungs of a sick patient and then put it on the body of a healthy one.

So if I page a doctor overheard with no response, I'll call his/her answering services. I love all of your videos, Dr. Siobhan. I have been binge watching them for days. The calls are great and they are the reason that I am finally getting out of my college dropout/depressive faze of my life. I started retaking my bipolar medicine again and have decided to go back to college after being out for a year and a half. I want to become a doctor because of your inspiration. Completely motivating me to become confident in myself and go for my dreams. Thank you so much! Keep up the amazing videos. They really are the highlight of my day.

    Hi Siobhan. It's my favorite part of the day. Have you ever declare someone dead, and after a while the impossible happened and they got a pulse? Like in the movie Breakthrough. I cried 😭 and it's based on a true story.

      We had a patient come into the ER who had fallen into the Ohio river in January. Witnesses said he was underwater for 20 minutes. Patient had no vitals when EMS found them. By time the patient got to ED he had been without a pulse or respirations for about 36 minutes. Because his body temperature was kept so low due to the ice cold water, our amazing physicians managed to resuscitate him... Two days later he started breathing on his own again and woke up. He had almost no lasting damage even though he was clinically dead for more than 30 minutes.

    Love this! Self care is so important. I recently graduated from nursing school at 39y/o, and will be starting a nurse residency in the ED in July. I did a career change after I became disenchanted with corporate America, and mundane desk jobs.

    P.S. Can we get a few more violin videos?

    Hey Siobhan, I'm currently a Pre-Vet student which is soooo similar to Med so when I first found you I really was intrigued to see all your videos and see how the medical field is like. While we have different patients, the issues with students and residents are so similar that your videos help me mentally prepare for what's coming up. I just want to say thank you for making such interesting videos and honestly helping me prepare. All your tips and advice I plan on using within my Veterinary path. :))

    Coincidentally, the bell sound heard at 0:52 can be heard in hospitals as the fire alarm system’s alarm signal, since hospitals don’t usually like loud buzzing/shrieking alarms that are heard in most other buildings.
